Vampria Corp

Chapter 2

Ruby's POV

I walked up the stairs of my apartment one at a time, my legs feeling like there were heavy bags of stones tied to them, weighing me down with each step, and my eyes felt hot, burning with unshed tears.

I pushed the door to my apartment open and was just about to walk over the carpet when my eyes were drawn to a black envelope that sat on the carpet, its presence seeming out of place in the dimly lit room.

“Ha ha…” I laughed out into the empty room, the sound echoing off the walls, as I bent down and picked the envelope up, and then slammed my door shut behind me, the loud thud echoing through the hallway, as I moved to tear the envelope open.

I was met with a series of pictures and a small device and somehow I already knew what it was about, having seen the scull mark on the side of the envelope.

I walked into my computer room and started up my computer before plugging in the device.

The computer immediately lit up with a space for a password, which I immediately filled in, my fingers moving with a practiced ease.

The screen popped up with a video of a man I knew all too well, Dominic, the Mafia Boss of City Z, one who I had worked with after leaving the International Bureau, his face a mask of calm calculation.

“Agent Rubina, I express my condolences for your loss. But I have come with evidence on who is behind the death of your father. It's the Mysterious Mafia Boss of City A, shocking right? Evidence gathered says your father held intel he needed and refused to yield, hence he sent him crashing down the cliff. You might ask why I am doing this? Well, now we both have a common enemy.” His speech ended, and the computer went off, plunging the room into silence.

With swollen, red eyes, I spread out the papers in front of me that showed the crash, the images seemed to blur into my mind, and then there were pictures of a mysterious man who stood tall and proud with a cigarette dangling between his lips and his face covered in a black mask.

By the side of his neck was a snaking tattoo that moved up the length of his neck and to the back of his ear, the image making my heart hurt. This was his signature look, the Mafia Boss of City A, whose face was known to none, with just the tattoo being his signature.

“It’s him, fucking bastard!” I screamed out in pain, my voice raw with emotion, as I leaned back in my chair, my hands ruffling my hair in frustration.

“Something seems wrong…” I muttered, my voice barely above a whisper, as I paused in my tracks, my mind racing with doubts.

My hands moved swiftly and swept off all the things on my table, the sound of papers and objects hitting the floor filled the room as I started my computer up again.

The room fell silent once more, the only sound the hum of the computer as I waited for it to boot up the website my heart pounding in my chest.

My fingers danced over my computer keyboard as I hacked the CCTV system of the street where the incident had occurred, rewinding the footage to the time of the incident.

The images flickered on the screen, revealing the events leading up to the tragedy.

My fingers paused as I watched the black and white image of my dad get out of his car and walk towards the black truck that was parked at the other end of the road, its dark silhouette looming ominously.

A conversation occurred, which seemed to end in a heated disagreement, and my dad walked back to his car and moved to drive away.

I watched in slow motion as the devil himself gave a sharp signal with his cigarette, and in the next minute, a car flew out from nowhere and knocked hard into my dad's car, sending it tumbling off the hill.

As my eyes scanned the room, they landed on a small, black leaflet on the wall. It was an advertisement for Vampria Corp.

"Come to think of it, Vampires are known for being the fastest and strongest," I muttered to myself, my eyes hardening as a plan began forming in my head.

"If I can have one on my side, taking down those Mafia bastards should be a breeze." Without another thought, I grabbed my backpack and walked out of my room, the soft slam of the door echoing behind me.

I pulled my jacket tighter around my body, shielding myself from the harsh winter wind that howled through the streets.

The short walk to the closest branch of Vampria Corp seemed to stretch on forever.

I stood before the tall, imposing building, its black walls seeming to blend calmly into the dark environment.

The surrounding buildings looked dull in comparison, I could feel the stab of curious gazes on me, humans lingering around the building staring and pointing.

The murmurs began to increase, but I stepped into the building without looking back, the automatic doors sliding shut behind me with a soft hiss.

Vampria Corp had emerged about twenty years ago, and humans had only recently discovered that vampires were the ones running the show. The humans haven't quiet accepted the idea of a different being in their mist.

I walked forward, my hands tucked deep into my pockets. The receptionist's desk stood a small distance before me, and I approached it with a slight hesitation. I just hoped I was not about to make the biggest mistake of my life.

For some reason, the inside of this building seemed even colder than the outside, "I want to pawn in my blood," I said firmly, my voice steady.

The receptionist, a perfectly beautiful woman with porcelain skin, smiled at me, her sparkling red eyes gleaming in the dim light. Her fangs peeked out from beneath her lips, amd I was a bit taken aback, but I was quick in fixing the shocked look on my face.

"You will be number fifteen," she said, her voice husky and smooth.

"Walk into that door there and wait your turn." She pushed a small ticket into my hand, and I took it.

I glanced at the ticket and walked over to the door she had pointed out, a cold sweat seemed to break down my back as I felt eyes watching my every move but no matter how I scanned the area there was no one in sight. This just had had my heart racing even more. I knew I was being watched.
