Chapter 4
Taking a kid to the doctor alone is definitely exhausting.
Tracy had a high fever, and Scarlett knew she couldn't avoid Alexander this time. She had no choice but to accept his help, even though she had decided to keep her distance from him.
Now, it seemed she could only rely on him for a bit of security.
Scarlett lowered her head in embarrassment and thanked him in a hoarse voice.
It seemed like Alexander always had bad luck when he got involved with her.
Scarlett was no stranger to the hospital. Ever since returning to the Phoenix City, Tracy would come here for any minor illness.
She ran to the front desk and asked, "Is Dr. Donovan here?"
Chase Donovan was Moira's classmate, and Tracy always saw him when she was sick.
The nurse checked the schedule and shook her head. "Dr. Donovan is on vacation for the next couple of days. He's not in the Phoenix City."
Just when things couldn't get worse.
Scarlett felt frustrated but had no other choice. She had to take Tracy to the emergency room.
Even though it was midnight, the ER was still crowded, and Scarlett couldn't sit still.
Alexander pulled out his phone and dialed a number. "I'm in the hospital lobby. Be here in ten minutes."
He hung up and adjusted Tracy to make her more comfortable. "It'll be sorted out soon."
Scarlett's lips moved slightly, but Alexander glanced at her, forcing her to swallow her thanks.
Fortunately, a few minutes later, a man in a white coat appeared in the lobby, looking around.
When he saw Alexander and the child in his arms, he instinctively said, "Oh my God!"
Alexander's expression was icy. "She's got a fever. Take a look."
He added a warning, "No nonsense."
Tyler Hamilton was a doctor, and despite his curiosity about Alexander, he had to prioritize the patient.
He immediately became serious. "Got it. Follow me."
A child's fever couldn't be delayed, and with Alexander involved, Tyler quickly instructed the nurse to get supplies and led them to a private room.
While examining Tracy, Tyler asked some basic questions about her medical history.
Scarlett answered fluently.
Tyler's gaze swept between the two of them. The woman looked anxious, wearing Alexander's coat.
But the child on the bed had golden curls and distinct features, clearly mixed-race.
As a professional, Tyler could tell she wasn't Alexander and Scarlett's child.
Especially since Alexander stood aside, listening to Scarlett's answers, his face growing darker.
It was as if he had been deceived by a married woman, now stuck bringing her child to the hospital.
Tyler quickly shook his head, dismissing the thought.
Scarlett grew more nervous seeing him like this. "Dr. Hamilton, how is Tracy?"
Tyler replied, "It's just a fever, but she's too young. She needs to be hospitalized for observation to prevent pneumonia."
Scarlett finally relaxed. "Thank you, Dr. Hamilton."
Tyler waved it off. "Thank Mr. King."
Alexander remained silent, standing quietly to the side.
Scarlett glanced at him, but he looked away immediately.
She lowered her head, staring at the floor, suppressing a sudden pang of heartache.
A nurse came in to administer an IV to Tracy.
She soon fell asleep.
Alexander walked over and grabbed Scarlett's arm. "Watch the kid. We need to talk."
The nurse, having been specially instructed by Tyler to treat this room's occupants carefully, agreed without hesitation.
Alexander thanked her and pulled Scarlett out of the room.
Scarlett stumbled, caught off guard.
He led her to Tyler's office.
Seeing them, Tyler quickly found an excuse to leave. "I'll go check on the kid."
He didn't forget to close the door behind him.
Scarlett was pinned against the wall, sensing Alexander's anger.
She didn't understand why.
At this moment, Scarlett looked pitiful.
She had been caught in the rain, her wet brown hair clinging to her face, making her look even more delicate and pale.
If not for her tear-stained eyes and bitten lip, she would resemble a mesmerizing siren.
Alexander couldn't help but touch her lip.
When they were together, Scarlett often bit her lip when she felt guilty or sad, despite their relationship being a facade of money.
They had loved each other so much back then.
Scarlett instinctively turned her face away as he touched her lip.
Alexander snapped back to reality.
Love?
Looking back, it seemed he was the only one trapped in that false love.
Alexander sneered, grabbing Scarlett's waist. "Did we break up because of that kid?"
Kid?
What kid?
Scarlett's mind went blank, taking a moment to realize Alexander had misunderstood.
He thought Tracy was her child.
Scarlett tried to explain. "What are you talking about? I..."
Her words were cut off by his sudden kiss.
Alexander's kiss wasn't affectionate; it was vengeful, biting her lip.
Scarlett winced, pushing him away. "What are you doing?"
The coat slipped off her shoulders due to her movements. Her thin nightgown exposed her legs and shoulders. Whether from cold or anger, Scarlett was trembling.
She suddenly realized.
Explain? Explain what?
She was now Sebastian's fiancée in name, and Alexander was her past, now her uncle in name.
There was no need for explanations between them.
Since Alexander had misunderstood, it was better to let it be.
If it meant they could avoid each other, it might be for the best.
Scarlett took a deep breath.
Alexander narrowed his eyes, staring at the blood on her lip.
Red like a rose.
He approached Scarlett, picking up the coat and draping it over her shoulders.
He then lifted her chin, looking into her red eyes coldly. "Weren't you going to thank me?"
He leaned closer. "Do you really think a simple thank you is enough?"
"Scarlett, we're adults. That's not how you thank someone."
"If others can, why can't I?"
