Chapter 99
[Third-Person’s POV]
Unlike her husband, Isabella was well aware of the situation that was unfolding in front of all of them. She didn’t know who this Michael character was, nor did she really care. But ever since Evelyn showed up and began derailing her plans to get rid of Edward, she’d been looking for a way to get rid of her too.
Based on the way that this Michael person was looking at Evelyn, Isabella was beginning to form a plan.
Oh, yes. One that would undoubtedly ruin Evelyn’s reputation as well as her marriage.
She hid her devious smile beneath the rim of her glass and began to plot. She wasn’t certain if Samantha had the chance to use the aphrodisiac on her husband yet; so, there was no telling how potent the drug was or how quickly the effects would kick in.
But, hey? Why not test it out on Evelyn where she could easily find out first hand?
Isabella knew that the chances of getting close to her Stepdaughter were slim to nothing. Evelyn spent the majority of her time locked away in her brother’s room. Finding a way to get her to take the aphrodisiac may not prove to be as easy.
But it had to be done.
She had come too close to finally getting the life she wanted. Soon enough she would give birth to her son and they could gain total control of the Silverwood pack the way it was always meant to be. Getting Edward truly and finally out of the way wouldn’t be much of a problem either once Evelyn becomes too busy trying to fix her own problems.
All Isabella had to do was bide her time and wait for the opportunity to properly present itself. Once she could manage to slip Evelyn the aphrodisiac, she’d let fate take off the rest.
With that drug running through her system, she won’t be able to control even her own thoughts.
...
Alexander, although deeply troubled by the sudden revelation that had been brought to his attention, was glad to be making strides of progress on his end.
After the initial shock wore off, the reality of it all didn't come as a total surprise. Alexander always knew that he was on the Alpha King’s radar. Troubling as it was, it made sense that the man would try and have him taken out.
Alexander knew that surviving the car crash essentially caused trouble for everyone—including the king. It certainly made sense as to why the guy kept pushing for Alexander to get married too.
Little did any of them realize that he’d been matched with one of the most intelligent and capable women in the entire region. Alexander seriously believed that Evelyn had the full potential to become as intently skilled as him.
He could train her to become a top-notch fighter and an even better strategist like himself. Evelyn had the inner spirit and the drive to dedicate herself just as she had with her etiquette lessons. There was no doubt that she would succeed.
Just the thought of envisioning their future together—the insane dynamic couple they would be—did nothing but excite him and made him eager to finish up whatever business they had left.
All he wanted to do was return back home and pick up where he and Evelyn left off. She’d been on his mind nonstop since the two of them split. All he could do was hope that she was able to properly help her brother.
Honestly, if anyone could find a way to work miracles when it comes to a person’s health and well-being, it’s her.
Alexander tried to hide the fact that he was slightly worried he hadn’t heard any update from his grandmother since the day before. He tried not to read too much into it all but there was an unsettling feeling in his stomach.
“After this, I think we should head to Evelyn’s family home,” he said to Oliver.
The Beta nodded his head without argument.
Having spoken to one of the managers at the junkyard, the two of them were directed to a nearby mechanic shop. At first, neither of them understood the relevance of taking the trip over there. However, the old man was rather insistent on the matter.
“Trust me,” he’d said. “The answers you’re looking for are going to be found over at Matteo’s. He’s been running that mechanic shop for years and a couple of months back, the two of us met up at a local bar in town to catch up like we normally do. Well, let’s just say, the man was utterly distraught that night. After a few beers, he went on talking about how this one deranged customer came in and requested to have the breaklines removed from the car. I have a very strong feeling that the two cases are connected.”
Alexander knew they had to check out that mechanic shop and speak to this Matteo person.
It was, indeed, an intriguing development and worth looking into. They had thanked the man for his time and asked if he’d be willing to testify if this case needed to be taken to court. He agreed without a single hesitation.
When they made it to the mechanic’s they found a middle-aged, dark-haired man standing behind the main counter with a faraway look in his eyes.
Oh, yeah. This has to be Matteo.
The poor man looked as though he was wracked with guilt. Something was surely eating away at his mind.
Alexander and Oliver slowly approached the counter.
“Hello, we were sent by one of the managers from the junkyard here in town,” Oliver said. “He told us that you may have the answers we’re looking for, regarding a certain car you worked on months ago.”
Matteo slowly glanced up. He eyed them both with caution.
Alexander could sense the guy was terribly uncertain. He softened his tone and took a step closer.
“We’re talking about the car that had the brake lines cut,” he said. “We’re running a private investigation on the guy that brought the car in here, initially and requested these ‘alterations’.”
The mechanic solemnly hung his head. “I haven’t been able to keep myself from thinking about that one customer since he came in. I thought the guy was insane for what he was asking of me.”
His features pinched with stress as he went on.
“I kept trying to deny his demands but he kept throwing more and more money at me. You see, things have been tight, financially, for the last two years. It reached a point where I just couldn’t pass up the deal. In the end, I felt horrible and ashamed for what I had done.”
Alexander took out that same photo he’d shown the previous guy.
“Was this the guy that came in?”
Matteo glanced down at the picture and looked as though he was going to be sick.
“Yes,” he whispered.
Out of the corner of his eye, Alexander noticed something rather interesting. Unlike the junkyard, Matteo’s shop looked heavily warded with security cameras.
“Do these cameras work?” he asked.
Matteo nodded his head. He suddenly lifted his brows and instructed Alexander and Oliver to follow him back toward his office.
“I should still have the footage from when that guy was here.”
Alexander felt an exhilarated jolt race through him. This was it. This was the proof that was going to seal Michael’s fate for all the damage he’d caused.
Ring! Ring! Ring!
Alexander reached for his phone and saw that Wendy was trying to reach him.
“What’s going on?” he asked.
All the blood drained out of his face when he heard the woman’s frantic tone. “Alexander!”
“What? What is it? What’s wro—”
“Michael isn’t at the manor!” she cried. “He made up this whole story about Nina having to be rushed to the hospital to get me away from Evelyn. I think he’s gone after her.”
FUCK!!
