Chapter 1
The night of Aria’s eighteenth birthday was meant to be like any other milestone in the small, tucked-away village of Ravenshade. Candles flickered on the modest cake her mother had baked, their glow painting the wooden beams of their cottage ceiling in warm, familiar light. The scent of vanilla and cinnamon filled the air, mingling with the cool breath of autumn drifting in through the open shutters.
Her best friend, Mara, sat cross-legged on the rug, teasing Aria with playful jabs. “So, are you ready to finally act your age? Or will you still sneak into the meadow just to stare at the stars?”
Aria laughed, though her smile faltered as she met Mara’s mischievous gaze. “I like the stars. They remind me there’s more out there than… this.” She waved her hand at the tiny cottage, the rough-hewn furniture, the baskets of bread cooling by the fire.
Her father chuckled from his chair. “More out there? What else could you want? Family, friends, a roof over your head. That’s all anyone needs.”
Aria lowered her eyes. She loved them—every corner of her small life—but sometimes it felt as though she was a puzzle piece forced into the wrong picture. A hollow yearning pressed against her ribs, one she had never been able to name. Nights like this, with laughter and warmth surrounding her, only made the ache sharper.
The villagers outside sang to the harvest moon. Beyond the voices, though, a different rhythm tugged at her senses. Her skin prickled, her heart beating too fast. It was as if the air itself leaned closer, whispering secrets only she could hear.
She brushed it off at first, focusing on her brother’s attempt to sneak frosting from the cake. Yet every time she glanced at the window, her gaze snagged on the forest edge. Dark, towering pines loomed like guardians, and tonight, they seemed alive.
“Don’t tell me you’re thinking about those woods again,” Mara said, following her eyes. “You know the elders warn us not to wander too far, especially under the blood moon.”
“I know,” Aria murmured. She remembered the old tales, spoken in hushed tones—of villagers who vanished when the sky turned red. Of monsters that hunted where the shadows thickened. But the fear that should have stopped her only stirred her curiosity more. “I just… feel like it’s calling me.”
Her mother frowned, reaching to smooth a strand of Aria’s hair. “Enough nonsense. Tonight is about you. Forget the forest.”
Aria nodded, forcing a smile, but the pull in her chest only grew. Every beat of her heart seemed to echo from the trees, stronger and stronger, until she could no longer sit still.
As the celebration wound down and her family turned to clean the dishes, she slipped out quietly. The autumn air bit at her cheeks, sharp with the scent of pine. Behind her, laughter still drifted from the cottage, but before her stretched the forest, vast and silent beneath the crimson light of the rising blood moon.
Her feet moved of their own accord, crunching over fallen leaves. Each step drew her deeper into the woods, the voices of her loved ones fading until only the whisper of branches remained. She should have been afraid, but instead she felt a strange familiarity, as though she had walked this path in dreams a hundred times before.
The deeper she went, the heavier the air grew. The shadows thickened, stretching unnaturally long. The forest floor pulsed faintly beneath her boots, each throb in time with her racing heartbeat. Aria pressed a hand to her chest, breath quickening.
Then, ahead, movement stirred.
A figure stepped from the darkness.
He was tall, impossibly elegant, his form cloaked in black that seemed woven from the night itself. His presence swallowed the space around him. And his eyes—glowing like molten rubies—locked onto hers with a force that made her knees tremble.
Aria froze, breath caught in her throat. Fear should have sent her fleeing, yet fascination rooted her in place. He was unlike anything she had ever imagined—terrible, magnetic, undeniable.
“You came,” the stranger said, his voice deep, smooth as silk but edged with steel. His lips curved faintly, as if in satisfaction. “My little flame.”
Her lips parted. “Who… who are you?”
“I am Lucian,” he said, each syllable deliberate, dripping with authority. “King of this realm. The one your blood belongs to.”
Her stomach twisted. Her blood? She stumbled back, shaking her head. “I don’t understand. I’m just—”
“Not just.” His interruption was sharp, yet strangely tender. He stepped closer, and she swore the air itself bent toward him. “Your blood carries the curse, the power, the fate that has slept for centuries. And now…” His eyes flared brighter. “It awakens.”
Panic surged through her. She turned to flee, but invisible threads snapped tight around her body, pulling her back. She struggled, heart hammering. “Let me go!”
Lucian’s smile deepened, his fangs glinting faintly in the moonlight. “Run, if you wish. See how fragile your mortality truly is. But if you stay… you might just survive the night.”
Before she could speak, shadows erupted from the trees. Dozens of figures blurred into existence—pale, swift, their eyes glowing with hunger. Their hisses filled the air as they lunged, fangs bared.
Aria’s scream split the forest. She stumbled, bracing for the impact.
But Lucian moved faster than thought. He raised a hand, shadows coiling like serpents at his command. In a heartbeat, the attackers were scattered, dissolving into smoke that the night swallowed whole.
Silence fell. Only the thundering of her pulse remained.
Lucian turned, his gaze on her again—softer now, though no less piercing. He stepped close enough that she could feel the cold aura radiating from him.
“You belong to this world now, Aria,” he murmured, her name rolling from his tongue like a vow. “And to me.”
Her knees gave way, and she collapsed onto the damp earth. Tears pricked her eyes, but beneath the fear coiled something else. Something forbidden.
The blood moon’s crimson glow bathed her trembling form, its light heavy with promise.
Aria pressed her palms to the soil, struggling to steady her breath. But her body shook, not only from terror—something deeper stirred within her, a fire gnawing at her veins. Visions flashed behind her eyes: crimson skies, fire consuming the world, a throne drenched in blood.
She gasped, clutching her chest. The world tilted.
Lucian’s silhouette remained still, steady, as though he had expected this. “You feel it, don’t you?” he said quietly. “The old power stirring. The bond you cannot sever. Deny it if you wish, little flame, but your blood will not lie.”
Aria wanted to scream at him, deny everything, but the truth burned too deep. Her voice cracked. “Why me? Why now?”
“Because destiny is patient,” he answered, his crimson gaze unwavering. “It waited centuries for the right vessel, the right night, the right moon. And you, Aria… are the answer it chose.”
The blood moon rose higher, draping the forest in crimson fire. Shadows stretched, and somewhere in the distance, wolves howled in unison—a chilling, sacred sound.
And though Aria longed to turn back, she knew, with a shiver of dread and wonder, that the life she had known was gone.
The night of her eighteenth birthday would not be remembered for candles or laughter. It would be remembered as the night destiny claimed her.
