Chapter 6 CHAPTER
CHAPTER 006
Lachlan inquired as he drove, suggesting a location to celebrate my newfound freedom. Lachlan maintained his focus on driving while he asked the question.
I paused to think before making my choice.
“Take me back to my hotel. I need to collect my belongings before leaving.
Lachlan glanced at me, surprised.
The question was, "When did you depart from your residence?"
“Yesterday. The conversation ended abruptly. The house no longer felt like home, so leaving today would have been more difficult than yesterday. I paused before telling him, "I need to visit
Mrs. Sinclair one last time."
The idea made my heart constrict. Mrs. Agnes Sinclair was a housekeeper, but she meant much more to me. Over the last three years, Mrs. Sinclair had become my foundation in that frigid house.
I had requested that she accompany me when I left. She refused.
I told him that Mrs. Sinclair had stayed with Callum since his childhood days. “She practically raised him. The thought of leaving him behind made me unable to take Mrs. Sinclair away from her position.
Lachlan nodded. You had a deep affection for her.
She stands out as one of the few individuals who never made me feel like an outsider in his life. I’ll miss her.” I sighed. Callum's mother always disapproved of me while his father remained absent from his life.
Lachlan mocked her with the statement, "That woman always thought you were after his money."
The absurd nature of the situation prompted us both to break into laughter.
He paused before continuing with, "They should understand the real situation."
I shook my head. “It doesn’t matter anymore.”
Lachlan didn’t argue.
Kirsty and Lachlan were the only two people who understood my efforts to build connections between my family and Callum's family. It had been useless. His mother openly displayed her dislike toward me regardless of my actions.
Lachlan told me that my main concern should be myself. “And now, the baby.”
Lachlan killed the engine and got out of the car at exactly the same moment I did when we reached the hotel.
He offered to carry my bags before I could express any objection. “You’re pregnant. No heavy lifting.”
I dismissed his comment without any response.
The concierge presented my final bill to me before we proceeded to the upper floors.
“Royal Suite?” Lachlan read the plaque outside my door before emitting a long, low sound. “Not bad. It has reached the point where you deserve to pamper yourself.
I showed him the key card after admitting I needed time to rest.
Lachlan entered behind me to examine the suite with admiration.
He commented that the suite seemed fit for royal occupants. Callum must now wish he had not given up this royal suite.
I paid no attention to his remark while I collected my luggage.
He looked surprised when he asked, "This is everything?"
I only brought few items when I joined his household.
You left behind all the items Callum purchased for you. Callum’s never been cheap.”
“I left them.”
Lachlan raised a brow.
I explained to him that I needed peace of mind. I am only bringing the baby from that house because it grows inside my womb.
Lachlan grinned. “That’s cold. I love it.”
The door opened as I laughed with Lachlan but I stopped immediately.
Callum's expression resembled frozen ice as he stood there. His eyes moved briefly toward Lachlan before returning to me.
He spoke with a low voice as he observed me.
I frowned. “What are you doing here?”
He let out a dry laugh. You would believe me if I told you I came to give you this. He held up a brown folder.
The sight of it made my stomach twist.
You have heard me say it before : I do not want your money.
“So you say,” he drawled. Your new relationship makes my financial support unnecessary, according to you.
I glanced at Lachlan, confused.
“Don’t tell me you’re jealous?” I asked.
Callum let out a sharp laugh. “Jealous? Don’t be ridiculous.” His face hardened. A quick wave of guilt passed through me before I realized it was pointless. You moved on fast.”
I forced myself to look at him directly after his hurtful words hit me.
“You wanted this divorce, remember?” I reminded him.
“Of course. I could never love you.”
“Because you always loved someone else.”
He nodded.
He looked back at me before entering the hallway while his eyes remained expressionless.
He declared, "I hate you because you turned me into a laughingstock." The decision to divorce you stands as my greatest achievement in life.
Then he walked away.
