Vow to Avenge
The fall made my body rush with sensations of fear and terror as I gaze up to see the rogues watching me plummet to the ground. A loud smack hits my back, sending thousands of needle picks piercing through my entire system. Deeply submerged in the ice-cold water I sink like a rock, not able to move any part of my body. I feel my vision fading as the life in me begins to leave my body behind.
Staring at the full moon above me, it’s light fading the deeper I go, I wonder if this was my end. Was this it then? Was I about to die? Somehow that didn’t seem so bad. Maybe, if the moon goddess allows it, I can be rejoined with my father and mother, with Myron and the rest of my pack members. Wanting to go peacefully I couldn’t help the sudden rage that bursts inside of me at that moment.
Why? Why do the underserving get whatever they wanted? Why do they get to win? How could my uncle betray us like this and still get everything he ever wanted? Were we that bad of people to deserve a death like this? To be slaughtered and tortured by the hands of those rogues and that man? Why couldn’t we be the victors of this tragedy?
The hate builds even higher as the thoughts kept coming.
NO.
I couldn’t let it end like this. It wasn’t fair. None of it was fair. My people didn’t deserve to die in this way. They were all good people. They lived with so much love and cared for one another. We all had each other’s backs when needed. Flashes of memories race through my mind of everyone I hold dear. Of all the pups that were so full of life and hope of the future. Gone. Without ever getting a chance to thrive in their young lives, to grow into wonderful beings, to meet their wolves, to find their mates and have a family to call their own.
It wasn’t fair. I never got to meet her. I never got to meet my wolf, my other half.
The hate just kept on building. I’ve never felt such a strong emotion rise up in me as the events of my mother’s death, finding my pack members in the state of despair and mangled bodies in pools of blood, of my best friend torn into shreds and finding my father in a heap of dead bodies, overthrew me.
I vowed to get revenge for them.
Even if I die here at this moment, I vowed with every last fiber of my being that I will avenge my people. I will take revenge on those who took that life from us all. I would sell my soul if I had too to destroy them. Every last one of them. They all deserved to live a life of pure hell, and I will bring forth that painful existence to them.
They will all die. I’ll make sure of it. And with that last dying thought, with the full moon fading to nothingness, my world finally goes dark for the last time.
A slight gentle breeze hits my skin in a soothing caress. Opening my eyes, I am blinded by an earthly glow of sunlight. I gaze at the golden sway of grass that was soft against my skin. Slowly rising to a sitting position, I look all around me to find myself in a beautiful field of gold.
There were trees spread around from each other, giving shade as their green leafy limbs swayed along with the breeze of the air. There was nothing for miles and miles in all directions.
The clouds above were full of white fluff and gently rolled by at leisure. Was I dead? Was this my heaven? I thought I would be with my loved ones, together in harmony after death. But I was all alone. I sit there not knowing what to do or where to go. I keep looking around me until finally I spot a figure in the distance, sitting against a tree, looking for all the world at peace.
Standing up I carefully walk to that figure. As I got closer I realized it was a young woman with dark flowing hair wearing a long white dress like tunic with her arms bare. She sat with a smile as she ran her hand gently against a soft looking, washed out grey wolf.
At first I thought it was my mother’s wolf but looking closer I could tell it wasn’t her. This wolf looked more gentle, more confident, and more graceful. I immediately knew it was a female wolf. Her physic was leaner and feminine. She was beautiful.
She had her head in the woman’s lap, her eyes closed as if completely in bliss of the woman’s touch. Suddenly the woman leans down and whispers something to the wolf, making me stop in my tracks.
There was something about them both that made me feel so at ease, like I have known them my entire life, yet never seen either of them before. The wolf opens her eyes and lifts her head, staring in my direction.
She rises from her sitting position and trots over to me carefully. The woman just watches her as she looks to us, still not saying a word to me. I wait until the wolf finally reaches me before kneeling at her level to gaze into her eyes.
Funny, I had no fear of her at all.
