Chapter 51

I enjoyed the shocked expression on Jenna’s face. With her eyes narrowed, she stepped back and looked me over carefully.

But then, the reality of the situation seemed to sink in for her. “Hello, Daisy,” she said stiffly.

“Hello, Jenna. It’s nice to meet you.” I knew my words didn’t sound sincere, but I couldn’t help it. The way this woman acted made me angry.

Fortunately, Victor led me away from her and helped me into the Lamborghini.

Once again, words came from my mouth that I couldn’t stop. “Is … is she your girlfriend?”

“No,” Victor replied. “ I’m not dating anyone right now.”

But I couldn’t get the image of Jenna flirting with him as they ate at the restaurant.

“Was she your girlfriend?” I asked.

“I’ve never had a steady girlfriend,” Victor told me. “And ever since I met you, I haven’t had the time to date or go out partying at all.”

“I’m sorry if I’m keeping you from your social life,” I said.

“The clubs will still be there when I get around to going out again,” Victor said.“I’ve enjoyed helping you and spending time with you. So don’t be sorry, Daisy.”

“Why would you rather spend time with me?” I asked.

Victor concentrated on the road and didn’t answer. So I repeated my question. But he was saved from answering by an animal running across the street in front of the car.

I sat back and tried to enjoy the rest of the drive home. But his words about preferring to spend time with me stuck at the back of my mind. It made me feel happy and a little confused.

When we arrived at my home, Victor rushed me inside, and he took the shoebox from me. “I was thinking on the way home that we should do something different tonight.”

“I was inspired when you were trying on the shoes,” he said. “You don’t have any experience with high heels, do you?”

“I’ve never had a pair of shoes with heels this high before,” I replied, trying to keep up with him. “I’m more of a sneakers kind of girl.”

“That’s what I thought.” Victor stopped at the entrance to the ballroom and took one of the golden high heels from the box. “You need to learn to dance in heels.”

I froze as panic swelled in my chest and spread throughout my body. My heart rate accelerated, and my hands began to shake. It was something I hadn’t thought of.

I wasn’t sure how well I could walk in them. How was I going to dance in them? “I am going to make a fool of myself at the ball. I just know it,” I mumbled.

“No, you’re not,” Victor said. “You’re going to learn to balance yourself in them right now.” He pulled me into the ballroom and handed me the golden high heels. “Put them on.”

I hurried to a chair and slipped the golden shoes on my feet. They looked strange with my jeans, but Victor didn’t say I had to change. Then I stood.

Standing in the shoes, I swayed precariously. “I don’t know about this. Are you sure I can’t wear my sneakers under that long gown?”

“No sneakers,” Victor growled and moved closer and held out his arms to me. “Walk toward me. I’ll catch you if you fall, so don’t psych yourself out. You can do this.”

I walked several steps to Victor without any problem. Then he turned and began walking towards the middle of the ballroom.

When I tried to follow him, my right ankle turned, and I started to fall. But Victor caught me by my elbow.

“This is harder than I thought,” I said. “Maybe I can’t do it.”

“Don’t be silly,” Victor said. ”Millions of women wear high heels every day. They can’t be that hard to walk in.”

“How do you know? Have you ever worn them?” I stifled a giggle when I realized what I had asked.

“They don’t come in my size,” Victor replied with a grin. He took my hand. “Let’s walk around the edge of the ballroom.”

After a few times around the dance floor, it became easier. I could walk pretty steadily without clinging to Victor’s hand. Finally, he declared I was ready to dance.

We started with a slow waltz without music. When I did well for several turns around the floor, Victor decided to try it at regular speed to music.

It started great, and I was gaining confidence. But on the fifth time around the floor, I stumbled and almost fell to my knees. Victor caught me, and we started again.

After fifteen minutes went by, I was still on my feet. “Good job,” Victor said and changed the music to a foxtrot.

I had a little trouble with this dance and began exaggerating my movements as a joke. But the prank backfired, and I ended up on the floor.

“You let me fall,” I accused, even though I knew I deserved it.

“Are you ready to be serious again?” Victor asked. I could tell he was feeling as silly as me.

“Absolutely,” I said with a giggle.

He started the music again, and we finished the song without any disasters. So we moved on to my favorite dance, the tango.

It only took a few seconds for me to get lost in the music and the romance of the dance.

Nothing else existed for me except for Victor and the music.

And then it happened. I stepped on his foot with the high-heeled shoe. It knocked me off balance, and Victor tried to catch me, but he couldn’t because I was still standing on his foot.

We both landed on the floor with Victor half on top of me.

“Why did I say I enjoy spending time with you?” he said.

We were silent for several seconds, and then I started laughing so hard I couldn’t breathe. Victor joined in, and soon we were howling with laughter and rolling around on the floor.

We ended up lying side-by-side. His hand moved to my hip and pulled me closer as he looked into my eyes.

His hand moved higher, roaming up my side. His hand then brushed my shoulder, and he caressed my cheek with one finger.

My whole body tingled at the sensation of his finger.

Victor pulled me closer, and I could feel his breath on my face. I couldn’t breathe at all.

Suddenly, my phone rang.

But Victor bolted to his feet. “You should answer your phone,” he said.

I took the phone from my pocket and looked at the screen. “It’s William,” I said.

“You should answer it.” Victor turned away from me. “And I’ll give you some privacy to talk.” And he walked across the ballroom.
