Chapter 11 Do You Need Me to Step In
"Not too bad." Mabel lounged on the sofa, her legs crossed. "But it would have been perfect without all that yada yada yada."
Holding a cigarette between his fingers, Perkin Spencer slowly took a drag and puffed it out. He said lightly, "Do you need me to step in?"
"Nah, I'm good." Mabel raised an eyebrow, "But tell me, Mr. Worldwide, to what do I owe the honor?"
Perkin flicked his cigarette, and said in his charming voice, "Someone is investigating you. Or should I say, the incident five years ago."
Mabel's eyes bespoke her fearlessness. "I wouldn't worry about it. They won't find anything."
Perkin narrowed his eyes. "What exactly is going on? Do you want me to settle it for you?"
"Nothing." Mabel looked up at him. "By the way, have you found the owner of the thumb ring?"
He put out the cigarette, his face uncharacteristically grim. "I wish I could tell you I have, but no."
He had hired people to investigate a long time ago, but there was no clue.
Mabel pursed her lips. "That's okay. Keep investigating."
Perkin hummed, then rose to his feet. "Let's end the call here. I have a date, and we don't want her to wait for too long, do we."
After that, he hung up.
Mabel put down her phone and looked at her pale fingertips with a serious face.
"Why couldn't I find any trace of what happened five years ago?"
Who exactly was that man?
After packing her belongings, Mabel followed Mr. Fletcher to the master bedroom.
The interior of the large master bedroom was minimalistic. The blue-and-white color combination was clean and refreshing, but it inexplicably gave of a cold feeling, just like that of its owner.
Mabel looked around the room briefly and then went to the washroom with her toiletries.
She looked at the girl in the mirror and frowned slightly.
She had an extremely beautiful face and a pair of charming fox-like eyes. Even without a smile, she could snare people's souls.
In silence, the coldness in her eyes imbued her with an unapproachable air.
Mabel had grown up in the mountains, as her parents had sent her to the countryside when she was still young.
Only when she reached eighteen years of age did they bring her back.
Not long after she rejoined the family, she was framed by her sister, Camila, and her reputation had since been ruined.
After that, her biological mother had sent her to a psychiatric hospital.
In fact, Mabel was fully capable of leaving the hospital, but she chose not to.
From the get-go, she had been waiting for an apology from her relatives, but five years had worn by and she had never gotten one.
What she had got was instead a forced marriage and the role of Camila's stand-in.
Since they were the ones who had started this, she was more than happy to consider them dead to her.
......
When Jayden returned to the Orchid Court that night, Mr. Fletcher immediately told him what had happened this afternoon.
Suffice to say, he was none too thrilled to hear that. He went to Madam Griffiths's room.
In the room, Melanie was giving Madam Griffiths her medicine. Her eyes lit up when she saw him come in. "Jayden!"
Jayden didn't even spare her a glance. "Can you give us some privacy?"
Melanie's face turned pale. She put down the bowl and left.
Madam Griffiths seemed to have sensed his intentions. She calmly picked up a date and put it into her mouth.
"Why, are you here to ask me for forgiveness?"
Jayden pursed his thin lips. "Said the person who claimed that Mabel Baldwin was a jinx."
"God forbid!" she spat. "That fortune-teller is a charlatan! I already found another fortune-teller. You and Mabel are a match made in heaven! She will only bring luck to you. She even saved my life today. If you marry her, not only will you live a long life, but you will also be blessed with a big family! If there is a couple destined by the stars, it's you and Mabel!"
Jayden frowned. "She's the savior you've been talking about, Grandma?"
Wasn't it too coincidental?
Was it a coincidence or a deliberate act?
"Amen to that!" Madam Griffiths bobbed her head vigorously. "The fortune teller also said that you and Mabel are a compatible match!"
Jayden rubbed his forehead helplessly. "I guess you are the fortune-teller, huh, Grandma?"
With her story exposed, she immediately acted dumb. "Ouch, my back, oof, I have never felt this sore. Jayden, hurry up and leave. Your grandma really needs to rest."
He shook his head and left.
As soon as he went out, Steven came up to him and said, "Sir, Miss Baldwin is in your room now. Do you need me to move her to another room?"
