Chapter 5

Amelia said coolly, "Don't bother yourself, Ms. Wilson."

Mia was taken aback by Amelia's indifference. She hadn't expected Amelia to be such a tough nut to crack, completely unyielding!

Amelia had no intention of wasting more time with Mia. She needed to check on Nolan's test results and couldn't afford to argue with Mia any longer.

As she turned to leave, Mia grabbed her wrist.

Amelia frowned and said, "Let go."

Mia's lips twisted into a sneer. Instead of letting go, she yanked Amelia towards her!

In an instant, Amelia realized what Mia was up to and swiftly pulled back, using the momentum to push Mia away!

Mia stumbled back a few steps, her anger flaring.

She had planned to fall down the stairs and blame Amelia for pushing her, but Amelia had seen through her scheme and pushed her away instead!

Amelia had already put some distance between them, not giving Mia another chance to make a move.

She stared coldly at Mia and said, "Ms. Wilson, you'd better watch your step. If you fall again, you might not be so lucky."

Mia seethed with hatred.

Ignoring her, Amelia turned and left the stairwell, only to see that the light above the operating room had gone out.

She grew tense and hurried forward. "Doctor, how is my grandfather?"

"Shut up!" Luna, her eyes red, cut her off sharply.

She glared at Amelia, her words harsh. "If it weren't for you, Grandpa wouldn't have fallen. The doctor just said that if his condition doesn't improve, he might never walk again!"

"It's all your fault! You're a curse! You killed your own mother, and now you've hurt my grandfather! You should have been kicked out of the house long ago!"

Amelia's spine trembled. She couldn't believe it.

Nolan had always been in good health. How could a fall leave him unable to stand?

She grabbed the doctor to ask more, but someone yanked her shoulder back.

Matthew's face was cold and stern. "I warned you not to come near Grandpa again."

Amelia, worried about Nolan, was desperate. "It was an accident! How many times do I have to say it for you to believe me?"

"How Nolan fell, you can say whatever you want," a mocking voice interjected. It was Mia.

She gracefully walked over to Matthew, hooking her arm through his, and shot Amelia a smug look.

Matthew frowned and asked quietly, "Why are you here? Didn't I tell you to wait at home?"

"You left in such a hurry, you didn't even take your coat," Mia said softly. "I know you're busy, but you just got over a cold. I was worried about you."

Amelia's eyes grew colder.

These two didn't even try to hide their relationship anymore. Right in front of her, they acted like a loving couple, making her, the legitimate wife, feel like an outsider!

"My husband doesn't need your concern," Amelia said icily, stepping forward and pulling Mia's arm away.

"Ow, that hurts!" Mia cried out, looking pitiful. "I'm sorry, Mrs. Moore. Matthew and I are just friends. Don't misunderstand."

Matthew frowned. He hadn't expected Mia to follow him, but he was more annoyed by Amelia's aggressive stance.

He grabbed Amelia's wrist, forcing her to let go. "That's enough!"

Mia immediately hid behind Matthew, looking frightened.

Amelia's wrist throbbed with pain. She clenched her fingers and looked at Matthew, her words icy. "If you want everyone to know that the Moore family heir is cheating on his wife, go ahead. It'll be your family's reputation on the line."

Matthew's handsome face seemed to freeze over. He had never seen this sharp-tongued side of Amelia.

"I'll handle my own affairs. You don't need to worry. Rhys!"

He called for the driver and ordered, "Take her home. Make sure she doesn't leave Moore Manor without my permission!"

Rhys immediately came over to grab Amelia's arm.

Amelia and Matthew had been married for three years. Rhys knew their relationship, and he also knew about Matthew and Mia. To him, it was only a matter of time before Mia became the new Mrs. Moore.

So, he wanted to make a good impression on the future lady of the house.

But he underestimated Amelia!

"I'm Mrs. Moore. Take your hand off me!"

Amelia's words were like an electric shock. Rhys's hand sprang back.

Yes, no matter what the future held, Amelia was still Matthew's wife right now! How could he, a mere driver, overstep his bounds?

Matthew's brows furrowed, his eyes smoldering with anger, silently questioning: What are you trying to do?

"Matthew, don't be mad. Mrs. Moore and I just had a misunderstanding. Don't scold her. I'm fine! We can talk things out."

Mia's words sounded so considerate, but each one dripped with two-faced intent.

What "I'm fine"—wasn't she just showing how magnanimous she was? What "talk things out"—wasn't she hinting that Amelia didn't want a divorce and should be slowly tortured?

Nolan was still in the hospital. Amelia shouldn't have been able to laugh, but she couldn't help the mocking smile that curved her lips.

"Tell me how Grandpa is, and I'll leave."

Amelia didn't want to watch Mia and Matthew flaunt their relationship any longer.

"Grandpa is out of danger. Disappointed?" Matthew's words were as cold and sharp as his gaze.

Since Matthew believed she had pushed Nolan, Amelia saw no point in further explaining.

Nolan would clear her name when he woke up.

"If I really pushed Grandpa, then may I die a horrible death!"

With that, Amelia turned to leave.

"Take her home!" Matthew ordered Rhys.

Amelia's cold voice responded.

"No need! Let your driver take Ms. Wilson. I know the way home!"

Amelia emphasized "home," and Mia's eyes flashed with barely concealed jealousy.

Despite Matthew's assurance that Nolan was out of danger, Amelia waited downstairs for the attending doctor. She needed to be sure Nolan was no longer in critical condition, just temporarily unconscious and expected to recover.

Only then did Amelia leave for Moore Manor.
