In piedi nel corridoio scarsamente illuminato, Jenna sentiva il cuore battere forte nel petto mentre restava ferma vicino alla porta, con l'orecchio premuto contro i pannelli di legno lucido.

"Urrrrrrrrrgh!" sentì gemere il suo fratellastro. Era un gemito lungo, prolungato ed esasperato. Lo seguì con un verso infastidito prima di continuare.

"Non è già abbastanza che lei sia qui per cominciare. Ora mi stai dicendo che devo essere gentile con lei? Prendermi cura di lei come se fosse un agnellino smarrito?"

Quelle parole le sembrarono una pugnalata al petto. Cosa aveva fatto esattamente per farlo arrabbiare così tanto? A parte esistere...

"Non ti chiedo... Ti sto solo chiedendo di per favore prenderti cura di lei nel suo primo giorno in una nuova scuola," esortò Harry. Il suo tono era supplichevole ma lamentoso, come se stesse perdendo la pazienza con suo figlio. "Puoi farlo? Non ti sto chiedendo di diventare il suo nuovo migliore amico. Solo... non rendere le cose più difficili per lei. I primi giorni in una nuova scuola non sono facili, e lei non ha nessuno che la aiuti ad ambientarsi tranne te. Dobbiamo prenderci cura di lei finché sua madre non torna dalla Francia."

Kai emise un grugnito non impegnativo prima di cadere nel silenzio. Jenna non sentì i suoi passi avvicinarsi e quasi ebbe un infarto quando lui tirò via la porta dal suo viso. Per qualcuno alto e ben costruito come Kai, non era affatto pesante sui piedi. Più simile a un ninja che a un semplice mortale.

I suoi occhi azzurro-verdi scintillavano di rabbia mentre emetteva un altro verso infastidito. "Stai spiando me? È meglio che non mi metti in imbarazzo comportandoti come una completa pazza a scuola. Se lo fai, ti disconosco e farò in modo che tutti lì sappiano che sei una completa pazza anche tu."

Mentre la superava e scompariva su per le scale, Harry scrollò le spalle e le diede uno di quegli sguardi che chiedevano, "Cosa posso fare?"

'Potresti dire al tuo figlio viziato di smetterla di trattarmi come una schifezza,' pensò ma non osò dire. Harry non era così male, ed era stato buono con sua madre. Se non fosse stato per lui, sarebbero stati costretti a tornare a vivere con i suoi nonni che vivevano in un piccolo villaggio sul mare, e nessuno voleva quello, specialmente i suoi nonni.

"Penso che andrò a letto. Grande giorno domani," disse e alzò gli occhi al cielo.

"Ce la farai," la rassicurò Harry, ma i suoi occhi erano pieni di dubbio. "Non è mai così male come pensi che sarà."

'Sa che passerò un brutto momento,' pensò. 'Lo capisco da quel tono triste nella sua voce.'

I due si dissero buonanotte e Jenna se ne andò, dirigendosi verso la sua nuova camera da letto. Una figura nel corridoio buio la fece fermare. Kai. Stava aspettando lei?

Cercò di aggirarlo, ma lui le bloccò la strada.

"Cosa vuoi adesso?" chiese, senza nascondere la tristezza e il risentimento nella sua voce.

"Guarda il tono quando mi parli," ringhiò, aggrottando la fronte. Con i capelli biondo platino, gli occhi azzurri penetranti e una mascella forte, poteva essere davvero bello... se non fosse per il fatto che aggrottava la fronte così spesso. Ma Jenna non lo sapeva—non l'aveva ancora visto con nessun'altra espressione facciale oltre a un odio sottilmente dissimulato.

Inclinò la testa e si avvicinò di più, aprendo la bocca per lo shock.

"Ha—hai appena alzato gli occhi al cielo con me?" sussurrò, arricciando il labbro superiore con incredulità.

Jenna aprì la bocca per protestare—non aveva davvero intenzione di alzare gli occhi al cielo—ma non uscì alcun suono quando cercò di spiegarsi all'uomo arrabbiato di fronte a lei.

