Eve
The cab pulled over in front of our house, and I thanked the stars. All through the drive, the driver kept glancing at me through the rearview mirror like I was some mad girl who had just escaped from the psychiatric ward.
I don't blame him anyway. I would probably be acting the same way, too, if I picked up a shoeless lady in my car.
I wouldn't even pick her up in the first place.
“Thanks,” I muttered in slight embarrassment, handing him some dollar bills, which he took with the utmost care.
I opened the door and alighted from the car.
I was feeling pretty burned out, and all I needed right now was to go to my room and throw myself on my bed, which would most certainly welcome me with open arms.
I walked up the porch and opened the door, but came to an abrupt halt at the sight.
Great!
This annoying dumbass!
“What are you doing?” I asked, folding my arms across my chest and glaring at him… the three of them actually.
They instantly turned around, and I watched as their eyes widened in surprise.
“Yo! I thought you said that she wasn't around.” The dark-haired one whispered to him.
“Yeah, as you can see, she just got in.” He whispered back. “I thought she was spending the night at her school today.”
“I asked you a question, Nathan.”
“Hey, cuz.” He stopped putting up the banners and walked over. “I was actually thinking of having a party tonight with my friends.”
“And why would you have a party here?”
He shrugged, “I don't know… because I want to?”
“And who said you could?”
“Eve, no one said I could. I live here too, remember? I'm starting to feel like I'm actually kind of belonging somewhere ever since I got here, and I want to throw a party to celebrate that, I don't see what the big deal is. Can't you be happy for me?”
“Congratulations, but no.” I deadpanned. “This party is not happening, not on my watch.” I flickered my gaze behind him to his two friends. “You two. Out. Buh bye.”
“But Eve…”
“I said leave! Both of you!”
They mumbled something incoherent and threw me a glare before walking out.
“What's your problem?” Nathan yelled at me.
“What's my problem?”
“Yeah, what's your problem?! Ever since I got here, you've been acting like some kind of a bitch to me! I get that you don't like that I'm here in your space, and I totally have no problem with that, but you don't have to be a bitch to me all the time!” Tears began to roll down his cheeks, “Geez! I don't want to be here either, but I lost all of my family…”
“Nathan, wait…”
“You wanna eat this house, Eve? It's all yours! Eat it!”
“Nathan!”
He pushed past me and stormed out of the house, slamming the door behind him.
“Nathan!”
I didn't mean it like that.
I only wanted some quiet after my hectic day.
Even though I find him annoying sometimes, I'm still glad he's here. He's family, and after all he's been through, I'm happy that he still has us.
A sigh escaped my lips as I walked upstairs to my room and threw myself on my bed.
Just as I shut my eyes, my phone began to ring, and I pulled it out, only to see it was a video call from Katy.
“Hey, babes!” Katy said excitedly, “So, tell me, how did it go?”
“Great, I guess?”
“So, he didn't suspect anything?”
“Nope! He definitely didn't.”
“And he won't want to have another date with me, yeah?”
“Mhm hmm.” I nodded.
“You sure?”
“One hundred percent.”
She screamed in excitement. “Ahh! Eve, you're the sweetest bestie ever! I wish I were there right now! I would shower your face with my kisses.”
“Ew, please don't. That's disgusting.” I joked.
She laughed, tucking her ear behind her ear, “So what was he like?”
“Well…” I pushed my mind back to the moment I was sitting opposite him, and my heart couldn't help but skip a beat. Those eyes… those beautiful eyes…
“Eve!”
“Yes?! Sorry, sorry. Of course, what was he like? He um… he um… he was um… arrogant and…”
“Babes, that's not what I'm asking you.” She cut in. “Of course, all rich kids are arrogant, conceited and condescending. Um, hello? Have you forgotten that I'm one? I was asking what he looked like, is he cute or is he one fugly dude who's too embarrassed to show his face in public?”
“Well, actually, he's um… he's not that bad,” I commented, trying to keep my voice casual.
“Ooh, looks like someone has a crush.” She teased, wiggling her eyebrows.
“Katy, stop it. I don't.”
“You do.”
“I don't.”
“Hey, don't tell me you still haven't finally moved on from Cameron after all these months.”
“What? Of course, I have.” I knew I was lying to myself. Lying to myself is one thing, and admittedly, it is another. I'd rather be hit by a truck than admit that I still had feelings for Cameron. “Pfft! It's been months, babes, what do you take me for? I moved on from the jerk long ago.”
“That's my girl! That asshole didn't deserve you in the first place.”
“I'm done. Are you ready?” I heard Dexter's voice in the background.
“Yeah, sure, I am,” Katy replied to him.
“Who are you talking to?”
“Oh, it's Eve.”
“Hi, Eve!” Katy moved the phone to him, and he waved.
“Hi, Dexter.” I waved back.
“You both seem pretty dressed up. What's the occasion?” I asked in curiosity.
“Dexter wants me to meet his family,” Katy answered boisterously.
“Oh, my God, really?”
“Yes. He thinks it's time.”
“I'm so happy for you.”
“Aw, you're…”
Dexter snatched the phone from her. “We're late, babe. Sorry, Eve, but we gotta go. Bye!”
“Bye.”
The call got disconnected, and I tossed the phone away.
Even though I'm happy for Katy, I can't help but be jealous of her. I want what she has.
She has a man who treats her like a queen and loves her so dearly. Cameron didn't treat me like a queen in the slightest and never told me that he loved me once, but despite that, I loved him still. I saw him beyond his flaws and wanted to be him, but he messed everything up… like he always does.
It’s been months since we broke up, and he moved on pretty quickly, but my heart still aches for him.
Maybe i
t's because he's my first love.
You know what they say… you'll never truly get over your first love, and I suppose that's the situation for me right now.
