Chapter 4 The Best Relationship

The boy who had been talking suddenly went quiet. He felt a cold, piercing gaze lock onto him, like icy needles pricking the back of his neck, making his hair stand on end.

Maybe he had been too loud and disturbed David's rest. He quickly shut his mouth, but the other classmates didn't quiet down because of this small interruption.

Emily still hadn't come to the reunion. She didn't know that even in her absence, people would still talk about her.

As everyone reminisced, a girl suddenly spoke up, "Actually, I heard that Emily might have died..."

The room fell silent for a moment, but then a boy quickly reacted.

"Died? How? When?"

"No wonder no one could get in touch with her, and she never came to any reunions. I messaged her, but I never got a reply. So that's why..."

When someone dies, the whole world starts to love them.

"It could be true. I saw her about five or six years ago when I was at the hospital with my elderly relative. Emily was so thin, just skin and bones, but her belly was huge. Yes, exactly like that..." The girl sounded sad. "She looked so pitiful."

"That must have been a tumor, probably terminal. Just thinking about it is sad. I remember her family used to be wealthy. How did they suddenly lose all their money? I guess she couldn't handle all that wealth. I can't believe we couldn't reach her all these years because she was already gone. I remember David stayed at her place for a few months..."

Everyone looked at David. The crystal chandelier's light was cold and dazzling.

His expression was calm, his face like a meticulously carved sculpture, showing no emotion.

But the wine glass in his hand shattered under his unconscious grip, sharp glass shards piercing his palm, and crimson blood droplets quickly spilled onto the polished marble table.

David vaguely felt the pain in his palm, the sticky warmth making his thoughts blur. He lowered his eyes indifferently and grabbed his coat.

"Something came up, I have to go."

With that, David walked out of the room, ignoring everyone else.

Mia watched his back, her face slowly darkening.

Because of his departure, the room fell silent again until the girl who had spoken earlier slowly spoke up, "Speaking of which, haven't you heard a rumor?"

"What rumor?"

"About David? He doesn't have many rumors, does he?"

"I'm talking about Emily! High school for three years, college for two. I heard Emily chased David all the way abroad. They were secretly dating for five years."

Everyone's jaws dropped at her words, and Mia's face turned completely dark, her hand clenched at her side.

"Is this some kind of joke? Emily? That chubby girl? No way David would like someone like her! Stop making things up."

"Yeah! Is this your fantasy? If Emily could be with David, any of us here could marry him."

A boy instinctively retorted, "You can't say that. Emily was sick. In her freshman year, she wasn't chubby; she was tall and had fair skin, and she always spoke gently. I don't know what happened later..."

"Honestly, I was surprised when I first heard about it. If they were together, William, you should know, right? You guys are good friends." The girl looked at William.

"This is too far-fetched. Don't ask me." William coughed a few times, his expression becoming unnatural. "But, did Emily really die?"

Hearing this, one of David's fans got excited, "Of course! Someone just said Emily's belly was huge, and her body was weak. She must be dead! Otherwise, no one could contact her all these years."

In this day and age, and after so many years, any grudges from school should have faded away.

"Not necessarily. Maybe she did something shameful and is hiding. We shouldn't speculate about her." Mia had changed her expression and started interacting with everyone again, bringing the reunion back on track.

David left the scene, trying to stay low-key, and contacted his agent to arrange a ride home. Though his eyes were open, his eyeballs were trembling violently.

A corner of his world had been shattered unexpectedly.

His usually stable emotions were now in turmoil. Hearing about Emily's death brought a pain that wasn't physical but a deeper, sharper buzz, resonating in his skull.

Even though he was trying to maintain a calm exterior, in the relatively enclosed space of the hallway, it was cracking inch by inch.

Turning a corner, he bumped into someone.

"Sorry." The voice was soft, head lowered, but it felt familiar to David.

Seeing the figure stumble, David quickly helped her up.

Lily instinctively tried to grab something and ended up clutching David's tie. When she saw his face, her expression turned ugly.

Is Emerald City really this small? She ran into David again.

To avoid being recognized, David simply said, "Sorry," and left without saying more, his mind far from Lily. He needed to calm down.

Lily apologized instinctively, but when she looked up and met his sharp, cold eyes, her blood seemed to freeze, her fingers trembling uncontrollably.

Even after he left, Lily stood there.

She had just come out to deal with a stain on her dress, but she ran into him again.

How long would their entanglement last?

Looking down, Lily saw a finely crafted man's tie clip on the ground.

She picked it up and instinctively turned to chase after David, but stopped abruptly after a few steps.

What was she doing? They had no relationship anymore!

Not recognizing each other, not disturbing each other, not interfering with each other—that was the best relationship...