Senza preavviso, lui la sollevò da terra e la spinse attraverso la porta della sua camera con un movimento rapido e senza sforzo.

"Ahh," emise un piccolo grido mentre lui la teneva sollevata.

"Devi imparare a stare al tuo posto—" iniziò lui.

"Non l'ho fatto!" Jenna gridò in protesta. Cercò di liberarsi dalla presa che lui aveva sui suoi vestiti, ma era troppo forte. "Giuro che non volevo, cioè, io—"

"E ora mi interrompi anche." Lui fece un suono di disapprovazione, sospirò e scosse la testa. "Mio padre continua a insistere che usi la mia popolarità a scuola per aiutarti. Ma potrei fare esattamente il contrario. Te ne rendi conto, vero? Posso renderti la vita un inferno in quel posto. È già una scuola di merda rispetto al tuo ultimo posto fighetto."

'Fallo!' pensò Jenna, ma non osò dirlo. Mancavano solo due trimestri all'ultimo anno. Dopo di ciò, sarebbe stata libera di andare al college ovunque volesse. Il più lontano possibile da questo stronzo.

Quando alzò lo sguardo, fissando i suoi occhi azzurri e freddi, Jenna non vide altro che crudeltà calcolatrice. Il suo sguardo la gelò fino alle ossa, sciogliendo la sua audacia. Non voleva farsi un nemico di lui e non riusciva a capire cosa avesse fatto per renderlo così aggressivo verso di lei.

'Perché mi odi così tanto?' si chiese. 'Sono stata solo gentile con te.'

"Mi dispiace," sussurrò. Sicuramente era quello che voleva sentire, giusto? O forse voleva che litigasse così poteva spingerla ancora un po'.

Kai lasciò la presa sulla sua maglietta e la spinse all'indietro. Fortunatamente, il letto era dietro di lei a fermare la sua caduta.

"Aww, è meglio che tu vada a dormire, piccolo agnello smarrito," disse con falsa simpatia. "Domani sarà una lunga giornata per te. Te lo posso promettere almeno questo."

Jenna non disse nulla. Non stava per implorare la sua carità. Se voleva renderle la vita un inferno... beh, poteva provarci. Non è che la sua vita potesse peggiorare.

Dopo che suo padre era stato arrestato per appropriazione indebita, la maggior parte dei suoi cosiddetti amici nella scuola "fighetta", come la chiamava Kai, le aveva voltato le spalle. Senza il reddito del mantenimento da parte del padre, sua madre era stata costretta a prendere un lavoro che la teneva all'estero per mesi interi e per di più, il suo ragazzo l'aveva lasciata il giorno in cui si era trasferita.

"Non ho un ragazzo, zero amici e un fratellastro che mi odia," mormorò Jenna a se stessa dopo che Kai l'aveva lasciata sola. Le lacrime le salirono agli occhi e, per quanto cercasse di reprimerle, scesero, lasciando una serie di piccole macchie scure sulle sue belle lenzuola nuove.

Si asciugò le guance, preoccupata che Kai potesse tornare e vederla piangere. Non voleva dargli la soddisfazione di vedere quanto fosse sconvolta. A dire il vero, non era lui la principale causa della sua tristezza, solo la ciliegina sulla torta di orrori che era la sua vita in quel momento.

'Idiota debole,' si rimproverò, desiderando di essere il tipo di ragazza che poteva difendersi invece di sgretolarsi come una pasta vecchia di una settimana.

Prima di dormire, un ultimo controllo del telefono rivelò un messaggio di sua madre. Nessuno dei suoi vecchi amici si preoccupava più di mandarle messaggi.

"Come va tutto? I ragazzi si prendono cura di te?" diceva.

"Tutto va alla grande," rispose, trattenendo le lacrime. Una completa bugia.

"In bocca al lupo per la scuola domani!" le scrisse sua madre.

Lasciò cadere il telefono sul letto e si lasciò andare.

"Sì," Jenna sussurrò a se stessa, stringendo le labbra. "Penso che ne avrò bisogno."
