Chapter 1
El eco distante de cascos al galope perturbó el profundo silencio que inundaba la pradera. Aquel vasto mar de hierba ondulaba en el frío viento del norte, que inclinaba las briznas en ondas continuas hacia los primeros árboles. El bosque descendía de las colinas que acotaban la entrada al valle, atravesando la elevada planicie como un muro de sombras impenetrables. Las nubes flotaban sin prisa sobre la pradera, ocultando la luna y las estrellas.
Poco después, dos docenas de sombras superaron la última cuesta que llevaba a la pradera, figuras oscuras y tambaleantes corriendo a los tumbos en dirección al bosque.
—¡Allí está! —gritaron.
—¡Un esfuerzo más!
—¡No se detengan!
El grupo se precipitó hacia el extremo opuesto de la pradera, donde las sombras del bosque prometían refugio. Eran hombres y mujeres, al menos media docena de niños, todos ellos sucios, lastimados, descalzos, el terror pintado en sus rostros. Los que iban solos se adelantaron en una carrera desesperada hacia los árboles. Las familias intentaban mantenerse unidas, llevando a los más débiles y jóvenes de la mano para que no quedaran atrás. Entre ellos, el herrero sujetó con fuerza los dedos de su esposa, que jadeaba con un brazo en torno al abultado vientre.
Tras ellos, el sonido inconfundible de los cascos subía por la cuesta, impidiéndoles detenerse.
Los jinetes no tardaron en irrumpir en la pradera. Eran una veintena, protegidos del frío por pesados mantos de lujosa confección, las claras cabelleras recogidas, para que el viento no las echara en sus rostros pálidos de belleza etérea. Sofrenaron sus cabalgaduras, llevándolas al paso hasta que los fugitivos llegaron a mitad de camino del bosque. Entonces, todos a una, empuñaron largas lanzas de plata y espolearon sus caballos.
Los fugitivos los oyeron e intentaron apresurarse, soltando gritos de alarma. Algunos tropezaron y cayeron, desapareciendo en el ondulante mar de hierba. Nadie se detuvo a ayudarlos. Ya no había tiempo. Los demás siguieron corriendo hacia el bosque sin mirar atrás, el terror atenaceándolos, los corazones a punto de estallar en los pechos, donde el aire helado de la noche parecía quemar sus pulmones.
Los jinetes se lanzaron sobre ellos como una exhalación. Algunos se entretuvieron ultimando a quienes cayeran, que intentaban ocultarse entre la hierba o incorporarse para seguir corriendo. La mayoría de ellos continuó la persecución. Sus lanzas alcanzaban a los fugitivos, derribándolos aún con vida. Entonces, los jinetes saltaban de sus monturas sin molestarse por sofrenar sus caballos y se abatían sobre los caídos. Los gritos de agonía se mezclaron con los chasquidos de filosos colmillos hundiéndose en la carne que aún palpitaba.
De pronto, una docena de sombras enormes surgieron bajo los árboles. La luna asomó entre las nubes por un momento, iluminando los grandes lobos, del tamaño de toros, que corrían a largos saltos hacia la carnicería en medio de la pradera.
Algunos fugitivos vacilaron al verlos, y su vacilación los hizo presas fáciles de los perseguidores. Los lobos los ignoraron para saltar sobre los caballos, derribándolos antes de entenderse con los jinetes.
En medio de aquella matanza, el herrero tironeó de la mano de su esposa para instarla a hacer un último esfuerzo. La leyenda era cierta: el bosque embrujado protegía la entrada al Valle de los Lobos, enemigos jurados del clan que acababa de masacrar a toda su aldea. Y la leyenda decía que quienes cruzaran el límite hallarían refugio, y la rara oportunidad de una vida pacífica a salvo de los inmortales.
Un paso tras él, su esposa soltó un gemido ahogado y trastabilló. Sabía que no llegaría mucho más lejos. Sus pies descalzos y lastimados resbalaban en su propia sangre, sus piernas se negaban a seguir sosteniéndola, el aire parecía no llegar a su pecho. Lo único que la empujaba a continuar era el bebé en su vientre, que nacería en cualquier momento. Entonces sintió que un ardor lacerante le atravesaba el hombro derecho, y vio con incredulidad alucinada la pálida vara que surgió de su propia carne, yendo a clavarse en la tierra frente a ella y deteniéndola con un tirón desgarrador.
El herrero advirtió que la mano de su esposa se escapaba entre sus dedos y oyó su grito de dolor. Retrocedió horrorizado, hallándola prisionera en la lanza del jinete, que saltó sobre ella antes que él llegara a su lado.
