Chapter 14 One Slap Is Not Enough

All the blood drained from Sam's face; even his voice was trembling. "Son, no, Mr. Griffiths! This is but a misunderstanding..."

He was fumbling for an excuse but failed to find a good one. He was so anxious that he was sweating.

It was then that Camila broke the silence. "Jayden, this is indeed a misunderstanding. Mom and Dad feel emotional whenever they are reminded that Mabel is no longer staying with us, so they tried to keep everything just like before."

To which Mabel suddenly laughed.

What was Camila doing, not enrolling in an acting school? What a waste, she thought sarcastically.

Any man would become softhearted at her tears.

Unfortunately, it was to Jayden Griffiths whom she was telling her tearjerker.

"And now I'm starting to think that one slap is not enough for you," Jayden said coldly.

Camila trembled as she bit her lip. Victoria stood in front of her.

"Mr. Griffiths, please have some tea first. There's nothing a cup of tea can't solve." She smiled ingratiatingly and personally served him tea.

Sam also stepped forward to smooth things over. "Why don't you stay for lunch? I'll get the kitchen to have lunch going for us."

"No, thanks." Jayden didn't intend to give them face. "I'm here to ask you: five years ago, did you commit my current wife to a psychiatric hospital against her will on the basis of her messy private life?"

Mabel was stunned.

She didn't know she was a part of the cast.

Sam's heart tightened. The word "my wife" made him feel a chill down his spine.

His past mistake had now come to bite him in the a*s.

However, at this moment, Camila suddenly had a thought.

If she were to assert that Camila had plotted this marriage behind their backs, would she be able to marry him again, as she should have?

Camila felt her hope rekindled again, but she didn't dare to speak. She quickly winked at Victoria.

Victoria could tell what she was thinking at a glance. But given the current situation, wouldn't it add fuel to the fire if they arranged for another "correction" marriage?

The first course of action was to calm Jayden down.

"Mr. Griffiths, those are simply rumors. Nothing can be further from the truth," Victoria said with a smile. "Growing up, Mabel has always been a good child. She has never dated anyone, let alone slept around. Someone must have been jealous of Mabel and deliberately spread those rumors."

Jayden narrowed his eyes, his voice flat. "Is that so?"

Judging from his tone, it was obvious that he did not believe it.

Sam suddenly had a headache.

If Jayden found out about what had happened back then, not only would he call off the engagement, he would also vent their anger on the entire Baldwin family!

At this point, he could only focus on damage control.

"Of course! They're all rumors spread to ruin my daughter's reputation! Don't I know my daughter well enough? She is a pure and innocent good girl!"

Jayden's lips curved into a cold smile. His slender fingers tapped lightly on his thigh. "So, the way I understand this is that you committed her to a psychiatric hospital on purpose back then."

His tone was obviously casual, but the coldness in his eyes made people's hair stand on end.

Sam and Victoria looked at each other. Their faces turned pale, and they were at a loss of words.

They were unable to answer his question.

No matter how they answered, they would end up being charged with forcibly committing their daughter to a mental hospital without a sound reason for doing so.

Victoria's eyes flickered, and she was suddenly shocked. Then she said, "This, too, is a misunderstanding. Mabel was hospitalized for her own good. She's had serious insomnia before, and there was a very famous doctor in the hospital who could cure her insomnia."

Jayden turned to look at Mabel and sought confirmation. "Is that true?"

Mabel couldn't guess what he was planning, but she knew that she couldn't let him find out about the incident five years ago.

She had to protect herself.

"It's true," Mabel replied calmly.

Hearing her reply, Victoria and Sam immediately breathed a sigh of relief.

Jayden arched his eyebrows slightly. "Is your insomnia cured now?"

"Yeah." Mabel nodded gently.

Seeing that she was calm and unruffled, he did not pursue the matter further.

However, when he looked into her charming fox-like eyes, he would always inadvertently think of her ruthlessness and calmness when she faced the snow wolf.

Having passed the first round of interrogation, the Baldwin couple heaved a sigh of relief in unison.

"Mr. Griffiths, come and have some tea!" At this moment, they didn't even dare to be on a first name basis with him.

Staring at the steaming cup of tea, Jayden did not take it.

Victoria could only put down her teacup awkwardly.

Mabel found an opportunity and finally said, "Mom, I have something to tell you."

Victoria smiled awkwardly. "Okay."

When they entered the room, Victoria's face immediately changed.

"What's going on? Jayden Griffiths is obviously a normal person! Why didn't you call us yesterday? Are you trying to steal your sister's marriage partner? You even brought him here to question us. Mabel, what are you up to?"

Mabel looked at her coldly and pressed her fingers impatiently. "Don't change the topic. I'm looking for you because I have a question for you. I kept the thumb ring in a bank safe. Why did you take it away? It's mine. Give it back to me!"

Victoria's face darkened. "What do you want that for? You took your sister's shares. What's wrong with me taking away your thumb ring?"

Mabel sneered. "Those were originally my shares. It was you and her who worked together and transferred it under her name. I'm only taking back what belongs to me. Now, cut the crap and give me back my thumb ring!"

If Victoria didn't treat her as her daughter, then she need not treat her as her mother.

She didn't want such a cold-blooded and heartless family!

Victoria felt a little guilty under her gaze. She grouched, "Jesus, it's just a cheap ring. I gave it to your sister!"
