Chapter 1

El enorme letrero con el nombre del casino brillaba en lo más alto del edificio. Paul miró el rótulo y dudó en entrar. Era la primera vez que tenía miedo de hacerlo. Había acumulado una deuda muy elevada con el Casino Spencer-Imperial, y era muy probable que no volvieran a dejarle jugar. Sin embargo, era una necesidad que quemaba dentro de él, había estado los últimos tres días luchando para no sucumbir ante su adicción.

Sí, Paul sabía que era un adicto al juego y como cualquier otro tipo de adicciones le era imposible de controlar. Había perdido la fortuna que heredó de sus padres y lo hizo en menos de seis meses. Había vendido las acciones, había hipotecado su casa, perdido el auto… había terminado con todo.

Con frustración, Paul se mesó el cabello, su garganta estaba seca y pasar un poco de saliva fue una agonía. No debía estar allí, no tenía nada más que cincuenta dólares en el bolsillo; sin embargo, la necesidad que sentía por el juego era más de lo que podía soportar.

—Debería marcharse, señor Summers, no creo que al jefe le haga mucha gracia verlo de nuevo —le dijo el guardia de seguridad, quien ya lo conocía muy bien.

—¿Me ha prohibido la entrada? —preguntó, aunque era una posibilidad, él se atrevió a ponerlo en duda.

—No, el señor Ferreira no ha mencionado nada sobre dejarlo o no entrar, pero dio órdenes de que no se le volviera a dar crédito. Ya no tiene con qué pagar —musitó el guardia como si le contara un secreto.

Paul tragó el nudo formado en su garganta. Si fuera un hombre sensato, habría tomado el consejo del hombre y se hubiese marchado de allí, pero no lo era.  La necesidad de apostar era superior a cualquier otra cosa.

—Quizá hoy tenga suerte —musitó.

El hombre de seguridad negó.

—Es lo que ha dicho los últimos dos meses, señor Summers… —se atrevió a decir, consciente de que no debía inmiscuirse en los asuntos de otras personas, menos en la vida de los clientes del casino, pero le daba pena ver a un hombre tan joven perderse en el vicio del juego.

Ese muchacho le recordaba a su propio hijo, quien había perdido la vida a causa del vicio en los juegos de azar.

—Por favor…

Paul no le permitió continuar, levantó una mano para hacerlo callar.

—Esta vez, voy a ganar, señor Ramírez, y cuando lo haga, le daré una jugosa propina por sus consejos —respondió con una sonrisa en los labios.

El hombre solo negó y suspiró al verlo perderse en el interior del casino, sabía que aquella noche no sería diferente de las anteriores; sin embargo, el guardia desconocía hasta qué punto sería diferente…

Patrick levantó la mirada cuando la puerta de su oficina se abrió, dejó la pluma sobre el documento que revisaba y entrelazó los dedos…

—Lamento interrumpirte, Patrick, pero… me dijiste que te avisara tan pronto como Paul Summers cruzara las puertas del casino —mencionó Harrison, desde el umbral de la puerta.

Patrick elevó una ceja, dejando ver sus ojos verdes, herencia de su madre.

—¿Se atrevió a volver? —preguntó.

Harrison asintió.

—Es un idiota —vociferó con molestia.

—Di órdenes que no se le volviera a dar crédito, sin embargo, dudo mucho que eso lo detenga. Hará lo que tenga que hacer para colarse entre las mesas de juego —respondió Harrison.

Patrick estiró sus largas piernas y corrió la silla, se puso de pie y haló las puntas de su saco.

—Tendré que echarlo personalmente, no me gusta la gente como Paul —espetó, mirando a Harrison, como si su amigo tuviese la culpa de la adicción de Paul Summers.

—No creo que un enfrentamiento entre ustedes sea bueno, Pat —dijo, llamándolo como solo sus amigos tenían permitido hacerlo.

—Paul es una mala, muy mala publicidad para el Casino, termina borracho, sin un centavo y armando escándalos a diestra y siniestra.

—Quizá sea porque perdió a sus padres hace poco…

Patrick atravesó la puerta, haciendo que su mejor amigo se hiciera a un lado.

—Nada justifica su comportamiento, Paul no es la única persona que ha perdido a alguien importante en su vida —mencionó.

Patrick aún estaba dolido por la muerte de su abuela Carlota. Sin embargo, para él honrar la memoria de su abuela, era siendo un hombre recto, con una reputación intachable, del que solo se pudiera decir cosas buenas, pero Paul no ayudaba…

—¡Espera, Patrick! ¡Espera! ¿Qué es lo que harás? —preguntó Harrison, tomándolo del brazo.

Patrick se detuvo y se giró para mirar a su amigo.

—Ya te lo dije, voy a echarlo de aquí.

—Hará un escándalo si lo haces, no creo que tu madre esté muy feliz si eso llega a suceder —le recordó.

Patrick pensó en la rubia de ojos verdes que lo esperaba en casa, estaba seguro de que iba a darle un gran disgusto si los hoteles y el casino tenían mala publicidad.

—Véncelo en la mesa de juego, creo que de esa manera no le quedarán ganas de volver.

—¿Quieres que me siente y apueste con Summers?

—No ganará —aseguró Harrison.

Patrick sonrió y negó.

—Los juegos de azar son impredecibles, Harrison, puede que le dé una oportunidad a Paul y sea yo quien termine perdiendo.