Su esposa había caído de rodillas, todavía aferrándose el vientre, los ojos turbios alzados hacia él, el rostro descompuesto en una mueca de dolor y desesperación. El jinete se situó tras ella con sonrisa aviesa. Le aferró la larga melena enredada y jaló violentamente hacia atrás, exponiendo el cuello a sus filosos colmillos, que se clavaron en la carne con fuerza.
—¡No! —gritó el herrero—. ¡Auxilio!
El espanto lo paralizó mientras el jinete bebía la sangre de su esposa, al mismo tiempo que el veneno de sus colmillos la paralizaba.
Hasta que un gemido de su esposa lo hizo reaccionar. Entones se abalanzó enloquecido sobre el jinete, empujándolo hacia atrás con todas sus fuerzas. Los colmillos desgarraron la carne de su esposa y la sangre manó de su herida, bañándole el pecho y los harapos que la cubrían. El jinete se irguió con una carcajada malévola y aferró al herrero por el cuello, alzándolo hasta que sus pies no tocaban el suelo. El herrero no se resistió. Sabía que era en vano.
Cerró los ojos esperando el golpe de gracia. En cambio, cayó al suelo junto a su esposa agonizante.
El lobo más grande de la manada peleaba con el jinete, que había desenvainado una espada corta.
El herrero se arrastró hacia atrás aterrorizado, intentando proteger a su esposa.
El lobo esquivó los lances y saltó sobre el jinete, cerrando las poderosas mandíbulas en torno a su cuello. Sacudió varias veces el cuerpo inerte entre gruñidos guturales, hasta que la cabeza del jinete se desprendió y cayó al suelo. Entonces soltó el cadáver, que se desplomó cubriendo a medias a la mujer y bañándola en su sangre.
El terror paralizó al herrero al ver que la gigantesca criatura se acercaba, la sangre del jinete aún goteando de su hocico. No se atrevió a resistirse cuando el lobo apartó el cadáver del jinete con su pata y bajó la cabeza hacia su esposa, que por algún milagro aún respiraba con estertores entrecortados.
La olió y gruñó, retrocediendo un paso. Entonces echó la gran cabeza hacia atrás y soltó un aullido largo, poderoso, que pareció golpear en el pecho al herrero. Cayó sentado hacia atrás y eso lo hizo reaccionar. Se echó de rodillas, la cara contra la tierra húmeda de sangre, las manos juntas en alto.
—¡Sálvalos, mi señor lobo! ¡Te lo ruego!—gimió.
Algo frío y húmedo tocó su sien y alzó apenas la cabeza. El lobo lo observaba con una mirada de inteligencia sobrenatural en sus ojos dorados.
—¡Por favor! —suplicó—. ¡Toma mi vida! ¡Pero salva a mi esposa y a mi hijo!
Mientras hablaba, un nutrido grupo de hombres se acercó desde el bosque a todo correr. No quedaban rastros de los jinetes, más que un puñado de cuerpos decapitados y caballos que se alejaban solos al galope.
Los lobos se habían diseminado por la pradera, señalando la ubicación de los fugitivos que sobrevivieran la carnicería. Los hombres del bosque se separaban para ir al encuentro de los lobos, y pronto tres llegaron junto al herrero. Uno de ellos lo ayudaba a incorporarse cuando otro retrocedió, alejándose de su esposa amedrentado.
—¡Esta mujer fue mordida, mi señor! —exclamó—. ¡No podemos salvarla!
El lobo se volvió hacia él y emitió un gruñido profundo. Los hombres inclinaron la cabeza de inmediato y se apresuraron a levantar a la mujer moribunda. No retiraron la lanza que le atravesaba el hombro, para no provocar una hemorragia que la mataría de inmediato. El herrero los siguió a los tumbos, aturdido, incapaz de hablar o tan siquiera pensar, un temblor incontenible sacudiéndolo de pies a cabeza.
Tardaron lo que pareció una eternidad en atravesar el bosque. Al otro lado, a la sombra de los últimos árboles, se alzaba una aldea iluminada por antorchas, las callejuelas llenas de gente que iba y venía apresurada para recibir a los sobrevivientes.
La esposa del herrero fue conducida a una casa de techo bajo que apestaba a humo y hierbas medicinales. Una mujer desaliñada, la cabeza envuelta en tiras de tela de colores brillantes, los guió a depositarla en una pesada mesa de madera y luego los empujó hacia la puerta que acababan de cruzar.
—¡Fuera! —ladró.
Los hombres sujetaron al herrero y lo obligaron a ir con ellos. El gran lobo negro de ojos dorados entró cuando se disponían a salir. Los hombres inclinaron la cabeza con respeto y arrastraron al herrero de regreso a la calle.
—¡Quieto ahí! —lo regañó uno de ellos, deteniéndolo cuando intentó apartarlos para volver a entrar a la casa—. Tu esposa no verá la luz del día, pero tal vez la bruja y el Alfa puedan salvar a tu hijo.
