Chapter 6 Not Following the Rules

Emily looked more stunning with each passing moment! Her beauty seemed to transcend the ordinary.

It was like Snow White had stepped right out of a storybook.

Alice could hardly imagine how breathtaking Emily would be if she ditched those ugly pants and hideous shoes, put on some makeup, and styled her hair.

Damn it!

How could a woman like her show up at the Smith Group?

"Didn't you hear me? I told you to get out of the Smith Group!"

Alice crumpled Emily's job application into a ball and threw it on the floor.

"Okay."

Emily picked up the crumpled paper, then turned and entered the CEO's private elevator.

"Hey! I told you to leave, not to use that elevator! Are you crazy? What the hell do you think you are doing?"

Alice watched the elevator doors close slowly, hoping to see Emily trapped inside.

"Look! The elevator! It's moving!!!"

"Impossible! That elevator is for the CEO only! No one but Tyler and Louis can use it!"

Alice stared in disbelief as the elevator numbers climbed from 18 upwards.

"No way! Absolutely not!"

Alice frantically pressed the elevator buttons.

Louis walked over and pushed Alice's hand away.

"Calm down! This is the CEO's elevator! What are you trying to do?"

"Mr. Cox! Stop that woman! She actually used the CEO's elevator!"

"Alice, shut up! Everyone's watching you. Are you sure you want to keep acting crazy?"

Louis yanked Alice to the side.

"I just got word from Tyler. That girl, Emily, Mr. Smith personally appointed her as his personal assistant!"

"No way! She skipped work! She seriously violated company policy! How can we keep someone like that?"

"Are you the boss, or is Mr. Smith the boss? Do you dare to say no to Mr. Smith?"

"I suggest you stop this madness! Even if you're the HR manager, if Mr. Smith doesn't like you, you'll be out of the Smith Group in no time."

Louis spoke harshly.

Then he tapped his chest.

He was fed up with this clueless woman.

If it weren't for the bribe he took from Alice's father, he wouldn't have bothered to look out for Alice.

Alice was a fool!

Her outburst today was likely due to her patience running out.

After all, she'd been at the Smith Group for a whole year without seeing James.

Finally, when James returned, she was challenged by an intern.

If she knew that Emily not only became James's personal assistant but also had her desk on the 88th floor, would she die of anger?

Louis pulled out his phone and refunded a large sum of money.

Some money was too dangerous to keep.

He didn't want to risk angering James.

Losing his job was one thing, but being blacklisted in the industry could force him out of Emerald City.

He had a feeling Alice was bound to cause trouble...

Alice watched Louis leave, then turned to glare at the elevator.

Sure enough, the elevator stopped on the 88th floor.

Alice clenched her fists, her freshly manicured nails digging into her palms, leaving deep marks, but she didn't feel a thing.

Seeing people whispering and pointing, Alice considered climbing the stairs to the CEO's office, but then her phone's office system sent a message.

"All A6-level management, please report to the conference room on the 87th floor for a meeting!"

Alice's heart leaped with joy.

This was her chance!

She had to see James and tell him that the new intern was a rule-breaking slacker!

She knew James hated rule-breakers!

In Emerald City, James's name was synonymous with rules!

James sat in his massive executive chair, surrounded by a stack of documents and with no cup on his desk.

Tyler held a tablet, uploading the necessary meeting materials into the office system.

The large conference room was filled with chairs.

After handing her application to Tyler, Emily hung the badge he gave her around her neck.

She didn't ask any questions but observed the conference room setup and the materials Tyler placed, estimating the meeting would last at least two hours.

Then Emily turned and opened James's office.

She saw a cup on the desk, and next to it were two bags of red tea...

With three minutes left before the meeting started, Emily placed the freshly brewed tea near James's hand, within easy reach but not in the way of his documents.

Then she poured two cups of coffee for herself and Tyler, placing them on a high cabinet by the door.

"Bitch!"

Alice entered the conference room with a stack of documents and immediately insulted Emily.

Emily bit her lip, holding back her retort.

This was the conference room.

Soon, the Smith Group's mid-to-senior management would arrive. If they saw two women fighting here, they'd both be fired, and it might even make the business news.

Too embarrassing.

"Ms. Baker, I'm now Mr. Smith's personal assistant. Please show some respect!"

Emily said calmly.

"Respect you? Bitch! Don't think that I don't know what dirty tricks you used to get this job! I'll make sure you never get close to Mr. Smith as long as I'm here!"

Alice stomped her foot in anger. With others entering, she couldn't continue her tirade and had to take her seat.

Since James hadn't been back to the Smith Group for a year, he used the reports to catch up on the company's operations.

He also wanted to send a message that even though he spent a year in Lumaria, he was still well-informed about the Smith Group's affairs.

When it was Alice's turn to report on HR recruitment, she glanced at Emily, and Emily instantly sensed Alice's malicious intent.

"Mr. Smith, I know you're very strict about talent selection. What about employees who fail to follow company assignments, leave their posts without permission, and speak back to their superiors? Isn't that against the rules?"

James propped his eyebrow with a pen, glancing at Louis.

As an A6 employee, Alice had an A7 HR manager, an A8 HR director, an A9 group VP, and finally James above her.

She could report her work but not directly address James.

Louis was the special assistant James appointed for Eric when he left Emerald City, and he managed all non-operational tasks.

Alice's insinuation was clearly personal, not professional.

James was sharp enough to see through her ploy.

Louis broke into a cold sweat.
