Introduction

È vero quello che si dice sul matrimonio: uno dei due partner è sempre più felice dell'altro.

~~~
Il mondo di Julie va in frantumi quando suo marito, Ryan, le rivela che vuole un matrimonio aperto. La sua motivazione: ha bisogno di un figlio, poiché non sono riusciti ad averne uno. Julie accetta con riluttanza per salvare il loro matrimonio.
Il giorno dopo, Ryan torna a casa con la sua segretaria, confermando il sospetto che Julie aveva da tempo: la loro relazione andava avanti alle sue spalle.
Julie, con il cuore spezzato e furiosa, cerca conforto in un bar, dove incontra uno sconosciuto affascinante di nome Luke, che cambia le carte in tavola. Julie si confida con Luke davanti a un drink, e lui le propone un piano rischioso: fingerà di essere il suo "fidanzato" per ribaltare la situazione con Ryan.
Julie accetta, dando inizio a una serie di eventi che metteranno in discussione tutto ciò che pensava di sapere sull'amore, la lealtà e se stessa.
Chapter 1
~~ Julie ~~
Mio marito, Ryan, è sul palco del karaoke e si sta rendendo davvero ridicolo. La camicia gli pende sbottonata a metà, la cravatta è sparita da un pezzo e le guance gli si sono tinte di rosso per il troppo whiskey.
"E io... ti amerò per sempre..." canta, con gli occhi chiusi.
Ha una voce da far accapponare la pelle.
Al suo fianco, praticamente appiccicata a lui, c'è la sua segretaria, Emily. Il suo braccio sinistro è intorno alla vita di Ryan, le dita che gli accarezzano la schiena mentre canta con lui. È almeno cinque anni più giovane di me, con occhi grandi e curve mozzafiato, avvolta in un vestito aderente e scollato che la rende impossibile da ignorare. Si china verso Ryan, gli sussurra qualcosa all'orecchio e lui scoppia a ridere, buttando la testa all'indietro. La guarda come se fosse la donna più spassosa dell'universo.
Non l'ho mai visto così felice, nemmeno lontanamente.
L'ultima volta che l'ho visto così raggiante era il giorno del nostro matrimonio, sette anni fa. Allora, i suoi occhi si illuminavano quando mi guardava. Ora quella luce si è spenta; brillano per qualcun'altra.
Tutti intorno a me ridono. È la festa aziendale di fine trimestre e i colleghi, ormai sciolti dopo qualche bicchiere di troppo, trovano la performance di Ryan ed Emily semplicemente esilarante. Ma so bene di cosa ridono davvero: ridono di me. La moglie del CEO, seduta qui mentre il marito si lascia andare con la segretaria davanti a tutti. Sussurri, occhiatine di traverso… nemmeno si sforzano di nasconderlo.
"Secondo te, si baciano?" bisbiglia qualcuno alle mie spalle.
"Sicuro. Scommetto che dopo faranno ben più che baciarsi," ribatte l'altro, scoppiando a ridere insieme.
Mi volto verso chi ha parlato: giovani, ubriachi, forse anche fatti di erba. Saranno sicuramente stagisti. Solo chi non ha idea di come funziona qui dentro oserebbe parlare così davanti alla moglie del capo.
O forse, semplicemente, non gliene può fregare di meno.
La ragazza, con i capelli biondi arruffati e le guance arrossate, incrocia il mio sguardo. "Ciao!" esclama, un po' troppo forte. "Tu lavori qui?"
Lavoro qui? Socchiudo gli occhi: è sicuramente una stagista.
È carina, ma di quella bellezza acerba che porta con sé la spavalderia della giovinezza. Il ragazzo accanto le appoggia il braccio sulle spalle con aria svogliata.
Non rispondo. Li fisso, fredda e imperturbabile.
Prima che possa dire qualcosa che li faccia pentire di essere nati, sento il mio nome pronunciato.
"Julie!" chiama una voce, attirando la mia attenzione.
