Walk away

Rex

We were about fifty men all lined up in front of Draco, one of the oldest and dangerous men in this organization.

We were all in what seemed like a work lobby in the bar. It looked like a normal area but there were only lockers and a few chairs scattered around.

The room was painted in blue and it had colored lights hanging from above, typical bar settings.

Draco had been with them ever since he was a child, merciless and trained to put Dante’s life before his, he was Dante’s personal guard.

“This isn’t no place for liars or snitches, any bitch who snitches is going to answer to me, alright?” His tone was laced with warning and we all nodded.

“If the feds come sniffing your ass for information, failure to protect this legal enterprise brings nothing but calamity. We all run legal shit here, the feds are just jealous because we have high end lawyers who enables we don’t overpay to the government!” He announced and I almost scoffed.

This make-believe story was insane. Why would we be interested in a legal hotel that pays taxes? It all makes no sense.

“Everything about us is confidential, from the customers you serve, to the things you see in the rooms of our clients. If you notice any suspicious activity, do well to report it to me immediately! You’ll be trained on self defense because things get messy with the Feds around here once in a while.” He briefed and this time I stifled a laugh.

“Any questions!”

“Since there’s none, I’ll tell you this. The Sinclair aren’t one to toy with. Stealing and snitching doesn’t end well… We encourage our workers to have a family, happy lives lead to productivity and this means more income for everyone.” This sounded too genuine to be real and it got me thinking.

These ruthless bastards were only interested in families in order to use them as a form of leverage against the staff.

Now it was making a little sense. They recruit more family men, get dirt on them and drag them into illegal work with threats of killing their families.

Brilliant, all this evidence will be greatly appreciated in court, I concealed a smile as I looked at my toe, there was a tiny bug inside of my boots, specially made to capture even the tiniest whispers.

Excitement travelled round my body as I pictured myself being in front of a judge and tabling a hundred and one pieces of evidence as to why we need to haul every ass involved in this crime to prison.

“You are not to go beyond the first floors without my knowledge, the boss is here.” He muttered softly and we all lifted our heads up as the air grew tense.

The door opened to reveal Dante, dressed in all black, the 6’2 ft demon who was the new terror of town.

I felt my body tremble for a moment as I took in his whole sight, it was rare to see him but his name was in the mouth of every damn person in this town.

“This is your employer, Dante Sinclair, popularly known as BOSS.” Draco introduced and Dante smiled, lighting up a cigarette as he stared at us one after the other.

I didn’t know if it was nervousness that caused it or the tension but it seemed like he stared at me longer than he did for others.

I gulped hard, bracing myself up as I stared at the door. “Have you briefed them?” His voice sent chills down my spine and I braced myself for the most dangerous phase of my career.

“Yes Boss, these men were specially handpicked and accessed by me.” Draco responded.

“I don’t want no bitch talking to the Feds about my business, I run a very good and legitimate business that feeds millions of people, no asshole is going to bring down what my family has worked so hard on for years.” I could hear the threat in his voice and while others trembled beside me, I was undaunted.

“Form two lines, if you wish to be part of the bartenders to the left and if you wish to work in the hotel to the right.” Draco informed and while they all scurried to the left and right, I remained in the same position.

“What do you want?” Dante demanded as he looked me dead in the eyes and without stuttering, I spoke.

“I want to be your guard, I want to protect you.” I answered and Draco burst into laughter along with a few other guys.

“Clown, who the fuck do you think you are? Do you think you’ve got what it takes to protect Boss? Do you think this is some shitty place where you can walk in and state what you want?” Draco demanded through gritted teeth, he was a few inches away from me and he stared at me with disgust.

His fists were clenched and I was just a word away from getting punched.

“I’m willing to learn what I don’t know. I’m willing to train very hard until I can be fit to protect Boss.” I retorted, my brave act making something tingle in Dante’s eyes.

Seeing his eyes brighten up had a crazy reaction on me, I felt slight excitement explode inside of me as my heart raced for no reason.

“I’ll be the one to decide whether you are fit or not and I say—“ His huge hand had grabbed my collar and he was seething in anger

“That’s enough Draco, let go of him.” Dante announced and with a grunt, Draco released me roughly but years in training has shaped me and I stood firm like it was nothing and I saw Dante conceal a small smile.

“Walk with me.” He muttered to Draco who opened the door, it was so obvious he had a lot to say.

I got numerous snickers and snorts from a few guys, if only they knew who I was. This mission was nothing but thrilling and I hope in a few days time, Aaron will be able to join me.

“Boss wants to see you. Fifth office when you turn right.” A new guy popped his head from the door and with a snarl, I walked out.

I glanced around carefully as I walked towards his office, noticing that the security cameras didn’t reach the side of his office.

I was about to knock when I heard them talking. “I don’t trust that fucker! He seems like he’ll snitch a lot!” Draco complained.

“He seems like a good piece of work, maybe he can be useful.”

“But Boss, your safety is what matters the most to me. I don’t want no asshole feeding the cops with words from us. He has no family, there’s no leverage on him… I feel we’re making a huge mistake.”

“I don’t trust a single soul here, Draco but you know the drill, no one comes in here and walks out alive, nobody works with the Feds and lasts a week in my organization. I’ll give him the luxury of picking the type of death he wants if I discover he’s a police officer.” These words sent chills down my spine and it was hard to stop my hands from shaking.

I was faced with two options, I could either walk into his office and get myself killed after a few weeks or I could walk out of this damn crib, quit my job and move to a remote place to start a new life.
