Je ne comprends pas comment ça peut être son heure. Ma mère, une femme gentille, repose dans un cercueil en cèdre décoré.

Mon beau-père, se tenant la poitrine, fait semblant de ressentir une douleur que je sais qu'il ne ressent pas. Juste la veille de sa mort, il a giflé ma mère et l'a traitée de "salope inutile."

Il ne voulait que son argent.

Quand j'étais dans la voiture, je tourne les yeux vers la fenêtre et regarde le cimetière disparaître de ma vue.

C'est alors que je le vois.

Un homme, grand, vêtu de noir. Il est pâle, presque luminescent. Ses cheveux noirs sont lissés en arrière. Il lève la tête et me regarde droit dans les yeux.

J'ai l'impression qu'il regarde directement dans mon âme.

Je n'aurais jamais dû prendre la fille.

Ce salaud de beau-père est un cauchemar, un joueur, et il mérite de mourir.

Le salaud a dit, "S'il vous plaît, Monsieur Severin. Regardez-la au moins. Je lui ai appris des compétences, elle est comme sa mère, eh bien, il y a toujours la chambre."

"Ta gueule !!" Je ne supporte pas sa voix dégoûtante.

Je ne peux détacher mes yeux.

Le prêtre se tient derrière le trou béant où le cercueil de ma mère va bientôt être descendu, sa voix monotone résonne de tristesse que je ne peux même pas comprendre. Autour de moi, les reniflements remplissent l'air alors que les amis de ma mère et les membres de la famille de mon beau-père pleurent la disparition de Sarah Voss, mais je ne peux m'empêcher de fixer cette boîte, celle où elle repose. Celle où elle reposera pour toujours.

Une autre larme jaillit, coulant silencieusement sur ma joue. Comme les autres, je ne l'essuie pas. Contrairement aux cris dramatiques de ceux qui m'entourent, ma tristesse est réelle. La douleur dans ma poitrine est si profonde que j'ai l'impression que mon cœur est déchiré en deux. J'essaie de me représenter son visage tel qu'il était la semaine dernière, quand nous jouions du piano ensemble, mais tout ce que je vois, c'est la pâle représentation d'elle que j'ai fixée ce matin alors que ce même prêtre continuait sans fin à l'intérieur de la chapelle derrière moi sur le fait que Dieu ne nous prend que lorsqu'il est temps.

Je ne comprends pas comment cela pourrait être son heure. Ma mère n'avait que quarante-deux ans. Elle était active et en bonne santé. C'était une bonne femme, le genre de personne à laquelle on dit aux enfants qu'ils devraient aspirer. Maintenant, elle repose dans une boîte en cèdre décorée, la plaie sur son abdomen causée par l'accident de voiture cachée sous des couches de taffetas bleu, la douleur sur son visage dissimulée par un rouge à lèvres épais d'une teinte qu'elle n'a jamais possédée et un fard à paupières bleu qui frôle le vulgaire.

Enfin, le prêtre termine son discours de deuil. Bien que ses mots semblent sincères, ils auraient facilement pu s'appliquer à la dernière personne qu'il a envoyée rencontrer son créateur. Il pourrait également les utiliser demain. Il ne connaissait pas ma mère. En fait, si je devais détourner mes yeux du cercueil et scruter le sol, je dirais que personne ici ne la connaissait – pas même son mari.

Personne ne connaissait Sarah Elizabeth Wilson Heathe Voss comme je la connaissais. Et maintenant, personne ne la connaîtra jamais.

Les gémissements et les sanglots augmentent alors que le cercueil est descendu dans le sol. À côté de moi, Henry, mon beau-père, se tient la poitrine, plié en deux par une douleur qu'il ne ressent pas. C'est un acte, une façon de gagner la sympathie de ceux qui pourraient regarder. Il n'est pas au-dessus de lui de faire tout ce qu'il peut pour essayer de manipuler la foule en lui faisant croire qu'il est grandement affligé alors que juste le jour avant qu'elle ne meure, il a giflé ma mère au visage et l'a appelée "salope sans valeur."

