I looked at the document. Just a couple of initials and my signature, and this phase of my life would be over. A sob escaped me, and I took a deep breath. Maybe I had really failed as a wife, and God only knows how many times Simon had thrown it in my face.

Chapter 2

Looking for a space for my bakery turned out to be a longer task than expected. I wanted to find the right place. I had a limited budget, so it couldn't be too big or in an expensive neighborhood. It had to be in a lively area where people would walk by and stop, and most importantly, I had to feel at home. Wictor acted as my driver, and we spent almost the entire day visiting places. None of them seemed right.

Hunter Gardner, I answered. Hunter, how are things? asked my old navy friend. After leaving the corps, he joined the police while I chose to work in the private sector. We kept in touch and helped each other when necessary. Danny, I'm fine. You know, getting old sucks, I told him. What brings this call? He chuckled but got serious as I asked the question. It's never a good sign, I thought to myself. I'm calling as a courtesy, just to give you a heads-up, Danny said. Thanks, what's it about? Simon. My stomach tightened. What trouble has my son gotten into this time? It's not good, it's big and it's bad, Danny added.

Chapter 4

How was it possible that the charming gray-haired guy I almost ran into this afternoon was now at my door claiming to be my ex's father? For a moment, I thought someone had cursed my door, as it seemed to attract only strange types. Even though I never gave much thought to such things, an evening like this was really making me reconsider.

I gently guided Hana to the kitchen and turned on the faucet. I had her stand in front of the sink, positioned myself behind her, and held her hand under the running water. She didn't resemble at all what I had always imagined my son's wife to be. I would have expected someone more like his mother. But Hana was a whole different story.