Sadness and grief were there in those beautiful bluish grey orbs of hers. I wasn’t sure why she was feeling so sad, but my heart twisted in pain only wanting to comfort her. I reach out my hand and watch as she immediately places her snout into my palm.
A feeling of heartache, yet joy as well, waves into my body. Lifting my other hand, I graze the top of her head in a gentle caress, and she shivers with pleasure. She then steps closer to me and rubs her head against my chest, nearly making me fall backwards.
A bright smile overtakes my face as I cuddle into her and continue to stroke her soft fur. She sits on her hind legs and gazes up at me once more. Looking deep into her eyes I instantly knew that she was my wolf. Which meant the woman at the tree…
Looking behind her I see the woman was now standing with a smile. She was breathtaking as she watches us with love and joy. Standing back up, my wolf then grazes my legs and stood next to me, facing the woman as well.
“Are you Selene, the moon goddess?” My voice echoes softly.
She just gives me a brighter smile. Lifting up a fisted hand she uncurls her fingers revealing her palm full of silver dust. She reaches it close to her lips and gently blows the dust that suddenly swirls in my direction.
Not sure what she was doing, I close my eyes tightly and I instantly feel my body submerged in cool water. My breath hitches as I could no longer breathe that fresh air from a moment before.
What was happening?!
I quickly open my eyes to find a deep dark blue void surrounding me. I struggle with the water until I see the woman flowing down to me, her hair and dress spread out like petals from a blossoming flower, the blue light behind her making her look like an angel of the sea. She smiles in the water as she reaches out her arms to me. Feeling the safety of her embrace I reach out to her, clasping her hands, and I suddenly feel the rush of being pulled up.
I take a large gasp of air as soon as my head broke the surface of the water. Desperately looking around me I find the shore not too far from my left and swim in that direction. I didn’t take two steps before I hit the lake floor and pull myself out of the water.
My body felt beat up and heavy as I lay there on the ground, breathing heavily as if I held my breath for far too long. Closing my eyes I let the sunlight warm my flesh as the warm breeze slightly made goosebumps on my skin.
Snapping my eyes open I realized that I should be freezing, not feeling warmth. It was also night when I fell in, not daytime. Lifting my head, I look around the forest to find there was no snow anywhere near me. In fact, the grass was bright with greenery, the trees were covered in vibrant green leaves, and the sun was bright in the sky, giving a warm atmosphere in the air. Flowers were blooming everywhere, and I could hear the birds chirping in the nearby distance.
With difficulty I stand up, not understanding why it seemed to look like early spring instead the dead of winter. Remembering what had occurred on the cliff I quickly look up to see there was no one there. It was as if time itself had changed. Feeling too out in the open, I quickly limp into the woods to figure out what I needed to do next.
I wince as my right leg throbbed in pain. Finding a decent boulder to sit on, I rest for a few moments to catch my breath. It wasn’t just my leg that hurt, but my left shoulder and my ribs felt bruised. Must have been from the impact of the water. It was a long way down and I was still baffled on how I survived that fall.
I look down at my leg and stare. Blinking, I look at the clothes I was wearing. These were not my pajamas that I was dead certain I was wearing before I fell. I wore black jeans that had tears and holes in them. There were even shoes on my feet that I definitely knew I never owed before. They weren’t even my style. They were beat up and worn, even the sole was coming apart.
I look down at the shirt I was wearing to find a baggy checkered overshirt that was way too big and had seen better days, along with a black tank top. What the hell was I wearing here?
I suddenly hear rustling of bushes not far from my left. Standing up I stare in that direction with my heart in my throat. Not waiting to see what it was, I quickly get the hell out of there and head in the direction of my home.
Will the rogues, my uncle and that man still be there? I wasn’t sure, but I needed to know and see for myself the state my home was now in. There had to be someone in my pack that survived this catastrophe…right?
Trying my best to ignore my pain, I limp my way back up the large hill as silently as I possibly could go. But what I find once I get there was definitely something I was not expecting and threw me in a loop of confusion.
