Will you marry me!? Cont... Pt4

“Ma’am?”

Looking up with bewildered eyes, Resena was finally able to get a good look at the man. Standing before her was a tall and handsome man. He had beautiful brown skin, big almond eyes that were light brown and dark low-cut hair. His beard and mustache were cut close and immaculate. Startled and embarrassed, Resena stood up again wiping the tears out of her eyes.

“I’m sorry! I’ve troubled you long enough. Please excuse me and again I am so sorry!”

The young man started at Resena even more confused. Why was she so apologetic? He was the one that made the decision to bother her.

“Ma’am, there’s no need to apologize. Um, did you want me to call that service?”

“What service?”

“The service that will help you get to the shelter?”

Now Resena was confused. What was he talking about?

“I’m sorry? What shelter?”

“Hu…um, ma’am you’re not going to the homeless shelter on Shelton?”

Bewildered, Resena’s eyes grew large, had she looked such a mess that this man assumed she was homeless! In hindsight, Resena could understand. Her clothes were ragged, her hair undone, her skin dry and pasty from cleaning supplies and dirt, and to top it all off, here she sat on a bench asleep with five bags of clothing. Feeling even more embarrassed, Resena couldn’t help but think,

“I would have probably thought that too.”

Ashamed of her appearance, Resena’s eyes began to water up. Had it been that long since she was well cared for? Her parents died when she was only 9yrs old. It had been a car accident that took their lives. Shortly after, she moved into her evil aunt and uncle’s home and from that point on, the torture began. All of her trinkets, her clothing, and photos of her parents had been destroyed by her aunt and cousin. Necessities like food, water, and bathing came to her in scarce proportions. Yes, she too would have thought she was homeless. Wiping her eyes, Resena looked up at the now concerned man,

“That won’t be necessary sir. I wasn’t heading to the homeless shelter.”

“So then where were you going?”

“To the dry cleaners on Bellum Ave.”

The man could hardly believe what he was hearing. The dry cleaners! He didn’t know where she was coming from, but he knew the dry cleaners was still at least two miles and to top it off she had over five bags with her! It was no wonder she fell asleep. The lady was exhausted!

“Ma’am, are you telling me you were going to walk to the shop? With these bags!? That’s impossible!”

“No, it’s my chores”

“Cho….”

Just then, the young man realized why this woman looked so ragged. She was a servant for a rich family. A family that was cruel enough to make this lady walk miles with bags of clothes. A family that would possibly punish this woman for not completing her task. At that moment, he knew what he had to do.

“Um, the cleaners are going to be open for another 30 minutes, they close at 5:30 on Wednesdays, why don’t I give you a ride?”

Resena could hardly believe her ears. Had this man just offered to save her?! No, it was too good to be true. She had to ask just to make sure.

“Are you saying you will drive me to the cleaners shop?”

“Yeah. I’ll take you. Look lady, that walk is brutal even without the bags and there is no way you would make it on time even with the extra 15 minutes. So, I don’t mind taking you, but we better get a move on. My car is right over there.”

Without hesitating any further, Resena quickly began grabbing her bags, the young man walked over and grabbed some bags. If he was some crazed killer at least she wouldn’t be in that hellish house anymore so either way he would be an angel to her. The young man popped his trunk and placed the bags into the truck. His car was nice, whoever he was, he must’ve come from money. After placing all the bags into the trunk, the young man quickly went over to the passenger side of the car to open the door for Resena. Quickly, she hopped into the car, and he closed the door. As she began putting her seatbelt on, it dawned on her that this man was extremely nice.

“How long has it been since someone gave me a kind gesture?”

Thinking back, Resena realized no one had been this nice since her friend Ella. The other maids and servants were not exactly “mean” to her, but after the firing of Ella none of them wanted to interact with her. Resena had always understood their plights however, so she never held it against anyone. The fear of losing your livelihood can make a person react in all kinds of ways. Resena remained in thoughts about Ella until the car started. The sound made her jump a little, this caused the man to look over and chuckle.

“Have you ever been in a car?”

“Oh, yes. The sound just startled me a bit. My apologies.”

It troubled the man how often this lady apologized. “She apologizes for everything.” He thought as he began to drive off. “The people she works for must really be cruel.” Sensing an awkward silence approaching, the young man decided to introduce himself.

“I’m Julius by the way. Julius Spencer. Figured I’d tell you my name, so it doesn’t feel so awkward.”

“Oh, yes, I supposed it could be a little awkward. Well, it’s very nice to meet you, Mr. Spencer, my name is Resena.”

“Just Julius, and is that it or do you have a last name?”

That question almost caught Resena off guard. How long had it been since she was able to say her last name. In the house, her aunt and uncle told her she was never allowed to say her full name as they didn’t want people to know the daughter of such a prominent family was being treated like a servant, especially by her own family.

So? Do you have a last name?”

“Oh! Yes! I’m sorry! It’s Blackwell. Resena Blackwell.”

“Blackwell? I know I’ve heard that name before.” Julius thought hard regarding Resena’s name. He knew he had heard that last name before, but he didn’t know where. He thought about asking Resena, but he didn’t want to be intrusive. For a moment it seemed as though she didn’t want to say her last name at all. Finally, they arrived at the cleaner’s shop.
