Chapter 129
I didn’t want to visit Justin and be the cause of him breaking my best friend’s heart. But how could I allow him to keep lying to her?
Why would he want her to think he was a Beta instead of an Alpha unless he was trying to fit in and use her?
I cringed when I met Amy outside the school, and she asked me what I had wanted to talk about the previous evening.
I couldn’t tell her I was going to visit her lying boyfriend to get him to confess to her he was an Alpha.
It felt kind of wrong to interfere this way. But I love Amy and can’t stand the thought of her being used.
“I had a fight with Victor, and I needed to talk about it,” I replied. It was the truth, just not the whole truth.
“Are you sure?” Amy asked. “It sounded like something worse was going on than you guys fighting again.”
“Yeah, everything’s okay,” I said, feeling guilty for not telling her I was checking out her boyfriend that afternoon. But it was for her own good.
The bell rang before I had to say anything else, and we made our way inside the school.
I got to werewolf history class before William and sat in my usual seat. He grinned when he walked into the room and sat next to me.
“I brought some stuff we can study at lunch if you don’t mind me sitting with you and your friend,” he said.
“Not at all,” I said. “That would be great. I need to keep learning so I can pass that test.”
So at lunch, Amy texted Justin while William explained how to overhaul a business model.
As we sat close together in the cafeteria, I noticed a few odd looks from other students. But I didn’t think much about it. People stare at me a lot these days.
After my next class, Victor was waiting for me outside the gate.
“Amy’s boyfriend should be at his apartment now,” Victor said. “But if he’s not, we’ll go to your office and work for a while and then try again.”
“Good,” I said. “I can’t stand going another day without confronting him.”
Victor pulled away from the curb. “Okay, but here’s a little advice. Your goal is for him to tell Amy the truth. Don’t attack him and scare him into ghosting her. If he disappears from her life without an explanation, she will be devastated.”
“You’re right,” I admitted. “But it’s going to be hard to control my anger at him.”
“Keep in mind while you are speaking to him that Amy loves him,” Victor said. “You want to make things better for her, not worse.”
“I’ll do my best.” But it was going to be hard.
Victor drove to a street two blocks from the main campus, where he parked in front of a small apartment building.
“Is this it?” I asked. The building didn’t look expensive. His parents had enough money to buy him the whole building.
“He lives on the third floor,” Victor replied.
We climbed out of the car and went inside the building. Instead of taking the dilapidated elevator, we opted for the stairs.
The stairwell, like most of the building, was clean, but the paint was peeling from the walls. We found apartment 3C and knocked on the door.
Justin answered quickly, but when he saw me, he tried to shut the door. But Victor stopped it from closing with his foot.
“We just want to talk to you,” he said. “Please, let us in.”
Justin threw up his hands. “I guess I don’t have a choice.” He opened the door wide and motioned us inside the apartment.
“I guess you’re gonna tell Amy I’m an Alpha,” he said. “I was surprised you didn’t tell her already.”
“I want to know why you didn’t tell her,” I snapped.
Victor took my hand, and we followed Justin into a small living room.
The apartment was tiny but lovely. We sat on a velvet loveseat and waited for Justin to sit down.
He settled into a reclining chair. “You knew who I was at Trey’s party. Why didn’t you tell Amy what you know about me then?”
“What I want to know is why you haven’t told her the truth about you,” I said.
Justin ran a hand through his tawny hair. “ Why does it matter to anybody whether I am an Alpha, a Beta, or an Omega? The whole class system in our society sucks.”
“I agree with you,” I said. “But that doesn’t excuse the fact that you lied and are continuing to lie to my best friend.”
“Miss Wilson, my family, including my aunts, uncles, and cousins, all hate Betas because my grandfather got into an argument with his gardener and was murdered.”
I nodded. “It’s not right to blame an entire group of people over the actions of one or a few, but I know it happens a lot.”
“Do you plan on ever telling Amy the truth?” Victor asked. “You can’t hide it forever. She will find out someday.”
Justin shrugged, but he looked frightened. “You know how she feels about Alphas. How do I tell her I’m one of them?”
“Amy and I have been friends for a long time,” I said. “When our friendship began, we thought I was a Beta. She didn’t dump me when we found out I was born an Alpha.”
“That was different,” Justin argued. “You didn’t know you were an Alpha. I do.”
“She isn’t going to like that you lied to her,” I admitted. “But you have to tell her the truth soon. The longer you wait to tell her, the worse it will be.”
“I don’t wanna lose her,” Justin said. “She’s like no other girl I’ve ever met.”
I was beginning to soften toward Justin. Yeah, he lied to Amy, but it looks like he cares for her as much as she does him.
“You know her. How do I tell her the truth?” Justin asked.
“Do you want me to be there when you tell her?”
Justin shrugged again. “I don’t know. Can I think about it? I don’t want to lose her, but you’re right; she needs to know the truth.”
“I’m tired of the situation,” Justin added. “Amy thinks I’m a Beta, and my family thinks my girlfriend is an Alpha. It would be great not to have these lies hanging over my head.”
“I’m glad you feel this way, Justin. But it’s time to make it right.”
“I just need a little time, okay?” Justin said.
“Okay,” I agreed. “But don’t take too long. The longer you wait, the more it’s going to hurt her. And if you’re playing a game with me and I find out you are using Amy, I will make you sorry.”
Justin shook his head. “I swear, I’m not using her. I love Amy. I want to be with her for the rest of my life. And then I’m going to tell my family. They can disown me if they want to.”
“Just make it soon,” I reminded him. “And don’t forget what I said. If you’re playing her, I will use all my connections in the Alpha society to hurt you.”
“I’m not playing her,” Justin insisted.
“Then let me know if you need any help.” I wrote my cell number on a tablet lying on the coffee table.
Victor and I left the apartment and went back downstairs into the Lamborghini.
On our way to my office, Victor turned to me with a grin. “Wow, you are turning into one fierce Luna. I’m impressed.”
“I just hope it doesn’t cause a problem between me and Amy. What if he starts trouble between us? What if she’s mad at me for knowing he’s an Alpha and not telling her?”
“It could happen,” Victor agreed.
I suddenly got butterflies in my stomach. Was I going to lose my best friend because I tried to help her? Amy was in love, and people in love weren’t always rational.
Thinking I should call her, I pulled my phone out of my purse.
But Victor read my mind. “I wouldn’t call and tell Amy that you talked to Justin or why. Wait until she brings it up to you.”
“Victor is right,” Diana said. “You have done all you can for Amy right now.”
I shook my head in frustration. There was no way out of being involved once I knew the truth about Justin. Now I had to wait and see if I would lose my best friend.
