Chapter 3

Jacob's rejection last night left me in nightmares that twisted through my restless sleep, each one a cruel reminder of his harsh words and the shattered pieces of my heart. The morning sun filters through the curtains, casting a golden glow over my room as I rise from the bed, determination setting a steely edge to my jaw. I refuse to let Jacob's rejection break me; instead, it fuels a fire within me to prove him wrong.

I dress quickly, choosing an outfit that reflects the newfound strength simmering beneath my skin. As I make my way downstairs, the pack-house buzzes with its usual energy, whispers and sidelong glances following me as I move through the corridors. But I hold my head high, refusing to cower under the weight of their scrutiny.

Cami finds me in the kitchen, her expression a mixture of concern and unwavering support. “How are you holding up?” she asks quietly, pouring two cups of steaming coffee as she gestures for me to sit at the table.

“I'm fine,” I say, my voice steadier than I expected. “Last night was tough, but I will not let Jacob's rejection define me.”

Cami nods, her eyes filled with understanding. “You're stronger than you think, Alena,” she says, handing me a cup of coffee. “And you have an entire pack behind you, ready to support you no matter what.”

A surge of gratitude fills me as I take a sip of the coffee, its warmth spreading comfort through my veins. Cami's unwavering belief in me is a balm to my wounded heart, a reminder that I am not alone in this battle against Jacob's prejudice.

As we sit in companionable silence, a commotion outside catches our attention. Curious, we exchange a glance before making our way to the front porch, where we find the pack gathered in a semicircle around someone — Jacob.

His posture is rigid, his expression guarded as he addresses the pack, his voice carrying over the heads of the assembled werewolves. “I know my decision last night may have come as a shock to some of you,” Jacob begins, his words measured but tinged with an undercurrent of uncertainty. “But it was a decision that had to be made for the good of our pack.”

Murmurs ripple through the crowd, whispers and sidelong glances exchanged as the pack members digest Jacob’s words. I stand at the edge of the gathering, Cami by my side, watching with a mix of apprehension and curiosity.

Jacob’s gaze flickers in my direction, a moment of tension passing between us before he continues speaking. “Alena’s… differences… make her a liability to our pack,” Jacob says carefully, his eyes scanning the assembled werewolves. “To ensure our safety and prosperity, I had to make the tough choice to reject her as my mate.”

The words hang heavy in the air, a palpable tension settling over the pack as the werewolves exchange uneasy glances, the weight of Jacob's proclamation sinking in. A storm brews in the sky, mirroring the turbulent atmosphere on the ground as emotions churn beneath the surface. I feel a mix of anger and hurt rising within me, but above all, a steely resolve takes hold.

Without thinking, I step forward, drawing the attention of the pack as all eyes turn towards me. “I may be different,” I begin, my voice ringing clear and strong despite the roiling emotions inside me. “But those differences do not define me. They strengthen me, more capable of facing whatever challenges come our way.”

Jacob's jaw tightens at my words, a flicker of something unreadable crossing his features before he schools his expression into one of cold indifference. The pack watches in tense silence, waiting to see how this unexpected defiance will unfold.

“Son, you realize you rejected the strongest wolf in this pack?” Alpha Paul says in my defense.

Jacob's eyes widen in surprise at Alpha Paul's words, a moment of uncertainty flashing across his face before he schools his expression into one of defiance. “I stand by my decision,” Jacob retorts, his voice tinged with stubborn resolve. “Alena's… abilities may be strong, but her unpredictability poses a threat to the pack.”

A low murmur ripples through the assembled werewolves, divided opinions and allegiances clear in their uneasy movements. I meet Jacob's gaze head-on, my resolve unwavering as I speak with unwavering conviction. “My differences are not a weakness, Jacob,” I declare, each word laced with determination. “They are a strength that can be harnessed for the greater good of our pack.”

Alpha Paul steps forward, his presence commanding attention as he addresses the gathered werewolves. “Alena possesses unique abilities,” he begins, his voice carrying the weight of authority. “But I realize her loyalty and strength far outweigh any perceived risks. We are a pack, bound by blood and duty, and it is our diversity that strengthens us.”

A ripple of agreement passes through the pack, murmurs of support rising like a tide in response to Alpha Paul's words. Jacob's expression tightens at the shift in sentiment, his jaw clenched in frustration as he realizes the groundswell of a support building against him.

“I will not let this stand,” Jacob declares, his voice edged with defiance as he takes a step forward, challenging Alpha Paul's authority. “Alena's recklessness puts us all at risk, and I will not allow her to endanger the pack with her unpredictable nature.”

“I hope you know what you are doing, son. Because I won't be here forever.” Alpha Paul says before mind linking me and my parents.

“Meet me in my office in ten minutes.”

“Yes, Alpha,” we all say in union.

As I make my way to Alpha Paul's office alongside my parents, a mix of apprehension and determination swirls within me. The weight of the impending confrontation with Jacob hangs heavy in the air, but I draw strength from the unwavering support of my family by my side. We arrive at the office, the imposing wooden door standing as a barrier between the present and an uncertain future.

Alpha Paul's office is adorned with symbols of leadership and history, each item a testament to the long line of alphas that have guided our pack through trials and triumphs. He sits behind his desk, his gaze steady as he regards us with a mixture of wisdom and resolve.

“Alena, family,” Alpha Paul begins, his voice commanding attention as he gestures for us to take a seat. “I have called you here to address the current situation regarding Jacob's rejection and its implications for our pack.”

“Alena, I know you joined my pack because of your past and as your parents' best friend. I would not turn you away. But, I think it might be a good idea for you to go back home with your parents for a bit.” Alpha Paul sighs as his shoulders drop.

“Has she done something wrong?” Savage exclaims.

Alpha Paul's gaze softens at Savage's question, a somber expression crossing his features as he meets my parents' concerned eyes. “It is not a matter of wrongdoing, but one of safety and unity within the pack,” Alpha Paul explains, his voice grave with the weight of responsibility. “Alena's presence has sparked division and discord among our members, particularly considering Jacob's rejection.”

My parents exchange a worried glance, their concern palpable as they turn to me, seeking reassurance in the face of uncertainty. I meet their gaze with a steely determination, understanding the gravity of Alpha Paul's suggestion and the need for unity within the pack.

“I will go,” I breathe, my voice steady despite the tumult of emotions swirling within me. “If it will help restore peace and stability to the pack, I will do whatever is necessary.”

Alpha Paul nods in acknowledgment of my resolve, his expression reflecting a mix of regret and understanding. “It is not a simple decision, but I believe it is the best course of action for now,” Alpha Paul says, his voice heavy with the weight of leadership. “Alena, your strength and loyalty have never been in question, but the current tensions within the pack demand a temporary separation for the greater good.”

I nod in acceptance of Alpha Paul's decision, a sense of duty and sacrifice settling over me as I prepare to leave the pack once more. My parents stand by my side, their unwavering support a source of comfort in this time of upheaval.

“We will return home with you, Alena,” my mother says, her voice infused with a mix of concern and determination. “We will weather this storm together as a family, no matter what challenges may come our way.”

Tears glisten in my father, Levi’s eyes as he clasps my shoulder in a show of solidarity, his silent strength a beacon of hope in the face of uncertainty. With one last look at Alpha Paul, I walk out of the office, my heart heavy with conflicting emotions. As we make our way back to our home, the familiar sights and scents of the pack territory surround us like a bittersweet embrace. The decision to temporarily leave the pack weighs on me, a sense of longing tugging at my very being.
