Chapter 02
“I already told you what I want, right?” Lilian replied.
“Ma'am, why do you insist on seeing my client if he doesn't want to see you again?” Gabriel asked politely, but Lilian felt as if the man had slapped her with his words, and she tensed up as she fought the urge to slap him back, but at the last moment, she restrained herself.
“Gabriel, if you continue to stand in front of me, holding me in this room, I will scream at the top of my lungs and say that you are harassing me!” She took a deep breath before saying calmly.
Gabriel didn't believe the woman's threat, and figured she was just bluffing. Seeing this, Gabriel didn't move, but smiled at her, making Lilian even more irritated.
“All right, but don't blame me later if you end up at the police station.” The corners of her lips lifted, revealing a cold, evil, charming smile before she screamed. “HELP... HELP...”
"Ma'am, please stop. Okay, okay... I'll call Mr. Legrand now.“ Gabriel had no choice but to call his boss, and Lilian enjoyed seeing Gabriel's shocked expression.
”Doctor, you should have done that earlier. Why make me waste my energy screaming and hurting my throat?" Lilian replied, rubbing her smooth neck.
Lilian ignored him and went back into the room, sitting down in the chair as she looked at the lawyer, and a bitter smile formed on her lips as she vaguely heard Gabriel talking on the phone.
She still couldn't believe that Ethan had blocked her phone number, and feeling irritated, she emptied a glass of water to suppress her anger while waiting for Gabriel to finish talking to Ethan.
Her heart was beating faster than normal for unknown reasons, and she was nervous about talking to Ethan.
“Okay, you can talk to the president now!” Gabriel said, offering his cell phone to Lilian.
Lilian's hands trembled slightly as she took the phone, and after taking a deep breath, she put the phone to her ear, but before she could say anything, she heard Ethan's cold tone on the other end of the line.
“You said you wanted to talk to me. Why are you silent now?” Ethan's attitude made Lilian reconsider her request for a divorce, and she clutched the phone tightly, holding back her anger.
“Why did you send your lawyer to give me these divorce papers?” she asked.
“Let's get straight to the point. Do you need more compensation money?” Ethan asked casually, but his words sounded like nails piercing Lilian's heart.
“Do you think I married you for your money?” she asked coldly.
“Just tell me how much you want, Lilian, and I'll give it to you, because money is no problem!” Hearing Ethan humiliate her with his words, she would have cried if she had been alone in the room, but she tried to hold back her tears as she calmed her emotions.
“Ethan, I just want to know why? Why did you ask for a divorce?” She just wanted to know that.
“Do you remember why we got married, Lilian?” Ethan replied with another question, and Lilian didn't answer, because she remembered. Their marriage was an agreement between their grandparents.
Carlos Arbex forced Lilian to marry a member of the Legrand family, and this marriage began for money and power, without love between the two people involved. If she could give birth to a son for the Legrand family, they promised to bring good luck to her family, and the family business would certainly become the largest in the country.
Married for convenience, something Lilian hated most, but she couldn't refuse her grandfather and father at the time, and her only option was to accept the agreement and marry the man she had never met before. However, she was foolish enough to make a big mistake after marrying Ethan Legrand: she fell madly in love with him.
“Lilian, you may have forgotten, but we've been married for five years, and you still haven't gotten pregnant, and my family is unhappy about it,” Ethan continued. “What can I do now? I can't wait another year. You know that, right?”
“I understand!” Lilian interrupted him, and her heart was truly hurt when she heard his reason.
She didn't need his words to cut her already wounded heart.
During their five years of marriage, she had tried in many ways to get pregnant, and even with all the possible treatments, nothing had worked.
Lilian felt like she was living in hell during her marriage, stressed out because she couldn't get pregnant, and she still had to endure the humiliation of her mother-in-law, who verbally abused her almost every day.
The most painful part was that her parents also despised her because, for five years, she couldn't have a child and couldn't keep Ethan's heart.
“Now sign the papers and stop making a scene, Lilian! And don't worry... I'll give you alimony, enough for you to spend the rest of your life. You won't suffer after you divorce me.” He said casually, but Lilian felt as if all the blood was rushing to her face.
She feels completely irritated when she hears his words.
“I'll sign!” Lilian said without hesitation. “But if you ever regret this decision and want me back, you won't get that chance, Ethan.”
“Don't worry, because that will never happen!” Ethan ended the call without giving her a chance to say anything, and Lilian felt her eyes blur as soon as the phone line abruptly dropped.
In the next moment, Lilian didn't say a word, and just listened to Gabriel explain the divorce papers, but her mind was plunged into a dark abyss deep in her heart.
The marriage she had dreamed of was over just like that.
Divorce had never crossed her mind, as she believed Ethan would never divorce her, since he had always been kind to her and never asked her to do anything. But now she realized that her five-year marriage to Ethan was just a facade, and his kindness was just a mirage.
She hated herself because she had always believed that Ethan would love her one day.
