CHAPTER 4 You Were My Friend
Destin POV
Nyx is sitting on my couch, droning on about how I need to give Wren a chance before it is too late. According to her, she has seen three outcomes to our bond, and only one will make me happy. Little does she know, I have grown accustomed to being unhappy. I will live for eternity in my cabin alone and unhappy.
"Are you listening to me?" She snaps.
"Why would I want a mortal mate?" I groan. "She will die, and I will be left alone again. I do not wish to wish to be heartbroken again."
"She doesn't have to die," she reminds me. "She can be turned."
I slam my hands onto the table in front of me. "Have you learned nothing from the past? To turn her would put us back in the situation Macy just saved us from. I can't do that."
Nyx rolls her eyes. "I am not talking about black magic."
Pressing my fingers to my temples, I try to massage away the pain. "Leave."
"Not yet," she replies. "Is Macy the reason you aren't accepting the bond? Are you still in love with her?"
"No," I growl. "I am not in love with Macy. I haven't been for some time."
"For about a year, one week, two days, and seven hours?" She smirks.
"Exactly how long are you planning on staying?" I groan.
Nyx looks at the imaginary watch on her wrist. I hate how dramatic she can be. "I will be leaving right..."
Someone bangs on my door, and Nyx smiles. "Now."
"Who is it?" I call out.
There is a long pause. "Charlie."
The lights in my cabin flicker as my anger pulses. He has some nerve coming here after what I saw tonight. The way he clutched her to his chest keeps replaying in my mind. How dare he touch her?
"Go away," I shout.
"And that is my cue to leave," Nyx laughs.
"Don't open that fucking door," I warn her, but she does anyway.
Charlie is standing on the other side. He is half naked, wearing only the shorts I keep for him on the front porch. He wouldn't have run the whole way here if it weren't important, but I don't care for his excuses.
"What?" I snap.
"It's Wren," he breathes heavily. "You have to go get her."
I scoff loudly. "Why would I do that?"
"The triplets took her to Heat," he says, pushing his way into my cabin.
Nyx pushes past him and rushes out the door. She doesn't bother to say goodbye. It isn't like it matters. She will be back whether I like it or not.
"Is that why you have been avoiding Wren," Charlie changes the subject. "Because you are fucking Nyx."
"Settle down," I spit at him. "I am not fucking anyone. And if you are so worried about Wren hanging out with the Triplets, why did you let her leave?"
"She didn't give me a choice," he runs his fingers through his red hair. "She is the Princess. I can't defy her."
I want to pretend like I don't give a fuck, but the triplets are trouble. On more than one occasion, they have offered me a "night I wouldn't forget." Of course, I turned them down. They aren't my type. Plus, I don't have use for one woman, much less three. I pity the man who ends up in their crosshairs.
The only thing worse than the triplets is Heat. Since the Moon Goddess took away fated mates, the werewolf community has gone wild. Knowing there is no fated mate waiting for them has made many of them lose their inhibitions. They meet up at clubs like Heat for a quick fuck. Don't get me wrong. They can do whatever they want, but it doesn't seem like the type of scene Wren should be a part of. She has done her fair share of partying, but not at a place like Heat.
Just the thought of her there makes my skin crawl. I need to get Charlie out of my fucking house before I kill him for letting her go there.
"Maybe they didn't go to Heat," I try to calm myself down.
"I fucking followed them," he snaps. "Go get her."
"Why do you care so fucking much?" I demand to know.
Charlie growls. "Why don't you care? She is your mate. That fucking means something."
"It means something to you," I remind him. "We have been through this. So, tell me. Why do you care?"
"I love her!" He finally shouts.
"You son-of-a-bitch," I scream.
I close the distance between us and push Charlie back. He stumbles back and hits the wall. His body slides down the wall, and I jump on top of him. After I deliver several punches to his face, I step back. My knuckles are covered in blood. I expect him to fight back, but he doesn't. He wipes the blood from his face and climbs back to his feet.
"You were my friend," I snap at him.
"I am still your friend," he spits out.
"No," I shake my head. "You are not. You stopped being my friend the moment you went after my mate."
He throws his head back and laughs. "I thought you didn't care."
"Get the fuck out of my cabin," I push him again. "Don't come back."
Charlie stumbles back. "If you aren't going to accept the bond, then reject her. Let her be with someone who will love her and appreciate her."
"And I suppose you think that is you," I laugh.
"I can make her happier than you ever could," he says before storming out.
Standing in my doorway, I watch him shift into his red wolf. He runs off into the night, and I slam my door.
"Fuck him," I shout to no one.
I pace my floor, trying to convince myself to stay in the cabin, but I know I won't. Ripping off my shirt, I change into a clean one. If I am going to get into Heat, I will have to look the part.
