I'm i useless?
Hillary's POV
I politely placed both of my hands behind my back. I was fucking nervous. He just trailed in looking as amazing as ever.
How dare you Travis? How dare you look like a god.
Worst of all, he was just in a tank top and a loose pair of dark pants.
That fluttering feeling in my chest. I shut my eyes tight and squeezed at my chest.
“ Are you okay?” He asked and I opened my eyes. He chuckled. If he doesn't stop mesmerizing me, I'm going to faint.
I cleared my throat. “ Hello. Tra..” I stopped. “ Um, Sir? Sir Travis.”
Eww. Awkward.
He rolled his eyes. “Oh come on. Don't say that. Travis is perfect. You are no stranger, Hillary.”
“But today is my first day at work. I mean. If I'm supposed to work here, then our relationship is blatantly formal.”
“Jeez.” He roughed his hair. “ You are my assistant okay? Call me whatever.”
“Okay.” I shrugged and he walked to a lounge to lay on it.
“Really? What I'm I supposed to do next? Watch you sleep?”
He chewed on something and it was a bunch of grapes on a plate. “ Firstly. I'm going to change your outfit.”
“What? Why? What's wrong with this.”
He nods his head. “ Not bad……but not impressive at all.”
I sighed. “When do we start work? How is it done here? Do all the workers gather here?”
“Hell no. This is just my private room. Relax.” He walked closer and his cologne hit my nose. Imagine what it would feel like hugging him. Oh my.
He gestured to his closet which revealed a collection of designer clothes.
“So this is where your girlfriend's clothes are?” I questioned, jumping into conclusion and he pulled out a piece from a hanger.
“Girlfriend? Which is?”
“You ask me? How should I know? Having female clothes says it all.” I scoffed and he handed it over to me.
“ I just got the collection this morning for you.” He stated and my eyes twitched.
“What?”
“Yeah. Because I want you to look impressive.”
“Fair enough.” I pursed my lips.
“What? Do you have an issue with me having a girlfriend? He asked and I decided to dodge his question.
“Excuse me. I need to change.”
“Okay.”
He shrugged and leaned against the wall staring at me. I laughed.
“You know what privacy is called right?”
“I'm just going to turn my back. I won't look at you.” He turned adjacent and I cursed him silently.
“Asshole.”
With the power of flash in me, I was done within a second.
“You can take a look.” I announced and he turned.
“You look like an old woman.” He deadpan gestured to look at myself in the mirror.
“What?” My voice came out as a whisper.
“I'm kidding.” He placed his hands on my shoulders and I came into full reflection of myself.
“You do look hot.”
I froze because of his words. Did Travis Lancaster just call me hot? My eyes were fixed on the mirror and the blouse was a classic one. It was an elbow bishop sleeves and penciled plaid skirt with a mature low heeled pump that would definitely feed me for months.
My hair fell to my shoulders and smiled at my beautiful self.
“ Let's go, shall we?” He says walking out and puts on his sleeves, accompanying it with his dark suit and cufflinks.
No way. More hotter. I swallowed. He led me out and my bag was clutched in my arms. The elevator closed down on us and upon our arrival, back to the main office.
“Listen, I'll let my ex assistant show you around. Get you familiarized with office work and stuff.”
I nod. “Okay.”
A group of ….workers, I must say troops in.
“Good morning sir.” They all bow to him and I couldn't help but feel surprised.
A lady ran briskly towards him. “Sir, It's time for the meeting.” Her voice came out in loud breaths.
“Good.” His expression was as serious as ever.
“Hillary, this is Rachel..Rachel please help her out with work related stuff. She's my assistant.”
“O..Kay sir.” Rachel nods.
While we were still standing at the stairs, some men walked in. All In suits. They're faces were so intimidating and that was how he disappeared into sight.
Rachel turned to leave and I had no idea but to follow her behind.
“And you are?” she stopped.
“Huh?” I bumped into her unintentionally and moved away. “I'm so sorry.”
She rolls her eyes. “Hey, you heard me right?”
“Sorry.. I'm Hillary.” I rubbed my hands on my skirt. “ Hillary Highman.”
“I remember you.” She clicks her tongue..I just couldn't understand why she had that irascible look on her face. A while ago, she was like a scared cat while Travis talked to her.
“You ran away on the day of your interview.”
I remained silent. Playing with my fingers.
“I wonder why my replacement is you.” She says to herself. Excuse me? I can hear you loud and clear.
“Can we start already?” I asked.
“Look, don't get too comfortable, okay?” She flips her hair. “ You might not last a week here if you don't know what you're doing. You seem nervous and easy to break.”
She shrugs and I continue walking with her. “ I suppose that wasn't what Travis asked you to do.” I looked away, still polite.
“Did you just call him Travis?” She turns to me. There was a look of disbelief on her face and I covered my mouth.
“I'm sorry. Sir Travis.”
I corrected myself. Yes I knew Travis and I were informal but that doesn't give any room for friendship. I'm nothing but his assistant.
“ This is your first day and you're already feeling like you own the building or something.”
I sighed. “ I apologized.”
“Do you know him?”
“No.” I lied.
“Then get your shit together.”
She catwalks out of the arena. Oooh. Bossy. Tough girl. I grimaced at her Bitchy attitude. I did follow her and she introduced me to the staff and all necessary information was told.
We went to the top floor again and the space was really beautiful and massive. It was a workstation with different people.
“This is your new office and that over there is your station.” She gestured and I smiled. A desk in an open area plan with other teams and a computer.
“I've told you everything you need to know. The rest is up to you.”
That was the last thing she said before vacating to meet other colleagues. Some stared at me and I was confused. She didn't tell me much. What exactly was I supposed to do? I was just a newbie.
I sat down. Didn't know how to feel actually. Happy or sad? One Thing I know, my social anxiety would never. Rachel approaches me.
“Sir Travis is expecting you to bring the presentation to the meeting. It's a crucial part of the discussion. Just take this USB drive and plug it into the projector. He'll take care of the rest."
I took it nervously.
“It's fine. Just go. That's the usual routine. You're the new assistant. You can walk into the meeting as it suits you.”
“Okay.” I nod. I was nervous and kept on taking deep breaths. This was it. I stood across the door and after seconds of contemplating, I finally opened the door. My eyes landed on the board members around and Travis at the top.
I didn't bother to look at his face and I was confused as hell expecting Travis to do something.
“My assistant will display the presentation now.”
He stated and I walked towards the projector to plug the USB. I successfully did and anticipated. Suddenly, a cartoon started playing. I mean kids cartoons.
I was as surprised as the members who had now started to whisper and complain.
“Hillary, what's this?” He Demands. Strict and cold. Every ounce of informality was totally destroyed. This wasn't the regular Travis.
I stared back at the display and was confused. I only followed orders.
“Mr Lancaster. I thought you had potentials
Is this a joke?”
The man's voice was Stern. “What kind of assistant is this? I'm highly disappointed. I don't think my team would work with you anymore.”
There followed a cry of widespread criticism. Oh my gosh. I fucked up. I stare at the floor so embarrassed of myself.
“I'm sorry Mr Frank.” Travis stood up and walked towards the door signaling me to come along which I did. The doors were closed behind us.
“I only….”
“... Just shut the fuck up, will you?”
His first speech was rude. I felt a wave of fear wash over me. Travis was mad. Really.
“Did you know how much you fucked up.!” He was furious. Eye to Eye.
“I just lost a fucking important meeting because of you. You ruin everything and don't you know how to think?! This is useless!”
Useless….
My body betrayed me when hot tears ran from my left eyes.
