Chapter 16.
A trick he is willing to fall for. He wanted to know what she had up her sleeves. It was rare as Lucas knew what she was up to and even asked all about her personality thanks to Luis. She intrigued him every day and Lucas wanted to see the new plan she's devised. During the time she was in the house, Cecil watched her. She couldn't see him around the house because Cecil was very good at hiding himself. If only she had looked close, she would have found him lurking in the shadows waiting for her to escape and then lunge.
So far, she hadn't broken any rule and had stayed inside her room like an old lady, occasionally coming out to stroll around the house. Cecil had reported to him that he has found her staring at the lock suspiciously. Lucas smiled as he knew she wanted to find her way out.
The woman from last night was probably safe in her home. The both of them were foolish. Laurel was foolish to think he would kill an innocent woman who knew nothing about him except his reputation as a businessman of course while the woman was foolish to think she'd die if she slept with him. Yes, she had asked foolish questions, he was angry, but it wasn't enough to take her life.
The fear was directed intentionally and it served its purpose well. He didn't care if the woman really knew who he was. The day she would die is when she sees something like Laurel had seen and tattled them out. The terrified woman was safe. For now.
Lucas straightened his shoulders. 'Fine. I know you wouldn't do the things I warned you about." He picked up his bag and smirked when he heard her sigh in relieve. She was cute.
Then she looked alarmed after a moment. 'Are we going now?"
He scanned her outfit, wanting to tease her even more. 'This is the only chance you get. It is either now or never."
Laurel knew what that meant. It meant he wasn't giving her any chance to change her outfit or to even look presentable. She didn't want to imagine what her neighbors would say when they see two men follow her into her apartment. Because it looked to her like Boss Lucas was ready to abandon his meeting just to make sure she didn't do what he warned her about. To escape.
She could pretend they were her body guard…but they aren't going to fool Mrs. Teresa. That self-righteous woman was vicious! The problem her was her bunny love pajamas. She cringed at the thought of having Mrs. Teresa welcome her at the elevator's door.
Laurel puffed when she saw the outstretched hands of Boss Lucas. He was asking her to take the lead of course. She turned only to find Cecil waiting for her beside the wide open front door.
'When did he come in-" Laurel muttered in confusion. Has he done the job of taking the young woman out quickly? Did he kill her the way she looked? She narrowed her eyes on his clothing's to find any drop of blood on his shirt. There was nothing. Then she remembered how clean he was. Maybe he had done the job neatly. She thought.
However, he was fast. Had he been listening to their conversation the whole time? Laurel looked over her shoulders, finding Lucas on his phone. He was talking to someone on the phone and with the relaxed look on his face, it looked like he was talking to Luis.
Maybe Luis was the key in all things or maybe she's just delusional. Laurel almost felt dizzy from all the thinking. She missed a step and Lucas was beside her in an instant.
'Watch your step. I don't want your blood to stain my rug."
Laurel scoffed in irritation. What's with him and saying weird things? Although she wouldn't put the saying past him. He was capable of being unhappy just because of a little stain. It shouldn't be her blood. Just not her blood.
She eyed Cecil wearily as he opened the doors wider. He was clearly amused that she was to follow Boss Lucas in her pajamas. She imagined bashing his head against the wall but it would be futile. She knew that very well.
'You've got to be kidding me." Laurel muttered under her breath as she found what looks like a new Aventador Lamborghini with its door open waiting for her to enter in. She threw Boss Lucas a haughty look just to tell him she wasn't impressed.
'What's the fuss about?" She tried to ask the cold man, making his way elegantly to the other side of the car.
'I am attending a meeting after this have you forgotten?" He gracefully slid into the car, leaving Laurel speechless. She slid into the car and was met with warmth. It was new, unlike the cold buses she'd to bode while going home during winter.
It was really warm and she wasn't complaining.
….
The ride to her apartment was a long one. It was probably due to how silent the drive was. It was quiet in the car and it brought back memories of her family. It was when Antonia wasn't the judgmental bitch she was now and she wasn't reckless. They were happy and it reflected in their high pitched voices during drives.
Her dad would try the sing along weird songs of 1990s; her mother would express her disapproval by switching the radio to the Today's news, Antonia would be eager to tell their parents her day in school while herself was comfortable with playing games on her tablet. It was chaotic but Laurel knew she was happy.
Now, Laurel didn't know any longer whether she was happy or sad. She raised her head to find Lucas staring at her from the rearviewview mirror. He had an unreadable expression on his face.
