Chapter 132
[Evelyn’s POV]
A few days had passed since the trial and things weren’t exactly settling back to normal. Once the formal statements had been released from both the King and Alexander, every news outlet in the region was dying to get a personal interview out of either one of them.
Alexander made it a firm point to refuse every news company that was even willing to give him official air time on their specific news station as opposed to a regular article. The answer was still ‘no’.
There had reached a point where I even sat down with him and asked him to explain his reasoning.
“I mean, would really one interview hurt?” I asked. “I understand you want to move on from this but this was a huge shock, Alexander. It’s not every day that someone literally takes their own family member to court and has them sent to prison.”
Alexander leaned back in his chair and pinched the bridge of his nose.
“I understand that. Really, I do. However, this trial was not about gaining attention from the general public,” Alexander said. “Yes, I know that everyone wants more details; but, the whole point was to ensure that Michael was properly dealt with and no longer posed as a threat. Nothing more.”
He had a point.
I could understand the situation of just wanting to move forward. As time ticked on, I wondered if this whole thing upset Alexander in the back of his mind. In other words, was there any ounce of him that was upset for Michael?
Knowing that there had been countless times in which Alexander had tried to help his brother, made it perfectly clear that he’d always supported him to a certain degree. There again, perhaps, that feeling had died when he’d uncovered the truth behind the car accident.
I knew that there were no regrets within Alexander pertaining to that court case. He was right. Michael’s sentencing to prison was a safety precaution and it needed to happen. And now he was looking to move on.
His formal statement to the press had intricately highlighted the major events during his investigation. He was generous enough to even admit some of his own feelings, as well. He stressed the idea that Michael hadn’t been well, mentally speaking, for quite some time and that it was imperative that he seek professional help while in confinement.
Simple and straight to the point. I never had any doubt that Alexander would have taken advantage of the opportunity to tear up Michael’s image any further. He stuck to the facts and let it go.
The Alpha King, on the other hand, had an entirely different outlook on the matter. His formal statement reflected nothing like how he was during the actual trial.
In person, he’d been nothing short of smug and arrogant. If the man could have openly laughed at Alexander every time he’d spoken, he would have. Purely out of disrespect.
However, his statement was practically complementary to Alexander’s. He claimed that he too had his speculations about Michael’s mentality not being one hundred-percent well.
I’d lost count of the number of times I rolled my eyes at his ridiculous remarks.
“This man could not be any more two-faced if he tried,” I muttered to myself.
Alexander snorted under his breath. Oliver shook his head and let out a deep exhale.
“That’s just him playing the part of the concerned King, looking out for his people,” he explained.
“So, it’s all just an act then,” I commented.
“Pretty much,” Alexander said. “The man will lie straight through his teeth if it means trying to stay in the proper limelight with the general public.”
I shook my head in disbelief. “Jesus Christ. That's actually terrible.”
I knew very little about how the whole political game worked. A majority of my knowledge generally went as far as inner pack dynamics. However, when it came to anything more overarching than that, I was at a bit of a loss.
Of course, naturally, I never envisioned marrying a man who possessed ambitions of going against the actual Alpha King.
Maybe, I should begin looking into some current political systems when I have a chance.
While I finished reading through the bullshit statement, Oliver lightly cleared his throat and began to slide into the new topic of conversation that needed to be addressed.
“Sir, are you and Evelyn truly having a second wedding?” he asked.
“Yes,” Alexander responded.
My heart skipped a beat. I hadn’t anticipated being overwhelmed by the sudden nostalgic feeling of once being excited about my wedding day. I knew it came off as a bit immature, given all that’s gone on, I supposed...
But, there was no stopping the jittery excitement that fluttered through me. I felt like a young girl again, happily fantasizing about her wedding day. This time, I was determined to make it perfect for Alexander and myself.
“Well, sir. That being said, are you looking to still take the traditional route? If so, we will need to have something written out to the press as an announcement,” Oliver stated.
I bit the inside of my cheek, wondering what the rest of the outside world was going to think when word got out about us marrying each other again.
Would they all think we’re crazy too?
Alexander lifted his head up from his own pile of papers to shoot me a glance.
“Why not?” he suggested.
“Maybe it will give everyone a good distraction from the case and they’ll stop pushing for an interview,” I said.
A slow smile took over his face. He gestured to Oliver to begin typing something up to send out.
“Let me know what you come up with first and I’ll add to it,” he told him. “There are a few things I want to make a part of the announcement.”
I was truly glad that Nina and Wendy were on board with the idea. It was certainly going to make some of the more major decisions a lot easier to deal with when there were others around, willing to help.
“Have you two talked about when you’re looking to have the ceremony?” Oliver asked.
“Well, Alexander mentioned before about the idea of possibly having the wedding outside in the gardens,” I noted. “I think it’s a wonderful idea and I’m all on board with it. But that being said, I think the best time for that to happen would be sometime in the late Spring to early Summer. By that point, a majority of the flowers and plants will be in full bloom.”
“Sounds beautiful,” Alexander hummed in agreement. “Oliver, I would just have it mentioned that we’re thinking either late Spring or early Summer then.”
Oliver nodded his head and went off to begin writing out the newest statement.
I was glad we were able to move on to something far more enjoyable.
Unfortunately, the only thing that was actively stopping my excitement was the thought of Caroline. I knew for a fact that she had already seen the articles and the tabloids, regarding Michael’s situation.
For the last few days, I’d been eagerly waiting for something to come from her standpoint—hell, at the very least, I was shocked that she hadn’t tried barging into the manor as of yet.
I kept trying to tell myself that maybe it was a good thing. Perhaps, Caroline took this as a warning to not test the waters any further. She must have already known that where Michael was concerned she wasn’t that far off Alexander’s radar.
If she’s smart, she’ll keep to herself. Otherwise, Alexander will ensure that she ends up sharing a prison cell with her son.
