For The Best

Gray

Mark’s meeting wrapped up, he looks at me as he enters his office. I know that he is expecting me to be there already. I hold my serious stare at him, while he keeps glaring at me. I look down at my work, and I place my head in my hand on my desk. I refuse to go inside his office. He doesn’t want me to leave this company, so I will do it anyway. Nothing he says or does will be able to stop me this time.

“Gray,” I hear his voice, I look at him, standing by my desk with an amused smile on his face “My office, please.” My eyes widened, and he said ‘please’, which he never says to me.

“I have work to complete,” I told him.

“This won’t take that long,” he says, his eyes pleading.

“Fine.” I sigh, get up from my seat, and follow him to his office. He stands by his doo,r making sure that I am coming. That damn scent is so delicious. I can feel his eyes burn into me as I walk toward his desk. He closes and locks the door behind us. I look his way, he is walking towards his desk, and I take a seat as he sits down too.

“I still don’t want you to leave.” he says “After the kiss, I tried to push you away, preventing that from happening again. I deliberately said those mean words, but they are a lie. . You are the best assistant that I have ever had.” he looks guilty. “I’m sorry, I hope that you can forgive me for that. I hurt you badly, and it killed me inside when I did it,” he says with sadness in his eyes.

I swallow. “It won’t happen again, because I’m still leaving,” I say. He looks crushed. “I can’t be here,” I say, my voice airy. Just seeing him crushed by my words is suffocating me, I don’t like to hurt people. So I stand up and he joins me too, but then I notice the glass walls of his office are transitioning from clear glass to opaque. Everything is now hidden from both sides of the walls.

Mark walks around his desk towards me, and I lean against his desk, almost sitting on the edge of it. He moves closer to me, keeping his eyes burning into mine as if he wants to devour me. He leans in and sets both of his hands on both sides of me on the desk, he is inches away from me. My lips are parted, and I take in a small breath, not knowing what is going to happen.

“What do you want to do?” he asks me, and I can feel his breath on my lips. I lick my lips and swallow, my mouth feels dry. He crashes his lips against mine, cupping my head in his hand, stealing all my breath from my lungs. When I try to part my mouth for air, he slips his tongue into my mouth. His kissing me is surreal, let alone with this much passion. He pulls away just enough to look at me, still holding me in place, and we both are gasping for air. “Is this what you want?” he asks, his voice gruff, and then his lips are on mine again. I place my hands against his chest. He pulls away, and his thumb moves over my bottom lip. “Is this what you want?” he asks me again, which is barely a whisper.

“I do, but I can’t. I will be so consumed by you that I might get hurt again.” I breathe.

“I told you that I’m sorry, what can I do to make you stay?” he looks straight into my eyes. I get lost in the forest within, admiring nature. “Answer me,” he says softly.

I shake my head, “Nothing.” I say, and he closes his eyes, looking crushed, he leans forward with his forehead against mine, breathing heavily. The phone rings, making me jump as he goes to kiss me again. He places a soft kiss on my forehead, and he takes the phone from his desk behind me, not leaving my side.

“Yes,” he sounds annoyed. “Shit, I will be right there,” he says and he puts the phone down. He looks at me. “I have another meeting, by the time I’m done with it, you will be on your way home already. I will come over tonight,” he says.

“I don’t think that is a good idea,” I say, shaking my head

“Why not?” he looks disappointed. As I open my mouth to speak, there is a knock on the door. “Dammit,” Mark says through gritted teeth as he pulls away from me further. I stand up straight, and he takes a couple of files from his desk.” Tonight,” he says with a serious loo,k and then leaves.

I walk out of his office, and Jackie sees me coming out, giving me a suspicious look. With a non-fraternization policy in place, there will be suspicions, and let’s not forget that Mark’s office, which is normally clear, is currently not. Shit. That makes it worse. I’m glad that I managed to stand my ground, but tonight he is coming over, and I don’t think it’s a good idea. I want to prevent any heartache, especially if my father finds out. I am not prepared for him to find out. The only thing to do is make sure I am not home tonight. I will make plans with Sam to go out somewhere, and not to the club either. I won’t come to work tomorrow either, I quit, even if he didn’t accept the notice.

I have to continue to stand my ground with Mark even though it’s hard and I want him badly, but this is for the best.
