«Ya odio este lugar», pensó Freida.
Entrecerró los ojos bajo la luz del sol, de pie fuera de la puerta trasera de su nueva casa. Usando su mano como visera para protegerse del sol, escaneó el vertedero que se suponía era 'el jardín'.
Montones de electrodomésticos oxidados, latas de pintura viejas y basura en general se amontonaban junto a una cerca que parecía a punto de colapsar con una buena ráfaga de viento.
Sintió que la boca se le abría cuando alguien al otro lado de la cerca arrojó una lata vacía de cola hacia su lado. Rebotó en el microondas roto y rodó hasta su pie.
—Disculpa —dijo, incapaz de disimular la pura indignación en su voz—. ¿Qué demonios?
En lugar de una respuesta, escuchó el sonido de pasos alejándose y el portazo de una puerta.
—Oh, no, no, no —murmuró para sí misma. No iba a tolerar esto.
Mamá le había pedido que limpiara el jardín, pero no tenía sentido si el vecino grosero lo usaba como su vertedero personal.
Sin pensarlo más, atravesó su casa, salió por la puerta principal y se dirigió a la casa del vecino. El césped que bordeaba su jardín delantero estaba crecido, lleno de maleza y con parches. No había ningún coche en la entrada y no había cortinas en las ventanas.
«Tal vez nadie vive allí», pensó. «Tal vez es un okupa».
—Genial —murmuró mientras golpeaba la puerta para llamar la atención del que tiraba basura.
Cuando la puerta se abrió hacia adentro y él salió, casi lamentó sus decisiones de vida. Su anterior molestia se desvaneció, reemplazada por el miedo.
Freida tragó saliva.
Era absolutamente enorme. El tipo debía medir al menos dos metros, con hombros anchos y brazos musculosos cruzados sobre su pecho.
Y parecía enojado.
—¿Qué quieres? —gruñó, con los ojos fulminándola mientras la miraba con el ceño fruncido.
—Quiero que no tires tu basura en mi jardín —soltó con una vocecita aguda antes de poder editarse.
—¿Perdona? —preguntó. El ceño fruncido en su rostro se volvió más confundido que enojado—. ¿De qué estás hablando?
—¿Eres estúpido? —preguntó antes de que su cerebro pudiera reaccionar por completo.
Él dio un paso adelante, obligándola a retroceder. Casi tropezó con su propia pierna mientras se alejaba de él.
—¿Tocas a mi puerta lanzando acusaciones... y ahora me llamas estúpido?
—Si te queda el zapato —soltó Freida, una vez más dejando que su boca hablara sin pensar en lo que decía.
En algún lugar, en lo profundo de su instinto, sus entrañas le gritaban que se callara. Que hacer un enemigo de este vecino enorme y enojado solo iba a terminar mal para ella.
Pero la otra parte de su cerebro se negaba a escuchar. La otra parte de su cerebro estaba complacida con el conocimiento de que tenía la razón. Él estaba equivocado y merecía que se lo dijeran.
—Uf. —Él miró hacia arriba, vio la furgoneta de mudanza y se llevó la mano a la cara—. Genial. Otro vecino nuevo.
Freida frunció el ceño, viendo una sonrisa inquietante aparecer detrás de sus dedos extendidos.
Él se rió en voz baja—. Me pregunto cuánto tiempo durarás. Personalmente, sabiendo cómo va a ser para ti a partir de ahora, te doy semanas. Meses como mucho.
—Haz lo peor que puedas, imbécil —desafió Freida, incapaz de contener la ira que burbujeaba desde su interior.
—¿Imbécil? —preguntó, dando otro paso adelante. Sus ojos estaban abiertos en una mezcla de diversión e indignación—. ¿Imbécil?
Freida pensó que él iba a golpearla cuando alguien la jaló por detrás.
—¡Ay! —siseó.
Se dio la vuelta y vio que era su hermano pequeño quien la había arrastrado lejos del horrible vecino.
—Oh, Dios mío, ¿qué has hecho? —dijo él. El pánico en su voz hizo que la sangre de Freida se helara—. ¿Qué demonios has hecho? Oh, no. Oh, no, no, no. ¿No sabes quién es? ¿Estás completamente loca?
Él tiró de Freida a través de la puerta principal, echando una mirada temerosa por encima del hombro antes de cerrarla detrás de él.
—Oh, Dios, me vio —gimió Nathan. Se echó a llorar mientras caía al suelo—. Mi vida se acabó. Se acabó. Estoy muerto.
—¿De qué estás hablando? —preguntó Freida. Miró por la mirilla y vio al vecino parado allí con una enorme sonrisa en su rostro.
—Ese es Damon Crosswell —dijo Nathan como si ese nombre debiera significar algo para ella—. Debes haber oído hablar de él.
Freida tragó saliva mientras negaba con la cabeza.
—Él aterroriza la escuela. A los profesores y a los estudiantes. Es... un monstruo. No estoy en ninguna de sus clases, así que he logrado evitarlo... hasta ahora. —Nathan bajó la mirada, pero Freida podía decir que todavía estaba llorando por el vaho en sus gafas—. Estoy muerto.
—Estoy segura de que no te va a culpar por lo que yo dije —ofreció Freida, tratando de sonar convincente.
—Oh, sí, porque parece un tipo totalmente razonable, ¿verdad? —dijo Nathan, enfadándose con ella—. ¿Qué demonios te pasa? No puedo creer que hicieras eso.
Con eso, él pasó junto a ella y corrió a su habitación, cerrando la puerta de un portazo.
Freida no se había sentido tan mal desde la vez que accidentalmente aplastó a su hámster.
Se aferraba a la vaga esperanza de que este tal Damon no se vengara de su hermano, a pesar de saber la verdad.

—Eh... Mamá... e-el tipo de al lado...
—Psicópata —declaró su madre sin ninguna duda en su voz. Esto no era nada nuevo. Mamá pensaba que todos eran psicópatas—. Mantente alejada. Sé educada. No. Te. Involucres.
Freida asintió, sabiendo que ya era demasiado tarde para seguir ese consejo.
Ya se había involucrado por completo.
«Ahora solo tengo que esperar que no lastime a mi hermano por mi culpa».
