Chapter 339

Victor’s POV

“Daisy, fighting this will just make it worse and keep it alive longer,” I explained. “People are going to believe what they want no matter what we say.”

“You are underestimating the situation,” she argued. “We need to do something. I can’t even turn my phone on without getting nasty prank calls, and somebody roasted my car!”

I tried to put my arms around her, but she pulled away from me. “Sweetheart, giving it air will keep it going.”

“You’re going to wait until it’s too late,” Daisy said, her eyes flashing with anger. “Are you paying attention to what’s happening to us?”

She turned and put her hands on my chest. “They want to take the leadership away from you. They hound me wherever I go and on TV and in the newspapers. We must do something!”

Her incredible green eyes pleaded with mine, and I knew I’d lost the argument.

But perhaps she was right.

I kissed her and headed for the door.

“Where are you going?” she called after me.

“I need to think,” I replied and went out the door.

After hurrying to the rear of the estate, I stripped and shifted. I needed to run.

The grass was wet from the rain that afternoon. It made the tall grass slippery beneath my feet. But Adam and I ran flat out, enjoying the freedom of motion. I needed time to not think and clear my head before deciding what to do.

The sun had set by the time I reached the top of the hill for the third time, yet I knew I wasn’t alone. I sensed Diana and Daisy nearby.

I caught a whiff of her scent and scanned the field for her.

There was movement near the tree line. Was she going into the woods?

I followed her to the small clearing. The moon had risen enough that I saw her shift human and beckon to me with her arms.

Her invitation was irresistible.

Running to her side, I shifted human, and our mouths met with a fiery urgency that made my body instantly respond.

My hands roamed over her soft skin and firm, toned curves. Her amazing body responded to my touch, and I reveled in her moans of delight.

After lowering her gently to the ground, the soft grass became our bed. I couldn’t resist tasting her. She was sweeter than honey, and her essence drove me mad.

I was more than ready to take her when I sensed she was prepared for me to join my body to hers.

As I entered her warm, moist womanhood, her moan of ecstasy almost made me lose control. But I grit my teeth and moved slowly and deliberately until I sensed her need for more.

Then I raised her legs onto my shoulders and looked into her eyes as I moved my hips with more speed and urgency.

“Yes, my darling,” she moaned as the pinnacle of passion was near. “Love me.”

Her plea spurred me to move faster until we reached climax together.

After the last of our pleasure faded, I lay on the grass next to this amazing woman, feeling lucky she was my mate.

Daisy is more than beautiful. She’s kind and exceedingly intelligent. I should take her advice more often. This was one of those times.

I kissed her sweet lips and sat up. “Let’s run back to the mansion together. I’m returning to The Association immediately and calling an emergency council meeting.”

“What are you going to tell them?” Daisy asked.

“I want to discuss ways to solve the problem,” I explained. “I believe this is another coup to take over our government.”

Daisy’s eyes now looked frightened. “Who do you believe is behind it?”

“I’m not sure,” I admitted. “But Jayden is getting close. Phil Harter was hired by text to take the photos of us at New Ripon. He’s tracking down the number.”

Daisy and I shifted and returned to the mansion. I changed into clean clothes before kissing her goodbye.

“I’ll be back as soon as possible, my love,” I said. “Try to get some rest. You are safe here.”

She buried her face in my shoulder. “Come back to me soon. I feel the safest when I’m with you.”

I kissed her again and left.

The twelve council members were displeased to be pulled away from their evenings at home or on the town.

“Victor, why have you called us here tonight?” Councilman Getty asked. “Is there an emergency we don’t know about?”

“I take it you didn’t watch the news this evening,” Councilman Hughes said. “Protesters are calling for the ouster of our new leader.”

“That didn’t take long,” Councilman Getty quipped. “I knew the new laws would bring trouble.”

“That’s because the Alphas in our society are incredibly spoiled,” Councilwoman Estes said. “They enjoy their privileges and want nobody else to have any. It’s ridiculous.”

“But what is the answer to this dilemma?” Councilwoman Chen asked. “This kind of civil unrest will create more problems.”

“We should vote on reversing the new laws,” Councilman Dahl suggested.

“No, the laws are important to the majority of citizens in our world,” I argued. “They must take effect as planned.”

“We will vote on it,” Councilman Getty declared. “All in favor of repealing the new college admissions laws, raise your hand.”

Half of the council raised their hands. It was a crushing blow, but not enough to stop the new laws.

“The vote is tied. Since the leader would be the tiebreaker, can I assume you vote against repealing the laws, Victor?” Councilman Getty asked.

“Yes,” I replied. “As I’ve stated, it is time we rule this world for everyone's benefit, not just for the Alphas. There are bright minds being wasted because of who gave birth to them.”

“The cure for many diseases could be locked inside the mind of a Beta or Omega because they can’t get the good education needed to realize their full potential.”

“If Alphas can’t stay on top because the playing field is level for the first time, we didn’t deserve to be there in the first place.”

“I have always been proud to be an Alpha,” I continued. “But seeing the response to the new laws, I am appalled by Alpha's behavior.”

“You don’t understand the importance of tradition,” a red-faced Councilman Getty argued. “If it weren’t for tradition, you wouldn’t be the leader now.”

“That’s true,” I admitted. “However, I am the leader of The United Association of Alphas. And I declare that the Alphas in our society who want to keep us stuck in the past will not succeed.”

There was a smattering of applause. But it was apparent Councilman Getty and Dahl had been angered by my words.

The other ten councilors were calm and appeared to be weighing my words. I decided to tell them my plans.

“I believe someone who wants my position as leader or wants control of this council is behind the bad press regarding me, my fiancée, and the new laws.”

“I am taking steps to unmask this person or persons and reverse the damage they have done,” I announced. “I appreciate your patience and any suggestions you may have to accomplish these goals.”

“I propose we give Victor six weeks to quiet the rebellion and restore the honor of The Association,” Councilwoman Estes said. “We will aid him in this endeavor however necessary.”

“All in agreement of this proposal, raise your hand,” Councilman Getty said.

All councilors except Getty and Dahl raised their hands.

“The proposal passes,” Councilor Getty grumbled. “You have six weeks, Victor. Fix your mess, or we will request your resignation.”

I called Jayden on my way home. I told him about the meeting and that I had six weeks to uncover the culprits behind the coup.

“I’ll work on nothing else, my friend,” Jayden said. “We will fix this, Victor.”

“I hope so,” I said. “Evil can’t be allowed to succeed. If the coup is successful, it will be the end of our world as we know it.”

“I believe you are right,” Jayden said. “Whoever they are, they spent time and money to cover their tracks. This is no amateurish attempt to seize power.”

“Let’s talk more tomorrow,” I said. “I must go home and tell Daisy the results of the meeting.”

“She’s smart and tougher than you think, Victor,” Jayden said. “She’ll get through this.”

“I agree, but I wish we could live in peace for a while,” I said. “So much has happened to her since I’ve known her. A weaker person would be broken.”

We disconnected, and I thought about what I must tell my love.

Daisy and I must work together and ask others for help to solve this problem. I needed her wisdom and strength, and she needed mine.

If we failed to stop the coup, our lives would never be the same.
