Chapter 17.
Can he read minds? Does he know what I am thinking about? With these thoughts, Laurel turned to the window. She was almost at her apartment. They obviously knew more than they were letting on.
She watched as Cecil expertly swerved to the right, entering the compound. Laurel was eager to get down. It's been 3 days but she truly missed her apartment. The dull paintings and tidiness of Boss Lucas's apartment was driving her crazy. She wanted nothing more than to take one last look at her colorful and messy room.
It was an odd request but Laurel knew it would make her satisfied. Immediately Cecil packed neatly, she tried to open the car door. It was locked. She narrowed her eyes at the rearview mirror, finding two pairs of eyes watching her critically.
'Is this really necessary?" Laurel had to ask. Did they think she would run away in her bunny love pajamas? Clearly they didn't know her as she thought they did. Laurel shook her head as she waited for the lectures.
'We are here." Cecil announced to his boss formally.
Laurel rolled her eyes impatiently. 'Of course we are here. Now open the door let me go and get my cat." Well, she had other plans in mind besides getting a nonexistent cat and seeing her messy apartment for the last time. She hoped they'd let her take the things precious to her knowing that she'd be living in his home for a very long time.
That is, if her plans don't work. Laurel was betting every fiber of her being for it to work. And if it didn't work out, she could kiss her chance of escape good bye. Besides what good is a plan without A, B and C? Making Cecil her friend was the plan A which wasn't executed well. In fact, it didn't work out. This was plan b and this had to work or else…
'Hold on." Cecil instructed.
It seemed like they were waiting for something or rather someone. Laurel squirmed on her seat. It was like she had ants in her pants. Suddenly someone knocked on Cecil's window. The glass slid down to reveal…
'Matteo!" Laurel called out in excitement. She was a bit confused. 'How did you know I am here? Have you being waiting for me? I told you not to look for me!"
Matteo cleared his throat as he found Laurel. He also had a shocked look on his face. 'I received a strange call asking me to come to your compound. I was directed here. Who are this people?"
Laurel casted a dry look at Lucas. It looked like he enjoyed seeing her squirm in a bunny love pajamas. 'They are-are-m-my-friends." Why am I stuttering?
'Are you okay?" Matteo was suspicious. He wanted to know if his friend was doing okay. If his boss wasn't treating her fine, he wouldn't accept it whether he was the third command or not.
Laurel wanted to tell him something but decided against it. It would only ruin her plans of escape. She would tell him everything later. 'I am fine. There is absolutely okay." She forced a smile.
If only she knew how clueless she was…
Matteo glanced back to the men waiting for his attention. The smirk on Boss Lucas' face was no longer there and with coordinated movements, he got out of the car.
Laurel wished she could hear what Matteo and Boss Lucas discussed. She couldn't read their lips. She was a bit offended at the secrecy. She hissed, attracting a glare from Cecil.
'What?!" Laurel snapped. She hoped Matteo wouldn't tell them about the nonexistent cat. It would blow cover. She hissed again.
Cecil ignored her. He knew she was pissed off and didn't want to ruffle her tail. The only person who was allowed to do that was his boss. He had been surprised to hear that she had a cat. It suited her personality though; Cecil had thought so until he got the information that Laurel had no cat. It was amazing how she had convinced the boss to leave the most important meeting just to follow her to get a nonexistent cat.
Mean while…
'She is smart; I'll give it to her." Luis nodded in agreement to his boss' earlier statement. He shifted his weight to one leg in deep thoughts.
'I know. Guard the area well. I don't want any surprise. I hope you have everything contained? " Lucas started. There was a reason he left his meeting to come here. It wasn't to satisfy his curiosity about Laurel but also to confirm what Luis had discovered.
On his way to Laurel's apartment, Luis had called, telling him about the new discovery. He had found out where his Boss' rival spy resided. He was a young boy of about 16 and he lived next door to Laurel's apartment.
Luis had only found out three days ago. He called to warn his Boss to tread with caution as Laurel had insisted on getting a nonexistent cat thanks to the update. Children could be cunning.
'Yes Boss."
Lucas nodded, patting the young man's back to dismiss him. Now he knew why Silas choose him to be the third in command. But he was living a double life and he wondered how Laurel will take it if she found out her best friend wasn't who he was. He felt disturbed for some reason he didn't know.
He knew to Laurel, his conversation with Luis looked like he was trying to intimidate him but it was better if she thought that way. He would patiently wait for when Luis chose to reveal his true identity. He wouldn't come in between them. But if Luis hurt her…
Lucas stopped himself. 'What am I thinking?" He walked back to the car.
Back in the car, Laurel saw red. To her, he had just intimidated her friend to the point the poor man looked pale.
