Riding to the slaughter house

Chapter 3

Ruby's POV

I pushed the black double doors open, just to be greeted by the number of eyes from people already seated inside.

The large majority of them looked to be either sick or malnourished, as they sat there all in matching black gowns, their faces pale and their eyes sunken.

"Welcome, go change up there." Another vampire woman walked up to me and pushed a pair of black clothes into my hand, her long fingers brushing against mine.

With a firm nod, I grabbed it and headed for the door pointed to me. I slammed the door shut behind me and took a deep breath to calm my nerves.

I made quick work getting into the black, loose-fitting hospital gown, and dumped my clothes in the trash can as indicated there, before walking out back into the waiting room and sitting down quietly like the rest.

I sat quietly, awaiting my turn as other numbers kept being called, and I must have yawned a couple of times as I was getting tired, my eyelids drooping slightly.

"Fifteen? Fifteen?" I heard a voice call out, far away in my subconscious, and I snapped my eyes open, my heart racing slightly.

"Here, fifteen!" I responded hastily, as I rushed to my feet and walked up to the woman calling the names, who took my ticket and ushered me into what looked like a clinic.

"While you wait for the doctor, fill this up." The vampire woman said, as she handed over a form to me, her red eyes watching me from under the brim of her glasses with a look of curiosity.

The information needed were mainly just basic, my name, age, body description, and blood type, and I made quick work in scribbling down in hast to fill up the blank lines.

My mouth dropped open in shock as I turned the form over and was met with a price catalog, the figures popping before my eyes.

"Regular blood donor: ten million dollars for ten years?" I gasped in shock, my voice barely leavinv my lips in shock.

I had never known that the price for this was that high, and the more I kept reading, the more shocked I was.

"Virgin donor: fifty million dollars." I said slowly, my mind reeling as I kept reading further, my eyes dancing through the long strings of zeros, at this point I just said a quick prayer to be picked, at least after bringing my father's killer down, I could have some money to my name and then retire to an island far away.

Just then, the doctor walked in, without saying a word, and just went on to roughly draw out my blood into a large syringe, the needle piercing my skin with a sharp sting, and I had to pull hard at my hair to stop from crying out in pain.

I watched as the door slammed shut behind the doctor, not even a care if I was fine after taking such amount of blood from me, making me roll my eyes while I kept on pressing down on where he had pierced, trying to stop the flow of blood.

I was left there for what felt like thirty minutes, the silence only broken by the soft hum of the medical equipment in the room.

Then, the door was pushed open, and in walked another vampire, this one dressed in a crisp, tailored suit with his hair packed neatly behind him.

"Miss Ruby, here is your contract, you can look it over," he said softly, with a warm and inviting smile.

I moved forward to take the paper envelope from him and pulled out the file inside, my fingers tracing the logo of a red leaf on the paper.

"Hundred million dollars!" I gasped in shock, my eyes flying wide open in utter amazement as I stared at the figure on the contract.

"Yes, you have a very high percentage of Scarlet blood that is well sought after," the vampire explained, still smiling calmly, while I was over here losing my mind with excitement and a hint of fear.

But I decided to calm down and read through the contract carefully before signing, my eyes scanning each line even as my heart threatened to hop out of my chest.

Apparently, my virginity had also helped to boost my value. After reading the contract a couple of times and finding nothing wrong with it, I signed on all the papers

"You can keep this, your owner would be here for you soon," he said, as he pushed a pile of papers into my hand and walked out, leaving me feeling uncertainty about what I was about getting myself into.

My eyebrows tingled as I watched the vampire leave and it seemed the vampire was even happier than I was about the contract signing, the smile in his eyes still playing in my mind.

The door was pushed open and this time a man and a woman walked in, they were both obviously vampires.

“Uugh hello?” I called out to them both as they just stood there watching me, and from the look of things they were not doctors of any such.

“I'm placing my bet on you try not to die.” The man finally spoke as he crossed his hands in front of him leaving me speachless.

“She wouldn't, look at that spark in her eyes, just have in mind dear Red head, this isn't some kind of vacation, there is a reason why all blood donors die before the fifth year hence the money promised to you guys is a sham, please survive.” The female said softly as the male pulled her out of the room.

The door slammed shut behind them leaving me even more scared than the last second had been.

The door pushed open again, and in walked a young man, who stood tall with a handsome face and brown hair framing the sides of his head.

"Ruby?" he asked, scratching at his head, and I couldn't help but notice that he was human, his brown eyes were warm and friendly.

"Yes?" I answered, pushing down from the bed and walking towards him, my heart beating slightly faster.

"Let's go. I would take you to your owner," he said, and I forced a smile to my lips, not liking the way he stressed the word "owner," a sense of unease creeping into my chest.

Together, we walked out of the company, and I raised an eyebrow as the door was pulled open for me, the bright sunlight momentarily blinding me.

I hopped into the car that seemed to scream all luxury, the plush leather pressing against me in comfort.

Somehow, fear began to settle in the bottom of my belly, and I didn't know why it all felt like I was being led to the slaughter like a chicken that would be pampered well, days to its death.

Suddenly, the plush leather felt like wood on my back as I turned to gaze out the tinted windows, watching the cityscape blur by as the car sped forward. I was stepping into a whole new world.
