Will you marry me? Cont...Pt2
“They didn’t say, but I’m sure that’s what it was. She was always really kind to the young miss.”
“That’s awful! Why’d they even take her in if they didn’t want to take care of her?”
“Don’t you know?”
“Know what?”
Sighs “I swear you newbie maids don’t know anything. The young miss was left a fortune by her parents but to keep it protected, no dowry could be paid out to whoever her caretakers were until she weds. Furthermore, her husband will have no access to the fortune until at least five years of marriage OR, until the misses conceive a child.”
“Oh wow! So that’s why the mistress has started looking up bachelors. I had thought she was looking for suiters for her wretched daughter.”
Whispering, “You better not ever let the Mistress hear you say something like that about her daughter.”
“EEK!!! I would never!!”
“Okay what the hell is all this chit chatting! Get back to work!”
At once all the maids turned about face at Ms. Diana the mansion’s head caretaker.
As if in a choir, at once the maids all yelled “Yes ma’am!”
As Resena walked the miles, she began to feel even more heavy as the bags slowly weighed her down.
“Dear lord, is the cleaners farther than it normally is? I swear it didn’t take this long last time. No, of course that’s not it, these bags are just heavy.”
As Resena continued her walk, she noticed a park bench on the right side. Exhausted from her chores and walking, she decided to sit down for a moment.
“Maybe I should just take a little nap.”
Back at the mansion, Larna Lanster was scanning a tablet filled with the city of Conland’s most eligible bachelors.
“I’m sure I can pick someone to marry off that runt too, I could care less what type of person he is, but I do want to choose someone with connections.”
Across from her sat her husband Delvoy Lanster. Delvoy was the head of Lanster Corp; he inherited the family business from his father as he was the eldest child and only son. Delvoy was tall and handsome, he had brown smooth skin with dark neatly cut hair. His shoulders were broad and stern, and his voice was very soothing, but underneath that sultry stature lied a mean and cruel man. One who was upset that he had been “saddled” with taking care of his niece. On the night Resena arrived he could be heard talking loudly to his wife…
“Does her father not have any family she can be dropped off at? I’m not raising someone else’s brat especially one that has no connections or benefits to me.”
“I don’t want her here either Delvoy! But my sister and her husband had money, most of which I am sure has been left to their brat. We’ll keep her here until we get our hands on it!”
Later the next day, after meeting with the power of attorney over her parents’ estate, Larna and Delvoy learned of the conditions regarding any financial dowry for Resena. After that, Larna decided she would keep Resena until she was old enough to marry off.
“What about this one?”
Delvoy slid over his tablet displaying a 23yr old man name Kelvin Mccoy. He was handsome enough and came from a noble family. His father was the Baron of Mortin and he himself was studying to be a lawyer. His characteristics were often described as “nice” and “demure.” His family was known to be charitable and fair. Marrying Resena off to someone like this would have been ideal. However, Larna loathed the idea of Resena having a “happily ever after.”
“No! I don’t want that runt possibly marrying someone better than my daughter may marry! Pick someone else.”
Although irritated, Delvoy did as his wife asked. In truth, he didn’t care who the girl married as long as he was connected and could further boost Lanster Corp. Lanster Corp specialized in high tech software. Over the years Delvoy managed to triple the company’s profits by expanding the company throughout the entire southern continent, but now he was ready to go overseas. With the money they would soon receive after Resena married and the money and/or connections they would receive from her betrothed, Delvoy was certain he would be able to expand out to the western continent and ultimately the entire globe.
“Larna, just remember that the most important thing is marrying her off to someone that will benefit the company. This isn’t a competition between her and Marsell.”
“I will not have that runt marry BETTER than our daughter!”
Delvoy began to grow tired of his wife and her constant need to compete with her now dead sister. There was a bigger picture that involved the expansion of his company, but Larna could not see past her petty rivalry.
“(Sigh), Larna, we had a daughter, so whoever Marsell marries we will make sure he is groomed and fit to lead and run my company once I retire. So, I have no doubt the person chosen for her will be up to standard. Right now, however, we need to focus on who is going to help the business grow. So, pick someone who can help do that and move on!”
Though she knew her husband was right, Larna secretly seethed. He just didn’t understand! All those years of constantly being compared to her “perfect sister”. Unlike Larna, Lucena was short with a petite hourglass figure. Her skin was a lovely shade of golden brown and she had slight freckles on her face. Her hair was a combination of honey brown and blonde, and it curled at the slightest touch of water. Her eyes were a dark olive green, and her voice was as angelic as a siren. Though she was the youngest, Lucena excelled far more than her older sister in academics as well as athletics earning her the opportunity to graduate grade school and begin college first. Like their parents, Lucena was pure and kindhearted, she often helped others and constantly fought for equality of all dubbing her the “Golden Saint” in their hometown. The citizens would often dote on her while they frowned at Larna.
