Introduction

Malia POV

Acordei com uma enxaqueca. Fiquei olhando para o teto acima da minha cabeça por, eu diria, pelo menos meia hora antes de decidir me mexer. Todas as manhãs eram assim desde que me lembro. Respirar é difícil e doloroso na primeira hora, e depois consigo ignorar e seguir o dia. Virando de lado, senti uma pontada de dor nas costas que fez minha cabeça latejar. O que eu estava fazendo no chão?

Sentando-me, massageando as têmporas que pareciam um tambor batendo, olhei ao redor, as memórias da noite passada voltando, inundando minha mente. Bebi com minha irmã, minha outra metade, minha adorável gêmea, que agora dormia encolhida na minha cama. A partir de hoje, nossas vidas vão mudar. Finalmente faremos parte da Reivindicação. Não que estejamos felizes com isso, daí a festa de "beber nossas emoções" que tivemos juntas. Bebi tanto para acalmar os nervos que devo ter desmaiado antes de chegar à cama. Pelo menos, antes de desmaiar, minha irmã me deu um travesseiro e um cobertor.

Observá-la tão pacificamente me revoltava um pouco. Ela não era uma visão feia. Muito pelo contrário, com seus longos cílios acariciando aquela bochecha rosada, sua boca redonda fazendo biquinho sob o nariz pequeno. Ela parecia uma boneca, com seu cabelo loiro longo e brilhante cobrindo metade do rosto adormecido. Aquela mulher pura seria uma presa em poucas horas. E eu não conseguia suportar isso. Sabia que ela poderia lutar bem, mas não era da sua natureza. Temia que a Reivindicação a marcasse para sempre.

Quanto a mim, não estava com medo. Treinei mais do que o suficiente e pretendia desafiar cada lobo que viesse até mim. Sentia que deveria compensar por nós duas. E sejamos francos, o fogo que eu tinha dentro me permitiria aguentar por horas. Entre nós gêmeas, eu era a lutadora. Ao contrário de Sarabella, meu cabelo, sempre preso em um rabo de cavalo apertado para ser prático, era um loiro sujo e empoeirado, que parecia que eu nunca tomava banho. Alguém poderia acreditar nisso porque eu passava meus dias treinando. Embora compartilhássemos as mesmas feições, minhas expressões não eram tão joviais e amáveis quanto as de Bella. As minhas eram endurecidas pela disciplina e constante estado de alerta.

Trabalhei duro por anos, não só porque gostava da sensação de um corpo dolorido após o treino, mas porque minha gêmea e eu compartilhávamos um segredo. Um segredo que guardamos por 10 anos. Bem, era meu, e Bella compartilhava o fardo. Eu já havia me transformado em minha loba.

Jovens lobos se transformavam aos dezesseis anos. Mas eu fui 6 anos adiantada. Minha loba era linda. Pelagem branca sedosa, com um toque de brilho prateado toda vez que a lua lançava um raio de luz sobre mim. Vendo os lobos do nosso bando, minha loba era bastante grande para uma fêmea e para minha idade, embora eu não pudesse comparar, já que minha irmã não se transformou.

Como sempre fomos tão próximas e em sincronia, sempre carreguei a pergunta sem resposta: por que fui a única a me transformar naquela noite? Shila, minha loba, não podia me dizer muito. Ela não sentia nada estranho em Bella. Ainda achava isso estranho. Desde o nascimento, não precisávamos de uma loba para nos comunicarmos mentalmente. Chamávamos isso de bônus do vínculo de gêmeas. Com o passar do tempo, comecei a pensar que era um sinal, ou uma mensagem, para eu assumir a missão de ser a protetora entre nós duas. E levei isso a sério.

Minha transformação ainda era um mistério.

Ninguém se transformava em lobo fora da cerimônia realizada pelo Conselho dos Clãs. Com a população da nossa raça diminuindo, era um tópico preocupante e quente. Anos atrás, decidiram regulamentar a transformação por segurança, e porque foi provado que uma transformação coletiva ajudava os lobos a emergirem pela primeira vez com menos risco de os jovens lobos enlouquecerem ou, pior, morrerem.

Em nossa sociedade de lobisomens, esse não era o único grande problema. Havia um boato circulando de que a Deusa da Lua nos abandonou. Os sinais eram mais óbvios a cada dia. Não só pela dificuldade em se transformar, mas também porque os pares de companheiros destinados eram tão raros que não havia nenhum. Gravidezes com um companheiro escolhido eram difíceis e, se não bem monitoradas, acabavam aumentando a taxa de mortalidade em vez do contrário. Muitas fêmeas morriam durante o parto ou perdiam o filhote ao longo do caminho. Ou ambos não sobreviviam. Os machos estavam desesperados, e as fêmeas aterrorizadas. Ninguém sabia o que fazer ou a quem recorrer. Muitos lobos deixaram os clãs para se isolarem e se tornarem Renegados.

Orações não eram ouvidas. A dor era ignorada.

Meu coração doía com o desespero da minha espécie à beira da extinção.

No início, a Reivindicação era para ajudar a provocar um vínculo destinado. Dezesseis anos é muito jovem, mas ainda assim, os Anciãos achavam que precisávamos tentar. Regras foram criadas para manter a ordem sobre o acasalamento e garantir a segurança. As fêmeas deviam ser protegidas a todo custo. Eu tinha que admitir que, às vezes, sentia um pouco de alívio por nenhum vínculo destinado ser mais estabelecido. No final, isso te prendia nas garras dos Anciãos e te transformava em algum tipo de experimento. Pelo menos, era o que eu sentia.

Mais tarde, eles adicionaram a parte da competição à cerimônia, daí o nome ser a Reivindicação.

Muitos compareciam à cerimônia. Mais pela parte da reivindicação do que pela transformação. Lobos machos podiam entrar em uma loteria e ter a chance de participar do torneio para reivindicar uma companheira escolhida. Era a única maneira de companheiros escolhidos serem permitidos a se unir. Uma decisão amigável entre dois amigos para formar uma parceria ou simplesmente escolherem um ao outro por amor era considerada perigosa e proibida. Considerando os riscos da gravidez, os Anciãos realizavam o torneio para garantir que o lobo mais forte pudesse reivindicar a fêmea. Eu acreditava que era aí que errávamos, mas quem era eu, uma jovem fêmea que, aos olhos dos outros, ainda não havia se transformado? Não tínhamos voz nisso, mesmo sendo filhas do único casal de Alfa e Luna que se revelou destinado.

Nossos pais foram o único casal destinado a ser criado em mais de 50 anos.

Eles não se encontraram na primeira cerimônia de transformação da nossa mãe. O que, sinceramente, teria sido nojento.
