Chapter 1
Catástrofe.

Alexander originalmente tenía una apariencia atractiva y bien cuidada, y era considerado un chico guapo. Pero ahora se veía algo desaliñado, con una barba sin afeitar, el cabello ligeramente largo y pegajoso, y la ropa cubierta de grasa y manchas, lo que lo hacía bastante inconspicuo en la multitud.
Caminando rápidamente, Alexander levantó la vista en la intersección, preparándose para regresar a su residencia por el lado izquierdo.
—¡Oye, joven...!
Una voz clara llamó. Una mujer con un vestido algo descolorido, envuelta en una chaqueta, tiró ligeramente de Alexander desde el borde de la carretera.

—No puedo pagarlo. —Alexander sonrió y siguió caminando.
—Espera. —La mujer extendió la mano y volvió a tirar de Alexander—. ¿Qué tal dos dólares?
Alexander miró a la mujer de arriba abajo, hizo una pausa por un momento y continuó sacudiendo la cabeza. —No tengo dinero —dijo.
—¿No te intereso? Hay otras adentro.
—De verdad, no tengo dinero. —Alexander se encogió de hombros—. Suéltame. Tengo prisa por llegar a casa.
La mujer mordió su labio rojo, su pequeña mano agarrando fuertemente a Alexander. Después de un largo silencio, añadió suavemente: —Dos platos de espaguetis servirían, pero tiene que ser medido con mi plato.
Alexander frunció el ceño. —Dije que no tengo nada. ¡Lárgate!
La mujer aún no lo soltaba. Mirando hacia un grupo de niños de alrededor de siete años junto a la tienda, dijo: —Tengo tres hijos. Si no consigo ningún negocio esta noche, no podré alimentarlos. Por favor, joven, ayúdame una vez. Incluso un plato de espaguetis servirá. Haré cualquier cosa para pagarte.
Alexander miró a la mujer y dijo fríamente: —¿Cuántos años lleva el mundo así? En un entorno como este, si no puedes alimentar a tus hijos, ¿por qué los tuviste?
La mujer se quedó atónita.
Alexander se soltó bruscamente de su mano, ajustó su abrigo y siguió caminando.
La mujer se quedó en su lugar por un rato, luego corrió rápidamente de regreso a la tienda, jadeando mientras decía: —Ese tipo tiene comida. La tiene. Cuando lo agarré, vi que escondía algo en su abrigo.
Aproximadamente media hora después.
Alexander regresó a un edificio de seis pisos en ruinas, subió las viejas escaleras polvorientas y entró en su hogar en el quinto piso.
Solo Alexander y su amigo Daniel vivían en ese edificio. Las paredes exteriores se habían derrumbado parcialmente. En los viejos tiempos, se habría considerado un edificio al borde de la demolición. Pero en esta era, el significado de hogar se limitaba a donde estabas, no a donde vivías. Alexander eligió este lugar porque no tenía electricidad ni agua, por lo que no tenía que soportar costosos gastos de vida.
El interior era muy simple, con una cama, dos armarios rotos, sin instalaciones de entretenimiento, y el único libro, una revista militar desgastada publicada en 2019.
Después de entrar en la habitación, Alexander se quitó su abrigo sucio, sacó una bolsa de lona brillante de su chaqueta y caminó cuidadosamente hacia la cama. Luego tomó un cuenco roto y comenzó a sacar espaguetis tentadores de la bolsa, gritando:
—¡Daniel, ¿está lista la comida?!
—Todavía no, acabo de llegar —respondió una voz desde la habitación interior. Un joven de edad similar a Alexander, con piel oscura y rostro rudo, salió.
Justo cuando Alexander estaba a punto de hablar con Daniel, de repente se escucharon pasos ensordecedores desde abajo. Alexander se detuvo, inmediatamente escondió la bolsa y el cuenco en el armario. Luego caminó hacia la puerta, que era solo una tabla de madera rota.
En menos de diez segundos, siete u ocho niños menores de diez años, liderando a decenas de hombres y mujeres, aparecieron en la escalera.
Las escaleras estaban afuera, con concreto agrietado y barandillas oxidadas. Tanta gente subiendo juntas hacía que el edificio en ruinas pareciera temblar.
Alexander levantó inmediatamente la mano y gritó:
—No... no suban así. Las escaleras se van a colapsar.
—Tío Alexander, tengo hambre.
—Tío Alexander, quiero comer...
Los niños, cada uno con un pequeño cuenco, estaban en las escaleras, mirando a Alexander con caras sucias.
—Yo también tengo hambre. ¿Han cenado en casa? Si no, comamos juntos —respondió Alexander con una sonrisa juguetona.
Los niños eran puros con mentes simples, pero los adultos detrás de ellos habían arrancado sus disfraces humanos básicos. Un hombre corpulento con la cabeza rapada fue el primero en gritar:
—Danos la comida, o no bajarás.
—No tengo comida —Alexander agitó la mano y respondió—. De verdad, no tengo. Todos somos fantasmas hambrientos en este distrito anárquico. No es fácil para ninguno de nosotros. Si realmente tuviera algo, se los daría. Al menos se lo daría a estos niños...
—Corta el rollo. Vi que tenías comida —continuó gritando el hombre corpulento—. Apúrate, danos la mitad y nos iremos.
—No. —Alexander sacudió la cabeza.
—Entren en su habitación —gritó el hombre corpulento.
—Tío Alexander, quiero comer. Dame comida.
La multitud avanzó, y las escaleras colgantes fuera del edificio volvieron a temblar como si pudieran colapsar en cualquier momento.
Alexander miró a la multitud que se agolpaba, sus ojos se enrojecieron al instante. Levantó su pierna derecha y sacó un cuchillo de su pantalón sucio con su mano derecha. Apuntando a la multitud, gritó:
—¿Me están intimidando porque estoy solo? ¡En este lugar, nadie tiene miedo a la muerte! Tengo comida, pero tendrán que romper este cuchillo para conseguirla.
La multitud se detuvo brevemente, y el hombre corpulento gritó fríamente:
—Los niños están al frente. Adelante, apuñálalos primero.