So già chi è, ancora prima di voltarmi: Samantha, la vicepresidente marketing. Lavoriamo entrambe alla Paragon Jewels, l'azienda di Ryan, il più grande produttore di gioielli di lusso in Nord America. È appena sotto di me nella gerarchia, quindi è una delle poche che si permette di chiamarmi per nome, come se fossimo amiche, anche se non lo siamo affatto.
"Samantha," replico, forzando un sorriso di circostanza.
"Non sapevo fossi qui, Julie. Proprio poco fa dicevo al team marketing che dobbiamo coinvolgerti di più!"
"Oh?" dico. "Perché?"
"Beh, sei la responsabile marketing, tutti vorrebbero conoscerti! Sei diventata introvabile, ultimamente. E poi, non c'è mai modo di fare due chiacchiere in ufficio," aggiunge, strizzando l'occhio in modo esagerato.
Il suo sguardo scivola sul palco, dove Ryan ed Emily ondeggiano insieme, condividendo il microfono e ridendo come se fossero a un appuntamento galante, non a un evento aziendale.
"Allora, signora O'Brien," sogghigna, "come ti sembra lo spettacolo finora?"
Mi sta prendendo in giro. Che stronza.
Sfoggio un sorriso smagliante. "Oh, è… fantastico," rispondo, cercando di restare seria. "Sono davvero entusiasta di vedere che il duro lavoro di mio marito viene ricompensato con tanta… dedizione da parte del suo staff."
La folla ora applaude, regalando a Ryan e alla sua segretaria una standing ovation. Immagino abbiano finito con le loro buffonate.
Ma poi Ryan prende il microfono: "Prima di scendere, abbiamo un'altra canzone per voi!"
Ancora applausi. Ancora risate. E io vorrei solo sprofondare sotto terra.
Samantha mi lancia uno sguardo pieno di pietà. "Beh... ehm," mormora. "Ci vediamo dopo."
Si allontana in fretta.
Dietro di me, sento quei tirocinanti bisbigliare di nuovo: "Oddio, hai sentito cosa ha detto? Quella è la signora O'Brien."
Mi giro e li fulmino con un ultimo sguardo; il ragazzo si agita, prende la ragazza per mano e si alzano insieme. "Andiamo," sussurra piano, e si allontanano traballando, gettandomi un'occhiata di sfuggita prima di perdersi tra la gente.
Bene. Che scappino.
Mi rigiro verso il palco, col cuore che mi martella nel petto. Ryan sta cantando "Everything I Do"—se si può chiamare cantare. Emily ormai gli si è incollata addosso, la mano che gli scivola lungo il braccio in un modo che mi fa venire la nausea. Lei non ha un briciolo di pudore, e lui è troppo sbronzo per rendersene conto—o peggio, non gliene importa nulla.
Non ce la faccio più.
Senza riflettere, spingo indietro la sedia e mi alzo. I miei tacchi risuonano sul pavimento mentre mi avvicino al palco. Sento gli sguardi di tutti addosso, i bisbigli che si smorzano mentre capiscono cosa sta succedendo. Era questo che aspettavano—volevano vedere se cedessi.
Ma non me ne importa più. Ho chiuso con la recita della moglie perfetta.
Salgo le scale del palco, ogni passo più pesante del precedente. Ryan non si accorge subito di me, troppo preso dalla sua performance sbronza, ma Emily mi vede e il suo sorriso si spegne. Meglio così.
"Ryan," dico. "Andiamo via. Ora."
Ryan mi guarda stupito. "Perché?" farfuglia, ancora col microfono in mano. "La festa è appena cominciata."
Stringo i denti e i pugni. "Andiamo. Adesso."
"Julie, basta," sbuffa, visibilmente infastidito, come se fossi io quella che gli rovina la serata.
Non riesco a trattenermi. Qualcosa dentro di me si rompe.
Senza aggiungere altro, mi volto e mi avvio verso il fondo del palco. I tecnici nella cabina mi fissano mentre mi avvicino, e i loro volti impallidiscono.
"Chi comanda qui?" domando.
