Chapter 10
Chapter 10 - Dex pov.
I'm in the middle of a meeting with a potential new client when I get a strange feeling. I try not to pay attention to it, but the feeling that I have to get this appointment done as quickly as possible is getting stronger and stronger.
“Is something wrong Mr. Sutton?” asks the man sitting across from me when I look at my watch for the umpteenth time.
"Alpha, what is it?" Ronan, my Beta, asks through the mind link.
"No, just a little hungry. Didn't have time for lunch yet." I lie, and I say to Ronan "I don't know. I'm suddenly very restless."
"Then let's get this meeting over with. I think I've heard enough." I smile stiffly, hoping I haven't ruined this deal. “I will discuss everything we talked about with my business partners, and when we have made a decision, we will contact you again.” The man says as he puts the papers in his bag. I stand up and hold out my hand. "Thank you for your time, and if you need anything else, don't hesitate to call," I say as I shake his hand. He shakes Ronan's hand and then walks out of my office.
"So, care to explain what is going on?" Ronan asked as I quickly put away the paperwork for this deal. "I don't know. I can’t shake the feeling that I have to get out of here." Ronan looks at me worriedly. "From my office, I mean. Drake feels it too. We have to go somewhere, but we don't know where." I try to explain it to him, even though I don't know what to explain, I don't understand it myself either.
"Do you want me to come with you? Wherever that is." He asks, clearly concerned. "That won't hurt. Who knows why I'm suddenly so restless." I say as I grab my jacket and he nods.
I walk out of my office, no idea where my legs will take me. Without further questions, Ronan follows behind me, curious and concerned about where Drake is leading me. We don't say a word as we walk down the stairs. Like me, he is probably deep in thought, wondering where my sudden restlessness comes from. I don't understand it, I have never experienced this feeling before, I can't put my finger on exactly what it is that I feel inside.
On the way downstairs, I politely nod to passing employees.
"Are you sure there is no danger? You are walking faster and faster." Ronan notes as I skip more and more steps. “I have no fucking idea,” I confess. I stop in the lobby and look around me inquisitively. I slowly walk to the center of the room, Ronan remains at a distance to keep a better eye on the room.
"Mr. Sutton, are you okay? Is there anything I can do for you?" Alana asks in a high-pitched voice from behind her desk when she sees me.
“No thanks, just get back to work,” I answer without looking at her. Alana is one of the humans who works for my company, I can't explain to her that I am suddenly controlled by an overwhelming feeling that has sent me to the company lobby. She would only question the situation more, questions that I am not looking forward to right now. Nor at any other time. I scan the room again, hoping for something that stands out that can explain my feeling.
And then I see her.
I'm rooted to the spot. It's like everything around me disappears and all I can see is her.
I had already given up hope, and kind of accepted that I had to settle with a chosen mate. But now she's sitting there, in my own company.
Who would have thought that? It takes all my strength to hold Drake down and not rush at her like a maniac. Fortunately, Drake also realizes that it will seem strange to the humans currently walking through the lobby. That's a good thing, because I don't think Lucy would appreciate it if I ran into the daycare and attacked one of her employees in front of the young pups.
Fuck! I'll have to tell Lucy too. She will be heartbroken.
"Mate! We need to get to our mate!" Drake growls in my head.
"Yeah yeah, slow down. Lucy's there too." I respond as I prepare to walk towards the entrance of the daycare.
"She'll understand, now go!" He growls impatiently. Shaking my head, I start walking, constantly keeping an eye on my mate. Halfway through I realize something and stop in doubt. I feel Drake growling in annoyance and trying to take control so we can get to our mate.
"Drake stop! That must be Lily!" I try to reason with him.
"So?" I sigh. "Don't you get it? Lucy said she is human." I say. "And has a child from another wolf."
That also makes him hesitate.
Fuck! Why is this happening to me?! I finally meet my mate, and then she is a human with a child.
Lily pov.
I have to admit, I forgot how tiring the work could be. I'm enjoying it, but I'd be lying if I can't wait until Claire is in bed tonight so I can sit with my feet up.
The kids are great, the colleagues are helpful, but man, I long for my bed. And the day isn't even over yet. When I look at the clock I see that the first children won't be picked up for another hour.
"Just a heads up, Dex will be right here," Lucy says when I come back from a little break. "What?" I say in shock.
"Chill, he just wants to say hi, then he's going to an appointment somewhere in town." It gives me some comfort, but not much. How the hell am I supposed to behave towards an Alpha? I have no idea. What if I don't do something according to wolf customs and embarrass myself?
I don't get much time to worry about it, because a few seconds later we hear crying from one of the sleeping quarters. Maybe I can take a long time getting the kid out of bed, so I can avoid Dex today?
Unfortunately, luck is not on my side, because one of the other ladies is already in the room to get the child out of bed.
"Lilly!" Not much later I hear Lucy calling. I take a few deep breaths and, hopefully looking confident, walk to the entrance, where Lucy and, I assume, Dex are waiting for me.
What little self-confidence I had is instantly gone when I see Dex. At least, I'm assuming it's Dex from the way Lucy has her arm around his waist. She looks at me with a beaming smile.
Holy shit, he is mouthwateringly handsome. I force myself to look away from him and give Lucy a small smile. She extends an arm to me. "Lilly, this is Dex, the big boss. Dex, this is Lilly, the one I told you about."
I don't know what to do, reach out my hand, should I bow my head? I smile awkwardly and decide to bow my head, hoping that's the right choice. His gaze stays on me and I look at Lucy, pleading for help.
It is Dex who breaks the silence, his voice sounds surprisingly friendly. "How is your first day? Are you being treated well?" He has a beautiful voice, and although he sounds friendly, he exudes authority.
"Uhm, yes. Everyone is very helpful and friendly. The kids are so sweet. It feels good to be back at work." I answer.
“So you can see yourself working here?” He asks with a nod towards the daycare. "Yeah, I'd love to," I answer a little nervously, hoping he doesn't send me away. “That is, if you want me.”
He gives me the most beautiful smile. "But of course." He answers, "But it's about what Lucy wants. She's the boss of the daycare. I trust her judgment."
Lucy beams with pride. "I told you." She says with a wink and I chuckle. He turns to Lucy. "I have to go, I'll see you tonight." He says to Lucy and kisses her cheek.
"I'll have more time next time." He says apologetically, looking at me a little longer than necessary. I blush when I catch him running his eyes over my body, and I could be imagining it, but there seems to be a pained look in his eyes. Lucy doesn't see it, because she's already getting ready to go back to the children. I must have imagined it, I shake the thoughts from my head and walk back to the daycare with Lucy.
I can't help but look back before we turn the corner, but he's already gone. "See, that wasn't too bad," Lucy notes. I nod smiling. "He's not as bad as he seems. He likes to pretend." She says with a wink and I laugh.