Je détourne mes yeux du cercueil orné juste au moment où il disparaît sous la surface et je le fixe. Ses yeux sont injectés de sang, mais cela pourrait être dû à l'alcool. Les larmes semblent réelles, mais elles ne viennent pas du cœur. Il n'a jamais aimé ma mère; il ne voulait que son argent. Quand mon père est mort, il a laissé derrière lui une fortune considérable. Maintenant que Maman est partie, tout ira à lui. En fait, je ne serais pas choquée de voir un sourire de loup caché derrière le mouchoir avec lequel il protège son visage.

Le prêtre fait signe à la famille d'avancer pour jeter des roses sur la tombe de ma mère. Henry prend mon bras comme si nous étions père et fille et me conduit vers l'avant. Nous cueillons des fleurs rouges dans un vase et nous nous tenons avec nos orteils au bord de l'abîme. Je ne vois pas son visage souriant sous le couvercle du cercueil – je ne vois que le dessin animé qu'ils ont peint d'elle. Nous jetons nos roses, et elles atterrissent avec un bruit sourd sur le couvercle de cèdre qui résonne hors du trou et se dissipe dans le vent.

Avec une profonde inspiration, je laisse Henry m'éloigner de ma mère vers la limousine noire qui nous ramènera au manoir qu'il a acheté il y a quelques années – avec l'argent de mon père. Je traîne les pieds, non pas parce que je veux m'attarder au cimetière, mais parce que je ne veux pas être enfermée dans le véhicule avec lui. Je ne veux pas rentrer dans une maison immense qui semble complètement vide sans son rire.

Je ne veux pas la laisser derrière dans un trou sombre dans la terre, recouvert de six pieds de terre – et une poignée de roses mourantes.

Dès que le chauffeur ferme la porte sur nous, Henry ricane, secouant la tête. "Eh bien, je suis content que ce soit terminé." Il essuie son nez avec le mouchoir que ma mère avait brodé de ses initiales le printemps dernier et le met dans la poche de sa veste, ses yeux errant sur mon visage. "Essuie ces larmes, Alice. Ça ne sert à rien de pleurer pour elle. Ça ne la ramènera pas."

Au lieu de lever la main pour essuyer mon visage strié de larmes, je tourne les yeux vers la fenêtre et regarde le cimetière disparaître de vue.

C'est alors que je le vois.

Un homme, grand, vêtu de noir, comme presque tout le monde, se tient en marge de la foule qui se dissipe lentement autour de la tombe de ma mère. Je ne peux pas voir son visage à cette distance, mais il est pâle, presque luminescent. Ses cheveux noirs sont lissés en arrière. Je dois me forcer à garder les yeux sur lui alors que nous prenons un virage sur la route. Juste avant qu'il ne disparaisse de ma ligne de vue, il lève la tête et me regarde droit dans les yeux, et même s'il est à au moins deux cents pieds de distance, et que je suis derrière une fenêtre teintée, j'ai l'impression qu'il regarde directement dans mon âme.

Je frissonne et détourne le regard, priant de ne jamais revoir cet homme.

À côté de moi, Henry fait une remarque désagréable sur le fait que c'est aussi bien que nous n'ayons pas de gens chez nous après les funérailles. La dernière chose qu'il veut faire, c'est continuer à faire semblant devant tout le monde, pleurnicher et sangloter. "C'est vraiment pathétique," murmure-t-il.

Je ne dis rien, je fixe seulement mon regard sur la fenêtre, jouant distraitement avec des mèches de cheveux blonds de la même nuance que ceux de ma mère. Et comme si les cieux eux-mêmes pleuraient ma perte, le ciel s'ouvre, une pluie torrentielle s'abattant sur la vitre, les arbres, le cimetière, le cercueil partiellement enterré – mais pas ma mère. Non, elle ne sentira plus jamais la pluie.

Et je ne sentirai plus jamais son amour, ou un amour comme le sien.
