Chapter 158

Victor didn’t see me approach the table until I stood right beside him.

I seethed when I saw the woman sitting next to him was even more beautiful up close. She had long, gorgeous, copper-colored hair, deep blue eyes, and huge breasts that she showed off in a severely low-cut and clingy royal blue dress.

She was older than Victor, in her early thirties, and diamonds glittered in her ears and at her throat. She was the type of Alpha I disliked the most.

Anger flashed through me again when she laid a well-manicured hand on Victor’s bicep once more while laughing at something he said.

“That must have been some meeting,” I said, doing my best to control my temper.

I took several deep breaths and forced myself to think about something pleasant. I didn’t want to make a scene, but I had to tell Victor I caught him being his old playboy self again.

But then Victor looked up at me and smiled! My hands balled into fists at my sides, and my heart raced. Did he have no shame!

“Everyone, I would like to introduce my fiancée, Daisy Wilson, “ he said, making my mouth drop open in surprise.

I was speechless as he recited the names of the seven people at the table with him. The only name that stuck in my mind was Trina, the sexy redhead.

Two of the men asked me about Alex.

“He’s doing well,” I mumbled while staring at the woman’s cleavage. I’d never seen anyone show that much of her breasts in public.

I didn’t see William approaching us until he was beside me. “Hey, Victor,” he said.

“Hello, William,” Victor said. “How’s the team doing? Are you ready for the playoffs?”

“We are as ready as we can be,” William replied. “We have a good chance of being the district champions this year.”

“Mostly due to you,” Victor said. “How could he act so naturally after I caught him flirting? My blood was rushing through my veins so loudly that I missed some of the conversation.

“I’ve seen you play, William,” the man sitting across from the redhead said. “You’re an excellent player …a natural. You’re bound to go far.”

“Thank you, Mr. Cabot,” William replied. “I enjoy playing.”

I stood there, still glaring at Victor and the redhead.

Victor got to his feet. “Let me walk you and Daisy out. I’ll be back in a few minutes,” he told the others.

When we got outside, Victor asked him if he could speak to me for a moment alone.

“Sure,” William agreed and strolled up the sidewalk toward his Mustang.

“That was a nice display of jealousy,” Victor said as soon as William was out of earshot. “I’m flattered.”

“I wasn’t jealous,” I argued.

“Good. You have no reason to be,” Victor countered.

“Well, I’m not,” I insisted. “But you were the one so worried about photographers getting pictures of me and William, but you can flirt with that redhead in public. How is that fair?”

Victor shook his head. “You’re jealous.”

“Stop saying that,” I snapped. “It’s just that I have my pride too. Everyone thinks we’re engaged, remember? And there you were drooling over that … that….”

Victor finished my sentence. “My potential client’s wife.”

I gave him a sideways look. Was he telling the truth?

“Her husband was the man sitting across the table from her,” he said. “If you don’t believe me, we can go back, and you can ask them.” He motioned to the restaurant entrance. “Let’s go back in there.”

My temper cooled, but I didn’t know what to think. Why would a married woman sit there and flirt with another man?

“Doesn’t her husband mind when she flirts with somebody else?” I asked.

“He’s proud of her,” Victor replied with a shrug. “She was only talking to me.”

“And touching your arm,” I said with an eye roll.

Victor grinned. “You are jealous.”

I turned around to keep him from seeing I was blushing. I couldn’t be jealous. Victor and I are just friends.

Maybe I felt possessive of him because of all the time we spent together. I needed to think about it, and I couldn’t right now in front of Victor.

“Daisy, I was just talking to her. Did you see me do anything wrong?” Victor said gently.

I silently shook my head.

Victor took my hand. “The first thing I saw when I walked into the restaurant was you having dinner with William. I didn’t rush over to you in a temper.”

“I did that, didn’t I,” I mumbled and turned around to face him. “But it wasn’t because I was jealous. I don’t want anybody to think my fiancé is fooling around on me.”

“I have my pride, too,” I added. “After the engagement is over, you can flirt or whatever with anyone you want.”

“Fair enough,” Victor agreed. “I won’t let Trina touch my arm again.”

“And I will be on my best behavior at the lake on Sunday with William,” I said.

“Have a good time,” Victor said. “Just be mindful of photographers, and call me when you get home.”

“Fair enough,” I said, throwing his words back at him. “And please don’t let me see any photos of you and the red-headed cleavage queen in the papers either.”

Victor chuckled. “Good night, Daisy. Sleep well.”

“Good night,” I said and walked away from him and up the sidewalk to William.

My feelings were confusing me. What was I feeling? When I saw Trina touching Victor, I felt blazing anger.

But it was more than that. The anger was tinged with other emotions that I’d never felt before, and none of them felt good.

Was the man across the table from Trina her husband?

William opened the car door for me, and I entered the passenger seat.

“Is everything okay?” William asked as he slid behind the steering wheel.

“Did you notice the redhead sitting next to Victor?” I asked.

“Yeah. She’s Mr. Cabot’s wife,” William replied.

Victor was telling the truth. Still, the expression on his face when he looked at Trina was infuriating. He is such a dog. And a … a player.

Thank the Goddess, we are just good friends. I wouldn’t want to be his real fiancée. Any woman who fell for Victor Klein would get hurt for sure.

But I was getting too attached to Victor. Maybe it would be best if we spent some time apart. The trip to the lake with William was coming at a good time.

I would text Victor tomorrow and tell him I was too tired to go to the party we planned on attending tomorrow night.

William started the Mustang’s engine and looked at me. “Daisy, were you jealous of Trina Cabot talking to Victor?

“No,” I answered. “I didn’t like it for the same reason that he wants us to be careful not to do anything that could be misinterpreted and splashed across the newspapers.”

“It would be humiliating to have people think my fiancé was cheating on me,” I insisted.

He pulled away from the curb. “Are you sure that's all?”

“Positive,” I replied. “But do you think she’s pretty?” I couldn’t believe those words came out of my mouth.

“She’s attractive, but she’s not my type,” William answered. “She’s too flashy. And I would be jealous if my mate showed that much of herself and flirted with other men.”

“Does she cheat on him?”

“No. Mr. Cabot is a great guy,” William said. “They have a good marriage with three kids. I guess he understands and loves her enough to let her be herself.”

“Well, I don’t understand her,” I mumbled to myself.

I caught William watching me at a red light and decided to change the subject.

“What should I wear to the lake on Sunday?” I asked.

“Something comfortable,” William replied. “And bring a jacket in case it gets cool. I thought we’d go out in the boat again after we eat.”

“That sounds fun,” I said. “ I can’t wait to get there. What time are you picking me up?”

“We want to be on the road early, “William said. “Is seven too early?”

“Seven sounds wonderful!” I replied. “I’ll be ready.”