Tutti puntano il dito verso un uomo vicino al mixer, con una ciambella a metà in mano. Gli occhi gli si spalancano quando mi vede.
"Signora O'Brien," balbetta, lasciando subito la ciambella. "C'è qualcosa... ehm... che posso fare per lei?"
"Spegni tutto," ordino. "La festa è chiusa."
Lui sbarra gli occhi, incerto se faccio sul serio, ma basta uno sguardo al mio viso e si precipita a obbedire. Le sue mani corrono sui comandi e in pochi istanti gli altoparlanti si zittiscono con uno stridio. Le luci si abbassano. La musica si interrompe. Il silenzio cala sulla sala come una coperta pesante, e l'unico rumore rimasto è quello dei miei tacchi mentre ritorno al centro del palco.
Ryan è fermo lì, microfono ormai inutile tra le mani.
"Julie, ma che cavolo fai?" sbotta Ryan.
Lo fisso negli occhi, sentendo il peso di tutto ciò che ho tenuto dentro per troppo tempo. "Ti sei divertito," sussurro, ma con una fermezza che gli impedisce di replicare. "Ora basta."
Non gli lascio il tempo di rispondere. Gli afferro il braccio e lo trascino giù dalle scale.
Ryan vacilla, sorpreso dalla mia determinazione improvvisa. I suoi occhi vagano sulla folla, alla ricerca di sostegno, di approvazione, ma trova solo occhi sgranati e bisbigli sommessi. Sono tutti troppo scioccati, troppo presi dal dramma per schierarsi con lui.
I bisbigli si accendono subito. Colgo frammenti di chiacchiere mentre passiamo. Che dicano quello che vogliono. Che ridano pure.
Ryan è troppo sbronzo per opporsi, troppo mortificato per protestare. Per una volta, è lui a tacere, e io a comandare.
Justin, la guardia del corpo e autista di Ryan, ci nota arrivare e si mette subito all'opera. Si avvicina e, senza proferire parola, apre la portiera posteriore dell'auto.
Ryan mormora qualcosa a bassa voce—una scusa, forse, o una giustificazione—ma io tiro dritto. Non lo guardo nemmeno. Lo afferro con decisione e lo spingo sul sedile posteriore, dove si lascia cadere senza opporre resistenza.
"Portaci a casa," ordino, salendo in macchina dietro Ryan e chiudendo la portiera con un colpo secco.
He dragged his hands down his face. "Tell me what's on your mind."
One Night. One Mistake. One Lifetime of Consequences.
I thought I was waiting for love. Instead, I got fucked by a beast.
My world was supposed to bloom at the Moonshade Bay Full Moon Festival—champagne buzzing in my veins, a hotel room booked for Jason and me to finally cross that line after two years. I’d slipped into lacy lingerie, left the door unlocked, and lay on the bed, heart pounding with nervous excitement.
But the man who climbed into my bed wasn’t Jason.
In the pitch-black room, drowned in a heady, spicy scent that made my head spin, I felt hands—urgent, scorching—searing my skin. His thick, pulsing cock pressed against my dripping cunt, and before I could gasp, he thrust hard, tearing through my innocence with ruthless force. Pain burned, my walls clenching as I clawed at his iron shoulders, stifling sobs. Wet, slick sounds echoed with every brutal stroke, his body unrelenting until he shuddered, spilling hot and deep inside me.
"That was amazing, Jason," I managed to say.
"Who the fuck is Jason?"
My blood turned to ice. Light slashed across his face—Brad Rayne, Alpha of Moonshade Pack, a werewolf, not my boyfriend. Horror choked me as I realized what I’d done.
I ran away for my life!
But weeks later, I woke up pregnant with his heir!
They say my heterochromatic eyes mark me as a rare true mate. But I’m no wolf. I’m just Elle, a nobody from the human district, now trapped in Brad's world.
Brad’s cold gaze pins me: “You carry my blood. You’re mine.”
There is no other choice for me but to chose this cage. My body also betrays me, craving the beast who ruined me.
