Chapter 65

William and Victor’s wolves growled menacingly at each other. The rivalry between the two Alpha wolves felt like sparks flying through the air.

They growled louder, bared their teeth, and circled each other as if looking for the opportunity to attack.

I held my breath as I waited for them to break into combat. I couldn’t stand knowing that they were fighting about me.

What did they think fighting each other would accomplish?

When the growling advanced to intense snarls, Diana and I yelled, “Both of you, stop fighting right this minute.”

“How dare either of you think something that will affect the rest of my life could be settled with your teeth?”

The two wolves immediately separated and sat back on their haunches. But they both still had their ears flattened against their heads, and the tip of William’s tail twitched in agitation.

“That’s better,” I told them. “Now listen to me; I will choose my mate. I won’t be fought over like I’m a carnival prize.”

Victor’s wolf Adam began to argue, “But Daisy ….”

“No buts,” I said. “We need to figure out what is going on here. This is no time to fight.”

“Daisy, I can hear you too,” William said. “My wolf wants to speak to yours. His name is Mark.”

“Hello, Mark,” Diana said. “My name is Diana. It is nice to meet you, but let us first figure out what’s happening before we become acquainted. This is a most unusual situation.”

William’s shaggy head nodded in agreement. “You are correct.”

Alex approached the three of us. Benson was directly behind him. He had several robes in his hands.

“Benson will place the robes in the rose garden,” Alex said. “The three of you need to shift back into human form, and we will talk.”

The room exploded into conversation. Nobody understood what was going on. But there were all kinds of theories being discussed.

“There is no double mate bond,” an older Alpha female declared. “I’ve never heard of such a thing.”

“Betas raised Alex’s daughter,” her companion added. “She is probably confused and doesn’t understand a mate bond.”

“Perhaps she’s just doing it for attention,” the first woman added.

I wanted to point out that their theory didn’t explain Victor and William’s reactions.

All three of us couldn’t be mistaken or confused. But the Alphas saying these things were interested in gossip, not facts.

Other people claimed they had heard of a double mate bond, but it was extremely rare, and of course, it never happened to a she-wolf.

Most of the guests listened to the different opinions of the louder guests and spread them to others.

Soon the whole room was abuzz. It was the best night of gossip for them in years. It made me want to growl and snarl too.

But I sort of understood their excitement and confusion. How could I have two Fated Mates when these days, most wolves spend their lives without finding just one?

It was becoming tiring that every one of my life events was more complicated than they were for everyone else. Why couldn’t any part of my life be normal?

“Diana, do you understand what is happening to us?” I asked as we went outside to find one of the robes Benson had left in the garden.

“No, I don’t understand it at all,” she replied. “I don’t know how it can be happening. Yet, I feel a strong pull toward both of those males. It is strange.”

I found one of the robes Benson had draped over a rose bush. I could still smell his scent from where his hands had touched the robe.

But I was reluctant to change back into my human body. The world of the wolf was fascinating, and I was nowhere near finished exploring it.

It was a more simple and less complicated way to live than my human life had been.

Out here, under the night sky, I felt at peace and at one with the universe.

I wanted to rush back out to the field and the woods and run free until dawn.

I felt like a child that had been given a magnificent gift, and now that gift was being taken away from me after I had played with it for only a few minutes.

“Diana, will I still hear you when I’m in my human form?”

“I will always hear you whenever you want or need me,” she replied.

“I’m glad,” I told her. “You give me strength and courage.”

I stood for a moment, unsure of what to do.

“All you need to do to regain your human form is wish it to be,” Diana explained. “Envision your human self and let the change happen.”

I hesitated. The urge to turn and run away was strong. The fighting, the gossiping, and the confusion were a terrible letdown after the wonderment of my first shift.

“Don’t worry, Daisy. I will still be with you. And you will be able to return to your wolf form at will. We will run through the night again soon.”

I did as she said. I pictured my human self in my mind, and my skin, flesh, and bones instantly responded to the request. In a microsecond, I was human again.

I picked up the robe and wrapped it around myself before walking back to the ballroom.

The room was still buzzing with chatter about what had happened. The sound annoyed me. Why won’t they go home?

What was happening to me was none of their business. I bit my lip to stifle the urge to scream; just leave at them all!

Thank the Moon Goddess, Amy had left before midnight. I wouldn’t want her to witness this drama.

William and Victor entered the ballroom from the glass doors. They were also wrapped in robes. They saw me and hurried to my side.

They were much more composed than their wolves, I must say.

Wolves tended to follow their instinct, but things between the three of us are much more complicated than natural mate bonds.

“Daisy,” they said in unison before giving each other a glare. Maybe their wolves were struggling to surface again.

“Do not start fighting again,” I told their wolves. “It will only make things worse. I don’t understand any of this either. Neither does my wolf, Diana.”

“It must be some kind of mistake, I’m…” Victor could not tell our fake engagement thing in front of everyone. “...fond of you, but I can’t be …. one of your Fated Mates. And I don’t mean to fight with William. It was just my wolf Adam…”

Even Victor did not know how to handle the current situation.

He probably did not want this to happen. He wanted to be a single Alpha billionaire leader.

William glanced at him, probably also choosing the right words to say. “Daisy has been my good friend, but I’ve never had strange feelings like this before around anyone. My wolf is in utter turmoil.”

The ball guests gathered around us and tried to listen to every word we said.

Their attention started to make me feel uncomfortable again.

But Victor and William didn’t seem to notice anyone except the three of us. They stared at me and glared at each other.

“Please, Alex,” I pleaded. “I feel like I’m the star attraction in a freak show. Why can’t the guests leave us in peace now to figure out this mess?”

Then Alex took charge. “The ball is over,” he declared. “My daughter needs privacy so we can sort this out.”

When only a few people started for the door, Benson and two of the footmen appeared behind my father.

“Please, everyone, Mr. Wilson told you it is time to go home,” Benson said firmly. “You must respect his wishes and leave his home. The ball is over!”

Finally, a few at a time, they started leaving. After a few minutes, only Alex, Victor, William, and I were left standing in the ballroom.

“Shall we go somewhere more comfortable to talk?” Alex said and led us down the long hallway to the living room.
