One Day Notice

Gray

After last night with Mark here, I buried myself in web design to take my mind off of everything. Today, I will stay out of his way. The weather is gray again today. I wear a black wrap dress that hits just above my knees and a short black coat, black heels, and loose hair. I sway my hips as I walk confidently. I can’t keep working here and have to appear confident when I give him my notice.

I walk past his office, I know that he is there because I decided to arrive at work at 8 am on the dot. I see that his office door is open. I feel eyes burn into me, I sit down at my desk and power up my computer, still not looking into Mark’s office. I spent all night thinking of what to do, and I decided I would start my own web design business. I have a portfolio of web designs I made for other people before I started here at Sternpoint.

I cannot work here with Mark. It is bad for me. So all I need to do is go to Mark and put in my notice. My heart hasn’t been broken this badly. “Morning.” I look up to see Sam leaning against my desk.

“Hey, sorry that I didn’t arrive at work earlier, I’m not myself today,” I say.

“It’s okay, how is the boss treating you?” he asks randomly, like he is creating a conversation.

“Well, I have decided that I won’t be working here any longer. I’m planning on giving him my one-day notice. I decided to start my own business.”

“Wow, that is impressive. Let me know if you need people to help with your business. I would like to be employed by you. It would make my job less boring.” I can’t help but laugh at him.

“Gray-Lynn, my office now!” Mark called from his office door. I roll my eyes and sigh.

“The boss needs you, please don’t do anything that will put him in an awful mood,” he says as he winks at me and walks away.

I take the document that I typed out last night for my notice and walk into his office, closing the door behind me. He looks at me with concern.

“Are you okay?” he asks me, sitting at his desk in his black Armani suit. I can smell his scent from here, and I stop in front of his desk.

“I’m okay,” I say.

“Sorry again for yesterday, for what I said. I was an ass,” he says.

“Yes, you were, and I thought about it a lot last night after you left,” I say, still holding the document in my hand.

“Gray, I’ve never hurt you before, and seeing how much I hurt you yesterday made me want to take all of my words back. It killed me inside to see you cry because of me,” he says, looking guilty.

“Well, you don’t have to worry about that anymore,” he looked relieved. I place the document gently on his desk. He takes it and then he reads roughly. His brows are furrowed now as if he is about to be angry. “I’m leaving Sternpoint,” I say. He looks at me with a look that could kill him.

“I’m not accepting this.” His tone is harsh, and he puts the document down. “I refuse your notice.”

“Mark, I want to have my own business, and last night put a lot of things into my mind. Especially by being hurt by you. So that is what I want to do.”

“If that is what you want, then I can help you, but you cannot just jump into it, things like this take time,” he says as he gets up from his seat and walks away from his desk.

“I have started college already, so I don’t need anything from you. Plus, I have my dad.” I say. He walks towards me.

“Your dad is traveling, so you have to wait for him to be home to help you, where I am here, and I can help you,” he says, with his eyes burning into me.

I shake my head as he stops in front of me. “I can’t work for you, I have always felt attracted to you. I think that I should leave.” I say.

“You will do no such thing,” he says, leaning in closer to me, his face inches away from mine.

“Yes, I can,” I say, which is barely a whisper. He looks at my lips.

“The things you do to me.” he shakes his head a little. His phone rings. He moves away to answer it while keeping his eyes glued on me, and leans on the edge of his desk.

“Okay, thank you, Jackie, you can send them through,” he says, and he puts the phone down. He stands up with my document, and he tears it in half, again and again, before throwing it into the trash.

“Mark, you can’t do that,” I say I cannot believe that he just did that.

“Oh, I just did,” he laughs to himself. “We are not done here, I have a meeting to attend. When I’m done, I want you to be in my office. We have things to discuss,” he says, as he takes a file from his desk and leaves.

I am glued to the spot, wrapping my brain around what just happened. We will be discussing things. I shake my head and I walk to my desk. If he has feelings for me in return, he can just say it to me. But I want to leave this place. The more I don’t have to see him, the better.
