Chapter 200
[Third-Person’s POV]
Evelyn wasn’t sure how long she stayed behind, catching Edward up on all that had happened. Just when she insisted that the two of them take a break so that he could rest up, Edward refused.
“I’ve been resting for the last several months,” he told her.
So, with that in mind, Evelyn continued. She did her best to skim over everything, starting with the day she found out she was going to be marrying Alexander. Edward scoffed in disdain over Liam’s cruel betrayal but was somewhat smug to know that the man was currently suffering in his own marriage to their Stepsister.
Edward was deeply disturbed to find out about the plot Isabella had crafted in order to get rid of him and take over the Silverwood Pack. When it came to telling him about the night when Isabella and Fiona tortured her, Edward let out an impressive growl. He looked as though he were on the verge of jumping out of bed and storming out of the house.
Evelyn gently pressed her hand against his chest to ease his anger.
“It’s alright,” she told him. “Alexander found me and was able to get help before it was too late.”
His limbs were still horribly weak but it wasn’t enough to stop him from trying to reach out for her. Evelyn closed her eyes as the pads of his fingers fell over the healed tissue of her scars.
“And these?”
Her throat tightened. “Alexander has an amazing doctor who was able to stitch me up. Plus, I’ve been working on a serum that’s been helping a lot with scar inflammation and visibility.”
“My sister, the famous herbalist,” he hummed. “So this Alexander...You sound like you really like him.”
Her face flushed under her brother’s knowing look.
“It wasn’t easy at first. I mean, our marriage was basically an arrangement. We didn’t know anything about each other and now...Well...”
“Eve, the man launched a literal army against the Royal Family because the King had you kidnapped,” he stated. “It’s clear to me that he loves you.”
Evelyn felt a sudden wave of sheepishness come over her. Her words came out hushed.
“Yeah...”
As happy and bubbly as she felt, knowing that she had her brother back fully in her life, she was still hesitant about a few things when it came to her and Alexander. Her feelings hadn’t changed. She loved him. However, within the last twelve hours, everything had changed.
Alexander wasn’t just the Alpha of the Kingston Pack anymore. Now, he was technically the new Alpha King of the entire region. So what exactly did that mean for their relationship?
Edward had always been naturally aware when there was something bothering his sister. He noticed the way she spoke fondly of her husband and was glad beyond anything that the two of them found love between each other. However, there was something else going on inside that head of hers.
“Something is bothering you isn’t there?” he inquired. She opened her mouth only to close it a second later. “Come on, Eve. You know you can tell me anything.”
Evelyn gently bit down on her bottom lip before letting out a long withheld breath.
“It’s just...I’m afraid that this new position is going to change Alexander,” she admitted. “Gaining that kind of power can have a horrible effect on someone and I don’t want it to alter what he and I have now. It took so long for us to get to where we are with each other.”
She didn’t want to think about the possibility of all of it falling to pieces because Alexander was now elevated to an entirely different status. It was a huge deal being the Alpha King. He had a lot of responsibility before when he was just Alpha.
What was this going to do to their relationship now, she wondered.
Edward nodded his head. “You know what I’m going to say, don’t you?”
“You’re going to tell me that I need to stop sulking and talk to Alexander about it,” she answered.
She watched his smile grow. “Exactly. Go talk to him and sort this whole thing out.”
“Are you sure? I know you’re probably sick of listening to me,” she giggled. “But I don’t have to rush back to the manor—”
“Eve. I’m going to be fine, I promise.”
Evelyn wanted to trust the fact that everything was going to gradually work itself back to normal now that Edward was awake. But there was still that part of her that was worried it would turn out to be nothing more than a dream.
She forced down the emotions that burned in her throat. “Okay. I’ll let you get your rest. And just so you know, I’ll be coming back, probably, within the next day or so to check on you.”
“I expect nothing less,” he hummed.
Evelyn leaned down to hug and press a chaste kiss to his cheek. She somewhat dreaded the idea of having to face Alexander.
...
By the time she got back to the house, the sun had already begun to set in the sky. A cloud of guilt drifted over her. She should have at least reached out to either Oliver or Alexander about not returning home until much later.
At least, it wasn’t too late in which everyone had already gone off to bed. As the car pulled up to the manor, Evelyn slipped through the main doors and made it toward the study, believing that was where Alexander would be.
She kept her gaze locked on the floor as she moved. Suddenly, she felt as though she walked into a warm, hard wall. Stumbling back, a pair of hands reached out to steady her.
“There you are.” Alexander’s voice came out strained and rough. “Are you alright?”
Evelyn lifted her eyes from the floor to find Alexander’s filled with concern.
“I...I’m sorry. I should have called or sent a message to let you know...I hadn’t thought to be back so late.”
He shook his head and brought his palm to her cheek.
“You don’t need to explain yourself. It’s not as if I didn’t know where you were,” he offered with a smile. “How’s your brother fairing with everything?”
She gave a watery smile. “Better than I could ever have imagined. Although, he was very curious when he noticed my scars.”
Alexander winced. “Well, that was another reason why I didn’t want to bother you. You two had a lot to catch up on.”
“I tried to sum up everything that’s happened since the accident. I told him about us and what we managed to accomplish together,” she said. “Needless to say, he’s very intrigued to meet you once he’s been cleared by his doctor. But, as far as I can tell, he’s still the same wise-ass that he’s always been.”
Alexander gave her a curious look, prompting her to continue.
“He knew that there was something bothering me and told me that I needed to confront the matter before things got any worse in my mind.”
“And? What’s been bothering you?” Since the early hours of that morning, he knew there was something deeply troubling her.
Evelyn reached up to take his hand in her own. “Alexander, I’m scared. No, actually, I’m horribly petrified.”
His eyes grew wide. “...Of me? Is this about what happened last night when—”
“No,” she denied. “I’m scared about what this new position could end up doing to you and to us. I’m terrified that I could end up losing you to the obligations and responsibilities that come with being King.”
