Bea held the bundle of roses up to the light, focusing on the red petals. It was early morning, meaning she would have plenty of time to change out the discarded flowers, before having to show up for duty in the kitchens. She brought the bundle to her nose and inhaled. The blend of leaf and petal invigorated her. Any joy she could find made her meager life as a slave that much brighter. So, she looked for joy in everything.

Chapter 3 A Chilly Trip

The carriage shook violently as it dipped into a deep rut in the road. The motion shoved Bea sideways and then quickly back the other way. She grabbed the side of the door to keep from knocking further into the side wall. Savonnuh sat silently, staring blindly out the window. Bea doubted that she saw the things her eyes touched. She’d been like a mobile dead person while they’d packed.

Chapter 4 More than a Beast?

The hallway seemed smaller and eerie without Savonnuh in it. Bea looked up one more time at her door before turning and walking back down to the tables on the bottom floor. She timidly made her way through all the tables and people crowding in on each other. Were there this many people here when she went upstairs with Savonnuh? She couldn’t remember there being this many.

Chapter 5 The Baby Blue Dress

The guards immediately moved into action by pulling Bea into the room and slamming the door closed. She tried to run to her Master when the door had opened but she couldn’t move her limbs. She tried to reach for Savonnuh’s hand as it lay against her baby blue dress, but she couldn’t. Nothing would respond to her demands. She could only stand and stare as the guards moved around the room.

Chapter 8 Bath Time with Bea

Bea lifted the comforter to move Dax’s legs to a more comfortable position when the foul smell that had been lingering in the room, blasted her in the face. She wasn’t sure if it was her imagination or reality but the area felt hotter and tasted sticky. The different blends of musk created a smell she’d never experienced before.
