Seus olhos são como poços profundos de avelã derretida, girando com uma preocupação incessante. Ela se move para colocar o controle remoto no móvel de madeira de acácia. A cabeça é forrada com suportes de artigos laminados que escrevi. E as prateleiras guardam uma coleção de prêmios que ganhei ao longo dos anos. Não por minha escolha.

Minha boca se abre para retrucar. Mas então fecho os lábios, silenciada por uma fragrância que invade a sala de estar.

"É isso? Esse cheiro... é o que eu acho que estou cheirando?"

Inspiro profundamente, captando o aroma de queijo irresistível da lasanha da mamãe.

"Se você está cheirando a melhor lasanha caseira do mundo..." Calum entra na sala, apoiando o ombro no batente da porta. "Você está certa, princesa."

Minha mãe solta uma risada alta e aguda, batendo no ar. "Ah, para de brincar, menino."

"Estou falando sério." Ele se aproxima dela, envolvendo-a em um abraço de um lado só. "O que deveríamos estar fazendo é celebrando como essa comida é deliciosa. Até parei de tomar meus antidepressivos, porque agora só como sua lasanha."

Ela ri de novo, sua pele marrom outonal brilhando. Nem uma única ruga para revelar sua verdadeira idade.

Reviro os olhos para Calum. "Enquanto você flerta com minha mãe." Caminho até eles, meus saltos batendo no chão de vinil. "Vou me trocar."

Sua risada morre na boca. "É melhor, você está ridícula nesse terninho." Sua mão bate no braço de Calum. "Você sabe que ela entrou direto aqui, sem um oi—nada, foi direto para a TV, assistindo as últimas notícias sobre seu próximo alvo."

Calum joga a cabeça para trás com uma risada, exibindo um sorriso deslumbrante. Duas fileiras de dentes brancos brilhantes. "Deixa eu adivinhar... algo sobre a Zenith?"

Balanço a cabeça para os dois. "Fazendo complô contra mim no meu grande dia, isso é baixo," murmuro, subindo as escadas.

Entro no meu quarto, o segundo à esquerda, arrancando o elástico do cabelo—uma explosão de cachos até os ombros. Tiro os saltos, segurando-os pelas pontas dos dedos enquanto vou até a penteadeira. Largo os saltos. Meus olhos estão fixos na foto emoldurada de mim e meu pai quando eu era criança. Quando ele ainda estava vivo, e não apenas existindo. Mas vivo. Os anos foram duros para ele, sugando a vida de sua pele e a luta de seus ossos. Ele se colocou no túmulo tentando sustentar uma família quando nem podia sustentar a si mesmo. Ele se afogou só para nos manter à tona.

Agarro inconscientemente o crucifixo pendurado no meu pescoço. Deixo-o ir.

"Consegui mais uma, pai." Mal consigo me ouvir dizer. "Acho... acho que você teria orgulho."


Minha mãe, Calum e eu estamos sentados ao redor da mesa de jantar posta com uma cesta de pães, um prato de legumes e o convidado de honra. A lasanha. O prato está no centro, coberto com uma espessa camada de queijo gouda borbulhante, decorado com ervas verdes frescas. "Amém," ela diz. Ela solta nossas mãos, abrindo os olhos para me fitar. "Você tem sorte que hoje é seu dia." Ela lança um olhar para Calum. "E que temos companhia."

Um riso irônico escapa de mim. "Como se isso tivesse te parado no passado," murmuro.

"Menina, eu juro—"

"A lasanha está esfriando," Calum diz, tentando apaziguar. "Niente litigi a tavola. Vamos comer."

Todos nós começamos a comer. Eu coloco uma garfada na boca, gemendo a cada mordida. Lasanha ao estilo italiano. O equilíbrio entre as camadas de queijo e o molho bolonhesa caseiro é perfeito. Minhas papilas gustativas se deliciam com a linguiça fatiada e a carne moída, criando um sabor rico e complexo com o molho cremoso se espalhando pela minha língua.

Calum enxuga uma lágrima falsa do olho. "Eu deveria escrever essa receita nos livros de história, para que gerações após nós conheçam sua lenda."

Eu dou um sorriso para ele. As luzes acima iluminando seu cabelo dourado nórdico, estilizado com uma repartição ao meio. Muito parecido com um jovem Leonardo DiCaprio. Ele olha de volta para mim, hipnotizado por aquele azul celeste. Eu olho dentro deles, encantada pelo vasto reservatório de memórias felizes encapsuladas nas gemas oceânicas. Um remanescente vivo da minha infância, nossa história preservada naqueles olhos.

"Então, você vai me contar sobre os bandidos que você pegou?"

"Não eu—nós," eu corrijo. "Eu não conseguiria fazer o que faço sem o Cal, aqui." Eu franso o nariz para ele. "Não é verdade, nerd?"

"Verdade." Sua voz cheia de confiança. "Eu sou os olhos e ouvidos dela, seu Gandalf, que a leva a lugares onde a maioria das pessoas não consegue. Eu ajudo. Mas a determinação dela, suas conquistas." Ele me oferece um olhar longo e afetuoso. "Isso é tudo você, princesa."

"Eles tinham rifles AR-15, granadas e armamento de nível militar," eu acrescento. "O suficiente para começar uma guerra."

A expressão da minha mãe muda de fascinação para preocupação. Uma linha de preocupação se forma em sua testa. "Com sua condição, eu realmente odeio você sabendo esse tipo de coisa."

"Condição?" Calum ri. "É mais como um superpoder. É por isso que ela é boa no que faz."

Ela acena com a mão, desprezando. "Você sabe o que quero dizer. Porque depois ela nunca pode deixar de ver essas coisas. Mas chega disso." Ela aponta o garfo para mim, depois para Calum. "Quando vocês dois vão me dar uns netos lindos e misturados?"

Eu engasgo—Calum tosse em seu punho, batendo no peito.

Depois do jantar, Calum me ajuda com a louça. E depois eu o acompanho até a saída como de costume, caminhando até a entrada de minha casa com piso de travertino, ancorada por tábuas horizontais sob medida que amplificam o comprimento do ambiente.
