Chapter 12 The Ferocity of a Wolf
"It's all right." Jayden lowered his eyes. His crow-feather-like eyelashes hid the emotions in his eyes.
Assuming Jayden was going to do it himself, Steven nodded and left.
Reaching his bedroom, Jayden stared at the walnut door and was lost in thought.
Mabel had the ferocity of a wolf, and the double-edged silver needles in her hands could both save and hurt someone.
First, she'd saved his grandmother, and then she'd taken her sister's place as the bride. These were all too coincidental to ignore.
He narrowed his eyes and hid the emotions in them. He pushed the door open and entered.
The light was not on in the room. The only source of light filtered in from outside the window and lit up the sofa under the window.
The girl was wrapped in a bathrobe, curled up and lying on the sofa.
It was a posture that screamed insecure.
She lay on her side, with her face on her hand. She was quiet and beautiful, like a little goblin who had accidentally entered the human world.
He stood where he was and looked at Mabel quietly. An obscure light flashed through his eyes.
He thought of his grandmother's words, hesitated for a moment, and turned to go out.
Mabel had had a good sleep on the sofa. She woke up the next day.
The two-person bed in the master bedroom didn't look like it had been slept in.
It seemed that Jayden had not returned to his room last night.
Not that she cared. She freshened up and was ready to go out, but at the corner of the corridor she bumped into him.
He was wearing a white silk shirt. The buttons of his collar were open, revealing a small part of his sexy collarbone. His Adam's apple was prominent, and was particularly attractive.
He was twice her height, and she had to raise her chin to see his face.
Annoyed, she took two steps back.
"You came at an opportune time. I need to make a trip home," she said calmly.
Jayden lowered his eyes and glanced at her pretty, porcelain-white face. "I'll come with you."
That kind of surprised her.
Why would he want to go with her? She was just a stand-in bride who he scorned, she thought.
"Actually, I can go by myself." She subtly refused.
Jayden snorted coldly. "If it wasn't for Grandma's request, do you think I would even suggest this?"
Translation: Oh, come on, Mabel Baldwin. Save your wishful thinking.
Mabel smiled awkwardly. "Okay, you can come with me."
The two of them went downstairs one after another. Mr. Fletcher told them that Madam Griffiths had gone to the hospital for her checkup and that Melanie went with her.
Jayden nodded and left with Mabel in a car, heading for the Baldwin family.
In the car.
He sat elegantly in the back seat, with his hands crossed on his thighs. He rubbed the jade thumb ring on his left thumb, closed his eyes, and rested.
Mabel glanced at him from the corner of her eye. Her gaze paused on his jade thumb ring for a second.
This jade thumb ring was a top-grade imperial green. It was very rare.
The thumb ring that the man had given her five years ago was also made of the same type of jade, which was priceless.
She had kept the thumb ring in the safe of a bank five years ago, but yesterday her assistant had told that it had been taken away by Victoria!
The reason she returned to the Baldwin family was to get her ring.
This thumb ring was of great significance to her, and she must get it back at all cost!
Half an hour later, the Lincoln stopped at the gate to the Baldwin family's villa.
Mabel and Jayden got out of the car one after another.
The butler was appalled to see this. He hurried forward to greet her. "Miss Mabel, you're here? Is this... the husband I've been hearing so much about?"
"He doesn't look anything like the rumors" was what he kept to himself.
Wasn't Jayden of the Griffiths family an ugly and disabled man who didn't have long to live?
But this man had an elegant temperament and a handsome face. It was obvious that he was an aristocrat. The butler saw nothing remotely resembling "ugly" on him.
Mabel glanced at him indifferently and said, "Go back to your work."
The butler nodded and left.
Jayden scanned the Baldwin family's villa.
There was nothing in this house that indicated warmth and joy. His already cold pupils gave people a sense of oppression.
The servants hid in the distance and watched.
No one dared to believe that this handsome and elegant man was the Jayden Griffiths they had heard nothing good about!
Mabel ignored the astonished looks in their eyes and led him through the garden in the front yard and entered the villa.
As soon as she entered the villa, she heard Victoria's sarcastic and shrill voice: "That little b*tch finally got married! I can have my moment of peace from now on!"
"Mom," Camila said in a sweet voice, "It hasn't been easy on her either."
Victoria grunted. "In what way?"
Victoria growled, "She accused you as soon as she came back yesterday and slapped you in the face. You are too soft-hearted for your own good. Why in the world are you still speaking up for her? I said what I said last night: she's no longer my daughter, and she's no longer your sister!"
Sam sighed. "Now we can only pray that the Griffiths family will not find out about her dirty past. Her indiscretion is going to reflect poorly on us."
