Chapter Three — The Eyes in the Shadows
I barely slept that night.
The house was too quiet. The halls too still. Even the wind outside seemed afraid to make a sound.
I lay on my bed with my eyes wide open, staring at the ceiling. Shadows danced on the walls, shaped by the soft flicker of the candle on my table.
I tried to close my eyes.
But every time I did, I heard his voice in my head.
“Let them try. I’ll crush them all.”
My father’s words repeated again and again, sharp as a knife cutting into my mind.
And that other word… the one that wouldn’t leave me alone.
Alpha.
I didn’t know who he was. I didn’t know why the elders were speaking of him like a storm waiting to break.
But something inside me whispered… this was no small threat.
This was something bigger.
Something darker.
And I felt it crawling under my skin.
---
The next morning, I sat by the window again. The sky outside was dull and cloudy. The kind of sky that pressed on your chest and made the air feel heavy.
I watched the guards by the gate. They looked the same as always — standing tall, swords at their sides, blank looks on their faces.
But I noticed something new.
They kept glancing around.
They held their weapons tighter.
And they whispered to each other when they thought no one was watching.
It was small… but I saw it.
Fear.
Even the guards were afraid.
I pulled my shawl tighter around my shoulders and leaned closer to the glass.
Something was coming. I could feel it in the air… thick like a storm waiting to burst.
And yet…
What scared me more wasn’t what was coming.
It was the feeling that… maybe… it was already here.
---
Later that afternoon, Mira came in with my lunch.
She placed the tray on the table without a word.
I looked up at her. “Mira… is something wrong?”
She paused, her hands folding in front of her. “Why do you ask, my lady?”
I studied her face — the way her eyes shifted away from mine… the way her shoulders felt stiff.
“You seem… worried.”
Mira gave a soft, forced smile. “It’s nothing for you to worry about.”
Nothing.
That word again. The word people used when they didn’t want you to know the truth.
I lowered my eyes to the tray. “Does it have to do with… him?”
She went still.
I didn’t have to say the word.
Alpha.
Mira stepped closer and lowered her voice. “There are rumors.”
I looked up. “What kind of rumors?”
She glanced toward the door before speaking again. “Some say… he’s already inside the village.”
My heart skipped a beat.
“Inside?” I whispered.
Mira nodded. “No one knows for sure. But the elders are sending more men out. They’re watching every road, every house.”
I swallowed hard.
He was here.
Or at least… close enough to make even the elders fear.
I looked out the window again.
And for a brief moment…
I felt it.
Like someone’s eyes were on me.
---
I told myself it was nothing.
A trick of the wind. A passing thought.
But as the day dragged on, I couldn’t shake the feeling.
It stayed with me — following me from my chair to the window, from the window to the bed, from the bed to the door.
Like a shadow pressing against my back.
I wrapped my arms around myself and walked over to the window again. I pressed my forehead softly against the cool glass.
The guards were still there. The street looked empty.
But it didn’t feel empty.
I stared into the trees beyond the walls.
And I could have sworn… I saw something move.
---
Night came quickly.
The clouds covered the moon, leaving the mansion wrapped in shadows.
I tried to sleep.
But the feeling didn’t go away.
If anything… it grew stronger.
---
Around midnight, I sat up in bed, my heart thudding against my chest.
I didn’t know what woke me.
I only knew… I wasn’t alone.
I could feel it.
The kind of feeling that creeps under your skin and makes your hands cold.
I turned slowly toward the window.
At first, I saw nothing.
But then…
I saw it.
A shadow.
Standing at the edge of the trees.
Far away. Still.
But there.
Watching me.
---
I couldn’t breathe.
I wanted to scream.
But my voice refused to come out.
I stared… frozen… as the shadow stood there, half-hidden by the dark branches.
It didn’t move.
It didn’t run.
It just… watched.
I blinked once.
And when I opened my eyes…
It was gone.
---
I stumbled back from the window, my heart racing. My hands shook as I grabbed the edge of the table.
What was that?
Was it
real?
Or had my fear finally taken control of my mind?
I didn’t know.
But one thing I did know…
Whatever — whoever — that was…
They had been watching me.
And I had a terrible feeling…
They would be back.
