First Day Jitters
Gray
I’m ready to start my first day as an intern. I hope I don’t run into Mark today because he drains the air out of me in a good way. I live in the house with my dad, but he is rarely home because he has to travel for business. Well, I don’t know if others would call it a house because it’s bigger than an average house. We have a fountain out front and a gated entrance. My dad is in real estate so we can afford anything. I walk down the stairs and head to the kitchen to grab a green apple from the fruit bowl in the middle of the kitchen counter. The kitchen is designed in white and gray and everything is built-in. I walk out towards my car, a black Aston Martin V12 Vantage. Even though the sky is gray, it is quite warm out.
As I pull into the lot at work, I grab my bag and place the apple inside of it. I doubt I’ll be able to eat today because my nerves are too high, but I wanted to have something on me just in case. Today, I am wearing black heels and a black dress that hugs every curve of my body and stops just above my knees, with a black jacket that I left open in the front. I put my bag strap over my shoulder as I closed my car door.
“What a nice car.” I jump, placing a hand on my chest, calming my rapid breathing down from the fright. Mark was beside me in his Armani suit. He is wearing sunglasses, which seem ineffective with the overcast, but the sight of him still takes my breath away.
“Thank you.” I manage to say because it’s like I feel suffocated around him. As I walk towards the building, I can hear my heels clicking.
“Eager to start work?” he asks.
“Yes, I am.” I try to speed up, but it’s no use as he keeps pace with me. I can feel his eyes on me, but I continue to walk, not look at him. We enter the building as employees are walking around, getting ready for the day. “Where is the Web design department?” I ask because that was one thing that I forgot to ask. I finally look at him as we slow down, he looks at me with an amused smile and takes off his sunglasses. Goodness, those green eyes, I could get lost in the forest within them. Once again, my breath is taken away.
“It’s on my floor,” he says with a smile. Gosh, I will probably have to see him every day. He walks further ahead of me and presses a button for the elevator. We stand together as we wait, my eyes fixed on the elevator door. “Can’t believe how much you have grown,” he says.
“I can’t stay young forever,” I say as the elevator doors open, and I walk inside and he follows after me. Once we are both in the elevator, he hits the twentieth-floor button and the elevator ascends.
“I agree, but you are not what I had expected,” he says as he continues to look ahead of him.
“What were you expecting?” I ask softly.
“More like what I was not expecting. You have just grown a lot,” he says, looking at me with an intense stare, and I gasp for air. “I hope that you didn’t have any boyfriends that broke your heart, I hope you don’t have one now either,” he says. I can’t believe he just said that. I open my mouth to say something back, but the elevator picks that moment to open the doors, stopping me. He walks out and I follow after him, a bit irritated with what he just said to me.
“Good morning, Jackie.” he greets the receptionist before he walks through the door. She’s the same receptionist that was in deep conversation with my father yesterday. She has a fair complexion and looks to be around my father’s age. My dad dates on and off, yet his relationships never last. Jackie is pretty, with long brunette hair and blue eyes. She looks up at me as I walk toward her.
“Good morning Gray-Lynn. If you are wondering where the web design department is, it will be around the corner from the kitchen. You can’t miss the huge sign.” she says with a smile.
“Thank you,” I say returning her smile.
“Have a great first day,” she says, and I nod before walking through the door. I walk past the offices, and as I walk past Mark’s office, I can feel the heat from his stare burn into me but I do not look into his office. I continue my trek to the web design department. Rounding the corner past the kitchen, I see my new workplace. Some interns are sitting in cubicles already.
“Hi, you must be Gray-Lynn Spark?” a petite lady, with a file in her hand, asks me.
“Yes, that’s correct,” I say.
“I’m Paulina. I’m in charge of the interns in the Web design department. You may sit in the cubicle next to Sam.” she says, and I nod. I look over at Sam, who raises his hand in the air for me to see him. I walk over to him, sit down in the chair at my cubicle, place my bag in my desk drawer, and power on my computer.
“I’m Sam, as you know.” I look at Sam as he offers me his hand to shake. I notice how attractive he is with his ocean-blue eyes and dark hair that falls over his forehead, as I shake his hand.
“Gray-Lynn. But you can call me Gray or Lynn, whichever you prefer.” I smile with a shrug as I turn back to my computer.
“Such a beautiful name for a beautiful lady,” he says, and I look over at him, he is leaning back in his seat looking at me with a smile on his face. I chuckle.
“Thank you,” I say as I put a lock of my hair behind my ear, heat rising to my cheeks as I blush.
The moment I look up, I am met with serious, angry green eyes. Mark looks at Sam with his jaw clenching and then he moves towards Paulina, who blushes just by having Mark close to her. I can’t help the feeling that he might not like the fact that I spoke to Sam, then what he said to me in the elevator comes back to me. He might not like the fact of me having boyfriends, but he can’t tell me who I can and cannot date. Until yesterday, I hadn’t seen him in years.