Harrison palmeó el hombro de Patrick.

—Nunca te he visto perder, querido amigo.

—Siempre habrá una primera vez —refutó Patrick, avanzando dos pasos para dirigirse al ascensor.

Harrison prefirió no insistir y caminó a su lado en completo silencio. El ascensor descendió hasta el área del casino, un servicio adicional del hotel Spencer-Imperial. Algo que él había implementado luego de discutir con sus padres; pero finalmente, se había salido con la suya, no sin tener que prometer no caer en el vicio de las apuestas…

Lo primero que Patrick miró al bajar, fue a Paul, el hombre tenía unos veinticinco años, no le calculaba menos, tal vez uno o dos años más. Estaba jugado en la mesa de Ray, uno de los pocos hombres a lo que Patrick odiaba. El ex de su novia…

—Señores —dijo al acercarse a la mesa. Patrick cerró la mano en puño de acero, Paul tenía dinero suficiente como para entretenerse por unas cuantas horas…

—¡Patrick! —exclamó Ray, parecía complacido de verlo—. ¿Qué milagro hizo que te dignaras a bajar al inframundo? —le preguntó con malicia en la voz.

Patrick presionó su mandíbula con fuerza.

—No suelo venir por nada, ni por nadie; pero hoy estoy haciendo una excepción. El señor Summers no puede estar aquí.

—¿Por qué? —cuestionó Ray, retando a Patrick con la mirada.

—Su deuda no se lo permite —espetó sin darle mayor explicación a Ray.

El hombre sonrió.

—Si es la deuda un problema, puedo hacerme cargo de ella —aseguró.

Patrick sonrió en respuesta, sus ojos relampaguearon.

—¿Estás dispuesto a pagar medio millón de dólares únicamente por llevarme la contraria? ¿Sientes necesidad de demostrar algo, Ray? —le cuestionó Patrick sin borrar su sonrisa.

Ray tragó, miró a Paul con cierto reproche. Él no le había mencionado que su deuda era tan grande. Tenía el dinero, pero ni loco se gastaría medio millón en un tipo que no conocía solo por fastidiar a Patrick. No era estúpido.

—Te concedo mi lugar —dijo, poniéndose de pie. Échalo de aquí si quieres, pero antes tienes que ganar. Si lo haces, pagaré ese medio millón —aseguró.

Ray estaba convencido de que Patrick no era un jugador, era el dueño, pero jamás lo había visto sentarse en una mesa de juego y eso que lo conocía desde hacía un buen tiempo.

—No tengo ninguna necesidad, de hacerlo.

—¿Tienes miedo, Ferreira? —lo retó con malicia—. ¿Tienes miedo de perder?

Patrick apretó los dientes, la mandíbula se le marcó y sus ojos brillaron con enojo.

—Apártate —gruño.

Harrison intentó detenerlo; sin embargo, no llegó a pronunciar ni media palabra, la mirada fría y furiosa de Patrick le hizo guardar silencio.

—Qué empiece el juego —se rio Ray, seguro de que iba a disfrutar la derrota de Patrick.

El juego dio inicio y Paul vio su oportunidad de ganar, no lo había hecho antes, pero estaba seguro de que Patrick no tenía ningún conocimiento en el juego, así que, apostó todo a una sola jugada.

Patrick vio la acción de Paul, como una medida desesperada. Apostarlo todo solo iba a precipitar las cosas, lo sabía.

—No hay razones para que insistas, Paul, es mejor que te vayas a casa —le sugirió Patrick, con intención de terminar la jugada.

—Voy a ganar y tú vas a perdonarme la deuda y, además, me permitirás la entrada —refutó el muchacho con determinación.

Patrick resopló.

—Renuncia, Paul —insistió.

—Estoy tan seguro de que ganaré —susurró.

—Ya no tienes nada que apostar, muchacho, vete a casa, ahora —insistió Patrick con voz cortante y fría.

—Te apostaré a mi hermana —respondió Paul sin más.

Harrison vio a Patrick, esperando que rechazara tan descabellada apuesta.

—¿Qué? —preguntó Patrick, desconcertado.

—Voy a apostarte a mi hermana, no perderé, te lo aseguro —insistió.

Patrick sintió unos deseos inmensos de asesinarlo allí mismo, sobre todo, porque Ray estaba muy pendiente del juego. El muy desgraciado parecía estar disfrutando la situación.

—Muestra tus cartas —pidió Patrick, aceptando la apuesta. Si Paul se atrevía a tanto, era porque estaba seguro de que iba a ganar, de lo contrario, solo era un idiota, dispuesto a todo por seguir con el juego.

—Vamos, muestra tu jugada —apoyó Ray, con impaciencia.

Paul asintió, la jugada era un póker de nueve, sonrió al ver el rostro descompuesto de Patrick.

—Es tu turno, a menos que tengas miedo de quedar en evidencia —se burló Ray.

Patrick lo miró con cara de pocos amigos, mientras su jugada fue quedando sobre la mesa.

—Escalera de color —susurró Patrick, con voz ahogada.

—Señor, felicidades —dijo la dealer de la mesa—. Usted gana…

Tanto Paul como Patrick palidecieron. Paul había perdido a su hermana en una apuesta y Patrick tenía un trofeo que no había buscado.
