Chapter 8
Scarlett POV
I was on my way back home from my moms store when I heard the bells ring through the city. I stopped trotting immediately and turned around. I looked up at the pack house. It was built on the highest point in the country and it was so large and magnificent that it could be seen from almost everywhere in the city.
The flag hangs high showcasing our pride as werewolves of the Silvermoon pack.
Today the flag had been lowered as the bells of mourning rang through the city. I gasped and covered my mouth, dropping the basket of confectionery I was holding. Alpha Julius had finally given up the ghost just as I feared. What were we going to do now that he had no heir? Wait to be attacked by rogues? Or maybe Elsa was right, we would have to bring in one from another.
I grabbed my basket and ran back home, my father and sister were already behind the TV and I’m sure everyone else in our pack was doing the same at their various home.
The pack house was in view and important dignitaries were filing in and out to pay respects. Just then, the balcony door opened, beta Warren stepped onto the porch dressed in his warriors uniform, he closed his eyes and bowed slightly,
The headline popped up, “Alpha Jack returns home just in time to pay his respects to the late king.” I gasp,
Has the lost alpha of our pack been found already? What great news? Just in time to save us from doom. I sat down with my eyes glued to the tv. I didn’t want to miss a moment. I wanted to see who the new alpha was, I’ve always wondered what he looked like. He had been missing for a long time and I’m sure almost everyone had given up on finding him, but not me.
I had hoped to find him and see for myself if he was my fated mate. At age 16 almost every she-wolf would find their mate and be bonded with them. In my community almost everyone had found their mate except me. I did not receive my mate at 16. In a few weeks I would turn 18 and I still hadn’t found my mate.
I was beginning to develop the fear that I would be unmated for life though I was still young. Then I had a dream. It was about a lost alpha trying to find his way back home.
That day when I woke up I knew without a doubt that the lost alpha was my mate. I have been searching and hoping that he would be found and look…
I paused and watched intently as he slowly climbed up the balcony with a solemn look on his face, he was in royal robes, and even in mourning he had stern but sparkly eyes.
He had jet back hair with a beautiful facial structure and well defined jawline. He was tall with large hands. I couldn’t see his feet to judge them but the young Alpha was pretty tall and huge for his age. Just like all alphas.
Though he looked a bit intimidating my heart warmed up to him instantly. I watched as he was unveiled to the world and while the rest cheered on happily I watched him carefully.
Even through the TV I could feel it; it was not a mistake. That was my mate.
“I can feel it too. You’re not mistaken.” My wolf purred within me. I was happy that she could feel it too.
Tap, tap. I could feel my sister tagging at my knee, so I stared at her,
“He’s intimidating isn’t he? I think he will be a great king. Even greater than his father.” She said,
Elsa was trying to speak highly of him in front of me as if she was the one who said he was dead. Maybe she thought I would forget our deal by doing so but I won’t forget, I am just waiting for the right time: when I’m queen.
“Isn’t anyone concerned about how he was found? The Alpha has been missing since he was a pup, how is he back just when the king has died from his injuries?” My dad said.
We all stared at him with a questioning look, what was he trying to insinuate? We should be happy that we have an alpha at least.
“Don’t say such things about our new king, he’s too young and looks innocent I can feel within me, he has nothing to do with what happened to the late king.” I admonished him though he was my father.
“I’m just saying that it all sounds and looks suspicious.” He replied.
“Sshh” my sister screeched, we both went mute and looked at the television. It was an interview with beta Warren, the future beta of our future king. He was acknowledging to the interviewer about how important a Luna was to our pack.
“We intend to find the king’s fated mate within these first few days. After we find her, we will hold the coronation ceremony and crown alpha Jack as king.” He stated.
My stomach started rumbling, did they already have a mate for him? I really hoped that the floor was opened to all unmated young she-wolves in the kingdom. I knew it would be hard for him to find me but if we were fated mates like I believed then, we would find each other through the crowd.
“So how does the king intend to find his fated mate?” The interviewer asked.
At this point everything in my body became alert and focused on the TV. I need to know how the king will find his mate, it is important to me.
“This week is a mourning week, but exactly 7 days after this day. We will hold a mating ceremony for all unmated wolves within the ages of 17 and 18 years. If you don’t fall in this category please do not show up, this ceremony is not just about the king but also to help unmated wolves find their mates. The new king is generous.” Beta Warren stated with a smile.
I smiled as my wolf purred with excitement, everyone who was unmated was going to be there, this was my chance to find out for myself if what I had seen in my dreams were real.
“Hello, my soon to be servant.” I bared my fangs at Elsa, who gasped in horror when she remembered our deal.
