Chapter 103

I had to find out what was happening with my best friend’s boyfriend.

Was Justin, her mystery boyfriend, Trey Brown’s cousin and an Alpha. If so, why would he lie to her about being a Beta unless he was using her?

I had butterflies in my stomach as the chauffeur let me off outside the school. Somehow, I had to protect my friend, but Amy’s love for Justin wouldn’t make it easy.

Amy was waiting for me in our spot. I approached her with my practiced smile. She was too busy looking at her phone screen to notice my cheerful expression wasn’t genuine.

“Talking to Justin already this morning?” I asked as casually as I could.

“Uh-huh,” she replied as she typed a response into her phone. “How was your dork party?” Amy asked me.

“It was okay,” I answered. “I ate the most delicious sandwich.”

“That’s good.” She typed another response.

“What did you do last night?” I had to find out for sure if it was Justin I met last night without Amy suspecting what I was doing.

“I worked with Dad for a couple of hours, and then I read for a while,” she replied.

“Where was Justin? I thought you’d hang out with him if you didn’t have to work all night.”

“He was studying for an exam,” she told me. “He asked me not to text or call him until this morning because he needs to ace this exam.”

“Tell him I said good luck on his test.”

Amy gave me a warm smile. “I will.”

The bell rang, and we had to go inside the school. Most of the Alpha kids waved and talked to me on my way to class. They were slowly accepting me as one of their own.

In werewolf history, I spoke to William before class started.

“Are you sure there weren’t any Betas at the party last night?” I asked him.

“Positive.” He looked at me sideways. “Why?”

“You know that guy I asked you about that I said looked familiar?”

“Yeah.”

“Could he be a Beta?”

William chuckled. “No way. Justin comes from an old Alpha family, and they are more loaded than Trey’s mom and dad. They own a chain of hotels.”

“A chain of hotels,” I whispered to myself. What was I going to do if he was Amy’s boyfriend? She would be crushed. I bit my lip as Miss Grant entered the room and started class.

I suspected it was him, and I was pretty sure he knew who I was by how he acted. He must not have thought I would be at that party.

I met Amy at lunch. And we sat at our usual table. She texted with Justin as I chatted with some Alpha girls who sat nearby.

Finally, she took a break from texting to eat.

“I can’t believe my best friend is in love, and I still haven’t met her man yet,” I said teasingly.“I don’t even know what the guy looks like.”

Amy giggled and brought up a photo on her phone. “Here, feast your eyes on my hunky sweetheart, you nosy Alpha.”

The photo was a selfie of Amy and an attractive, sandy-haired guy. They had their arms around each other as they sat at a booth in a diner.

There was no mistaking him. It was the guy from the party. Justin was lying to Amy. He is a rich Alpha.

As I stared at the image on her phone, my mind whirled. Should I tell her now? Would she believe me if I did? Would my telling her the truth ruin our friendship?

I needed to think before I did anything.

“Yep, he’s a hottie, all right,” I said.

Hanging out with the Alphas was turning me into quite the actress. I’m not sure if that’s a good thing or not, but I decided not to say anything to Amy just yet.

After lunch, the rest of the day was just a blur. I couldn’t concentrate on my classes as I wondered what Amy would do when she learned the truth about Justin.

I love her like a sister, and I didn’t want to be the cause of her pain. Yet, the more involved she got with him, the worse it would hurt when she found out he was lying to her.

At the end of the day, I skipped going to the roof and went to the gate to find Victor. He was waiting for me in the Lamborghini to take me to Wilson, Inc.

I didn’t wait for him to open my car door. I just climbed into the Lamborghini and did my best not to slam the door.

“Why do you look so angry?” Victor asked.

I explained to him what I had discovered about Amy’s boyfriend.

“Are you telling me Amy’s mystery boyfriend is Justin Brown?” he asked.

“Yeah,” I replied. “He’s been telling Amy for weeks that he’s a Beta who feels like she does about Alphas.”

“What an idiot,” Victor sighed. “What do you want to do about it?”

“I don’t know what I should do,” I replied. “But I know Amy needs to know.”

“We should talk to Justin first,” Victor said. “Before you destroy Amy with the truth, find out what Justin’s truth is.”

I gave Victor side eye.“His truth is that he’s a liar.”

“Yes,” Victor agreed. “But I think it would be better for Amy if she heard the truth from Justin. She will try to understand why he lied to her, and he’s the only one who can tell her that.”

“Great, then let’s go find him,” I said. “Drive to the city college, and I’ll ask them where he’s staying.”

“The college has rules about giving out their students' addresses,” Victor explained. “Give me a little time to learn more about him and where he lives.”

“Don’t take too long finding out. Amy is falling for him more every day. What he’s doing to her isn’t right.”

“I agree,” Victor said. “After I discover where we can find him, I’ll go with you, and we’ll talk to him together, okay?”

I nodded. “I don’t know what excuse he could have for lying to Amy like this about who he is.”

“But flying off the handle and telling Amy now would be wrong. You don’t have all the answers she will need, but Justin does.”

We went to Wilson, Inc, and Victor gave me a lesson on balance sheets and liquid assets, but it was still hard to concentrate.

“I know what would help you,” Victor said slyly.

“Oh, yeah. Besides someone to kick Justin’s butt, what would help me?”

“Ice cream,” Victor replied.

I closed the folders on the desk in front of me and stood. “Let’s go.”

Victor drove me to the ice cream parlor on the city's outskirts. We got two thick chocolate shakes with whip cream and sat in his car to enjoy them.

Before long, my mood improved, and I could even smile at Victor’s dumb jokes. I thanked the Goddess for his friendship. I was lucky to have him to help with my problems.

Victor was right about how the situation needed to be handled with Justin. I was glad to accept his help and advice.

After finishing the milkshakes, I offered to take the empty cups and straws to the trashcan and throw them away.

When I returned to the car, Victor was looking at his phone screen. The expression on his face was grim.

“What’s wrong ?” I got back in the car and closed the door.

He silently shook his head. His eyes were so sad that I thought something happened to his parents.

I took his hand. “Victor, tell me what’s wrong.”

“We have to get you home,” he said. “I just got a text from Benson. He found your father lying unresponsive on the living room floor.”

I buckled my seatbelt. “Hurry!”
