Chapter 126
I woke up early, feeling rested and ready for the day. The cabin was silent as I crept to the bathroom.
After getting dressed, I went downstairs. Victor was sound asleep in the chair with his feet on the coffee table.
I went to the kitchen and got a glass of juice and a banana before slipping out the back door.
At the edge of the dock, I sat down to drink my juice, eat my banana, and watch the morning sun glimmer off the tiny ripples that spread across the lake.
I just finished my banana when a strange pair of sneakers appeared at my side. I looked up and saw a girl who appeared to be about my age.
She had a pretty face surrounded by gorgeous auburn hair. She was petite with a curvy figure and was dressed in shorts and a sweatshirt that advertised a baseball team.
“Mind if I sit with you?” The girl asked. She had a brilliant smile that made me smile too.
“Sure,” I replied and moved my glass of juice closer to me.
“I’m Lexi,” she said and put out her hand for me to shake.
I shook her hand and introduced myself.
“I know who you are,” she said. “You were all my dad could talk about last night.”
“Who’s your dad?”
“Roy Kramer,” she said with a grimace. “He was the leader of the welcoming party at your front door last night.”
I took a sip of my juice. “Oh.”
“He was saying how great it was to have you at the lake,” Lexi replied. “My brothers were impressed too. That’s why I had to come down here and check you out this morning.”
“I’m glad you did,” I told her.
“Are you coming to the barbecue?” She flung my banana peel into the water.
“I don’t know yet,” I replied. “I want to, but my fiancé isn’t sure if it’s safe.”
“I hope you come,” Lexi said. “Nobody will hurt you. They’re afraid of your father. And it would be nice to have somebody around who isn’t into all that Alphas are so superior crap.”
I laughed out loud. Lexi was like a breath of fresh air in a crowded room. She kind of reminded me of Amy.
“My best friend is a Beta, and I was raised as one,” I said. They’re pretty much just like us.”
She looked at me in disbelief, and I explained my childhood situation.
“That’s so dope,” she said. “Hey, two hot guys are coming this way.”
“It must be my fiancé and one of my best friends,” I said as I turned around.
“Why do they look mad?” Lexi asked.
“Probably because I left the cabin without telling them,” I replied.
Lexi got to her feet. “I’ll let you deal with the drama. But I hope you come to the barbecue. See ya later.”
I giggled when Lexi made a face at William and Victor as she walked past them. Then she gave me a little wave and disappeared into the trees.
“Making friends already this morning?” Victor asked as they walked onto the dock.
“She’s Roy’s daughter.”
“What did she want?” William asked.
“Her father and brothers were talking about me last night, so she wanted to meet me,” I replied. “I wouldn’t mind going to the barbecue. Lexi said we would be safe.”
“Maybe they sent her here to say that,” William said.
“If they wanted to hurt me, they could’ve done it last night,” I insisted.
“I agree with Daisy,” Victor said. “They seemed genuinely impressed by her and knew there would be severe punishment for harming her.”
“Then let’s have breakfast,” William said. “Then I’ll take Daisy out on the boat.”
“Great, what’s for breakfast?” I asked.
William shrugged. “Whatever you want to make.”
I giggled. “That’s the real reason why you came to look for me. You two don’t know how to cook.”
But Jennifer had bacon, eggs, and toast ready when we returned to the cabin. We ate, and I helped clean up before William and I went out on the lake in the boat.
It was great. I enjoyed checking out the lake from the water. It was after noon before we came back to the cabin for lunch.
Afterward, I studied weekly reports with Victor for an hour before going swimming off the dock with Jennifer. The guys didn’t want to swim, but they watched us from the cabin’s front porch.
Everything was easy and relaxing. I wanted to stay forever.
After a quick nap in a hammock, I showered and got ready to go to the barbecue.
I put on jeans and a T-shirt and tied a sweatshirt around my waist in case it got cooler. Jennifer arranged my hair in a messy bun and applied light makeup to my face. I was ready to go.
Taking a cake and a pie Jennifer made that morning while I was on the lake with William, we hiked to the north end of the lake.
Roy’s cabin wasn’t hard to find. We followed the smell of roasting pork and venison. The crowd in the backyard went silent when they first spotted us.
But after Roy rushed over to welcome us, we relaxed. The Lake Pocono Alphas were curious about us, but they treated us well.
Jennifer and I sat at a picnic table with Lexi as Lucas and Liam hovered nearby.
“Daisy, you’ve got to try the venison,” Liam said. “I tracked the deer for over a mile before I caught it.”
“You’ll like the roast pork better,” Lucas insisted. “I raised it myself.”
“My brothers have a crush on you,” Lexi confided.
The Kramer brothers looked a great deal alike, but according to Lexi, they were not twins.
Even though Liam was a year older than Lucas, they had the same auburn hair as their sister and possessed nearly identical handsome faces and masculine bodies that made it difficult to tell them apart.
As William and Victor stood with Roy and some of the other Alpha males, they watched the brothers with sour faces as they continued to shower me with attention.
They scowled fiercely when Liam brought me a glass of iced tea, and then Lucas brought a bowl of chips. Then the brothers sat across from me and told me about Lake Pocono.
The brothers were quite charming in a rustic kind of way.
“Lake Pocono is the most southern glacier-made lake on this continent,” Lucas said.
“Some spots are over fifty feet deep,” Liam added.
When the meat was ready, the brothers brought me some of each. I was beginning to feel a little overwhelmed by all their attention.
As the sun started to set, some of the older men produced instruments and began to play. Instantly, Liam extended his hand and asked me to dance.
I accepted, and he led me to a grassy area lighted by a string of colored lanterns.
He took me into his arms, and we did a variation of the two-step.
He wasn’t as good of a dancer as William and Victor, but I was having fun.
“You should stay here all the time,” Liam said halfway through the dance. “It’s nice to have a pretty girl around.”
I blushed. “I love it here, but I must finish school, and I have a business to run in the city.”
Before the song ended, Lucas tried to cut in, causing an argument between the brothers.
That’s when Victor intervened. “Excuse me, gentlemen. I want to dance with my fiancée now.” Victor took me into his arms, and we began to dance.
“Enjoying yourself?” he asked as we watched Lucas and Liam argue over who would dance with me next.
“Yeah, the people here are nice,” I replied as I saw William watching us.
“Are you ready to go back to the cabin yet?”
I looked around at the lively crowd. “I think we should wait a little longer before we leave. It would be rude if we left now.”
“But now that it’s getting dark, they’re starting to drink alcohol,” Victor explained. “It will be easy for things to get out of hand. I’d rather have you somewhere safe.”
“Okay,” I agreed. “Let me say goodbye to Lexi and Roy.” Lucas and Liam were still arguing, and I didn’t want to get involved.
Lexi and Roy were sad to see us go. But they claimed to understand when I told them I was tired from all my activities on the lake that day.
But as we made our way around the lake back to our cabin, we sensed several wolves close behind us.
“Should we shift?” William asked Victor. “We could run faster as wolves.”
Victor turned and listened before answering. “There are several of them behind us. Let’s shift and make a run for it. But keep the women between us.”
To be continued......
