Chapter 80

I took Victor's advice. The following day when I got to school and found Amy outside waiting for me, I asked her not to text for a few minutes.

She looked more grown up than ever with her light blonde hair styled in a twisted bun at the back of her neck, and she was wearing mascara and eyeliner that made her chocolate brown eyes look even prettier.

“What’s up?” she asked.

“I don’t want to sound like a jerk,” I began. “But I feel like you don’t want me around anymore because of Justin. Doesn’t he want you to have friends?”

I knew from watching talk shows that a guy isolating his girlfriend is one of the signs of an abusive mate.

“We never talk about our friends much,” Amy replied. “I’ve mentioned you. He knows you’re an Alpha and that I went to your ball. But we don’t talk about you much.”

“What do you talk about?” I asked.

Amy shrugged. “I don’t know. What we want to do with our lives and stuff.”

“Please try to understand, Amy. I want you to be happy. I want you to be with a guy that you love. But I feel left out of your life anymore.”

“I can see why you would feel that way, Daisy. And I’m sorry, but I’ve been so blissfully happy that I’ve forgotten everything else.”

“How can you forget about your best friend?” I mumbled. “When you weren’t invited to my ball, I threatened Alex and Victor with not showing up either. And I meant it.”

Amy looked at the ground for a minute. “Okay, it’s time to be honest with you. Justin is like you used to be: he doesn’t like Alphas. He thinks they’re greedy and power-hungry.”

“I understand how he feels,” I said. “I still feel that way about most Alphas.”

“Sweetie, you’re not getting it,” Amy said with a pained expression. “You are an Alpha.”

“Do you mean he doesn’t approve of you being friends with me?”

Amy shrugged again.

I couldn’t believe this was happening. I could lose my best friend because of who my family is. Yet, I understood Justin’s feelings. Many of his views were mine.

“Would it help if he met me? I’d like to have the chance to tell him about my plans to use my wealth and influence to help Betas and Omegas. I have lived their life and know how unfair it is.”

“That’s a great idea!” Amy exclaimed. “He needs to get to know you, and he’ll see that you are different from other Alphas.”

And I needed to know more about him. I wouldn’t rest easy until I was sure he was the type of guy that wouldn’t hurt or use my friend.

“Amy, all I know about Justin is that he’s a Beta. Where did he go to school?”

“He attends the city college,” she said. “He’s in his second year, and he’s majoring in business to please his father. But he’s taking art history classes too.”

“What’s his family like?”

“He told me his dad runs a business. I think it’s sort of like my dad’s. Justin met my dad, and he likes him. Dad was afraid I would come home with one of the Alphas from your ball.”

“Then I’m glad that didn’t happen. But back to Justin. He’s older than you, right?”

If Justin was in his second year of college, he had to be at least nineteen or twenty.

“Yeah, that’s why I started wearing my hair up and stuff.” Amy blushed a little. “I don’t want him to think of me as just a kid.”

“He’s not that much older than you.” I giggled. “And he sounds great, but let’s try to set something up so I can meet him. It would make things easier for us.”

“I want you to meet him,” Amy said and linked arms with me. “I want him to like you, Daisy. The next time he asks me out, maybe you could meet us somewhere for a soda or something.”

“That sounds great,” I said.

“Just be on your best behavior, and don’t act like a spoiled, rich Alpha.” Amy giggled.

“I’ll wear my jeans with all the holes in them and my old sneakers that are falling apart, and I’ll make him pay for my soda, okay?” I teased.

“Aww, thanks. You’re the best,” Amy said, and we giggled all the way into the school.

Later, when I got to the cafeteria at lunchtime, Amy was losing it. She was so excited.

“Justin just sent me a text. He wants to go out with me Friday night.”

The way Amy was practically jumping up and down made me smile. She was definitely falling in love with Justin.

“Did you ask him about meeting me?” I asked.

“Yeah,” she replied. “And he said he would. He wants you to meet us at the soda shop down the street from my dad’s restaurant.”

“That sounds great, Amy. I’ll be there.”

“Don’t forget to wear your holey jeans and your oldest sneakers,” Amy reminded me.

It looked like things would work out with Justin, and I was ecstatic. Amy meant too much to me. I couldn’t lose her now.

But a few minutes later, I got a text from Jennifer, reminding me I had a fitting after school for my mother’s ball gown that I found in the attic.

“Please come straight home from school today. If you’re going to wear your mother’s gown to the ball, it needs to be tailored to fit better,” she wrote.

I read the rest of the message out loud. “The seamstress will be here at four o’clock.”

“What seamstress?” Amy asked.

“The one that’s coming to my house after school to make sure my mother’s ball gown fits me,” I replied. “I told you about finding the gown my mother wore for the ballroom portrait, didn’t I?”

“Yeah, that gown looks awesome in the painting. I want to see it on you.”

“I’ll have Jennifer snap a picture for you before I leave for the ball.”

“Ah, the life of an Alpha,” Amy teased. “What fancy ball are you going to attend with hunky Victor this time?”

“I’m not sure.” I had so many social events scheduled in the next few months that I put them in my phone so I wouldn’t forget any of them.

But after checking the calendar on my phone, I felt like crying.

I couldn’t believe I had forgotten and made plans with Amy that night. There was no way I could get out of going to this ball.

“I’m sorry, Amy. I can’t meet you and Justin Friday night. I really want to, but I have to go to a ball celebrating the thirtieth anniversary of some friends of Alex and Victor that night.”

I hated the disappointed look on my friend’s face. I had let her down.

“I really want to meet Justin, but I can’t get out of going to this ball.”

“It’s okay,” Amy said, but I could tell by the way her eyes wouldn’t meet mine that she was hurt. “You already had plans.”

I felt terrible. I was the one who had been complaining about us not spending time together anymore, yet I was the one who constantly had plans with other people.

She took her phone out of her pocket and started texting. “I’ll tell Justin that you’ll meet him next time. But I won’t tell him why you can’t meet us this Friday.”

Amy spent most of our lunchtime texting with Justin. I didn’t say a word about it, but I told myself I needed to check out Justin as soon as I could.
